Cool…. but does it route all my data overseas before reaching servers in Australia?

sorry mate, don't know if they use this same tech. in their phones as well.

My one pings 3 Chinese servers every 10 seconds, blocked by pi hole of course.

      • +1

how can i find out and block ??

        • +1

have a look at pi hole. All you need is a raspberry pi and some basic networking skills to set your DNS server to your pi hole.

Undercut the competition, let capitalism do the rest. Boom, worldwide government sponsored botnet. Frighteningly ingenious.

Probably don't use the stock firmware in any sensitive or security conscious networks.

Although, I think the only workable alternative on this model are dodgy QSDK builds from unknown sources. So uhhhhhh. Good luck with that.

DNS blocks on *.miwifi.com should cover most of the phone-home stuff. However, there are instances in the firmware where they use direct ips and not dns names. Eg. 183.84.5.44 58.83.177.108 (You'll find these two in /usr/share/messaging/messaging.conf)

And for the handful of people that can actually extract their firmware and disassemble ARM binaries, don't look at /usr/bin/messagingagent, and most certainly don't look at their receive handler for when the message is command. Definitely no calls to system() with the message input there. So don't look.

  • was considering this model to upgrade wireless in my house but was worried about it stealing data. have a job with high security requirements

went with d-link covr ax1800 instead. very solid

    • Even if data packets where harvested they would just be garble garble garble of millions of lines of code and totally useless. Data harvesting by router data packets is tinfoil hat nonsense.

Key logging is what you should be worried about.

  • Is this global firmware english?

    • Should be, if they're selling the global version.

Which is likely, as they don't sell these as mesh pairs in China, only as single units.

No idea if they've got AU power limits programmed properly though.
