  • oooft that DDR5 price

  • Would be better to go 2x16gb for dual channel wouldn’t it?

    • +1

Looks like DDR5 has "dual channels" built into each stick, so unless you're looking at benchmarks the difference may be minimal

      • yes but the catch with that is 8GB sticks are to be avoided at all costs.

        That's 2x 32-bit for a total of 64-bit data width per DIMM/'channel', same as DDR4, just split.

Ideally you still want a pair of DIMMs/modules, for a total of 2x (2x 32-bit) = 128-bit data width. Again, same as DDR4.

Basically, ignore the per-module channel split with DDR5, and treat it the same way as DDR4.

        • I think in LinusTechTips recent video they had minimal difference (in gaming) in dual vs single channel for ddr5 but did have a significant difference in ddr4

          • @Seismic: Yea, gaming isn't super memory bandwidth heavy. So you might not notice with most games. The higher clocks and more efficient data bursts of DDR5 will also mask it.

Still, you're halving your max memory bandwidth by leaving a channel unpopulated. Unless you intend to fill in the other channel later, you might as well go with a pair from the start if the prices aren't far off. Someone else posted a cheaper 2x 16GB deal in the comments.

            e: there's also https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/memory/ddr5/93507-kf552c… and https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/memory/ddr5/93239-ct2k16…

Lots of options if you just want 32 GB total. IMO the only time it's worth going single stick is for a future upgrade, e.g. 1x 32 GB now with a plan to add another 1x 32 GB for 64 GB total.

    • Just don't do 4 sticks on current platforms (Ie. Z690). I think a few people have been caught out by bios bugs trying to get that stable and working with their included XMP profiles.

      • Wow so same issues as the early DDR4 and early DDR3 motherboards and 4x ram kits. Somehow every time a new generation is released, early adapters are always beta testing rather than getting stable products out of the box.

        • If you’re on the bleeding edge, prepare to get cut
