Saris H3 Smart Trainer $764.99 Delivered @ Pushy's

BIG15

Hi all, if you're looking for a trainer for Zwift, TrainerRoad or the like, stacking this coupon on the current sale price is very cheap for a premium trainer. Yes, it's not one of the "Big Two", but at this price it's half the price of a discounted Kickr and yet is considered to be in the same class by most review sites. Personally, I've ordered it to replace my son's Elite Suito, which has a much lighter flywheel than my Kickr and impacts the ride feel significantly.

I expect it has had some firmware upgrades in the past few years to improve its accuracy

    • Hope so! DCRainmaker said much the same at the time - great for ERG, decent at sim. But it’s got to be better than the Suito. Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by the wahoo, but I really dislike the ride feel on that one and the software is terrible (two separate apps for updates and calibration).

I've been pretty happy with my Suito (granted - I haven't tried a Wahoo so don't know how it compares). However - big but, the calibration was way off in the beginning (underreading by about 20%) and I had to get in contact with Elite to get them to give me a special config file to correct the power. Support were pretty helpful at getting back to me quickly. If I didn't have a separate power meter to verify against, I wouldn't have had a chance of fixing this. No issues since then though. ERG mode suffers a bit at lower cadences but if you keep it at ~90ish it feels fine.

Granted, I certainly agree that the phone software is crap, but aside from the occasional software update I haven't had much reason to use the apps.

Interesting - mine under-reads the Kickr by about 15% so i should look into that firmware, but my son doesn't care - he's not competitive and happy to plod. If you ride them back to back, the difference in flywheel inertia is apparent too, but I've been spoiled. When you're doing something like the rollers in Titan's Grove in Zwift, the Suito applies resistance as soon as the gradient increases, whereas the Kickr eases it in, in the same way that you'd lose momentum gradually IRL. First world problem, I know. ;-)
The apps were top of mind as the Suito was misbehaving the other day and so I was trying to calibrate it - not easy in Zwift (which I use for the wahoo) and awful in their own app. Needed to download the other app to update the fiirmware too.

is it worth spending a little more and getting the Elite Direto XR-T Indoor Trainer for $866?

    • Yeah, good call. I’m personally not an Elite fan, but that is very keen for that model..

    • No, I wouldn't buy the Direto over the H3 even if the prices were swapped.

    • I was actually considering the suito t instead. Mainly they all supposedly work but the suito looks most compact and storable. Having said that though I think most folk either leave it out set up all the time or just never use them!

Seems like the Saris H3 is comparable to the Wahoo Kickr V5. However, their support is nonexistent, especially in Aus, so if something goes wrong, you're going to have a hard time. Pushys is the only distributor for Saris in Aus. Not sure if the support for Wahoo is any better, but there's way more distributors around so at least returns will be easier.

    • Also decent resale for wahoo units

    • True - I think I posted something along those lines last time I was musing on a H3. Good reminder.
