    How much is it normally?

    • +5

      $2699 at JB ATM

      • +2

        Wow, that's a big saving…

        • +1

yeah, not just the normal 10% ….. would be interesting how much stock office works has and they just don’t want to be stuck with intel as more M chips roll out.

          • +2

@garage sale: Doesn't look like a lot of stock nationally. Although that probably depends on what you consider a lot of stock! :)
            https://officeworks.youinstock.com.au/search/IMAC27205G

          • @garage sale: It's officially discontinued now. I'm concerned that Apple will probably very quickly drop support for these, similar to the powerpc situation when they switched to Intel.

            • @TheRealCJ: I wouldn’t be too worried. Apple tend to support quite some time compared with most, and even if in five years’ time they do stop updating, it isn’t as though it will stop working.

              • @entropysbane: Support, yes. OS updates? No. Therein lies the problem. Apple tends to lock everything behind update walls, so there's no chance of getting any fixes for problems with the OS unless you get an Apple silicone mac.

                • @TheRealCJ: A reasonable expectation would be at least five years, just like iOS updates.

And they still sell two Intel models today. The Mac mini and Mac Pro.

                  • @entropysbane: Possbily five, but it only took three for them to drop PowerPC support in the annual OSX upgrade.

Hmmmm… hexa core 1650-equiv intel iMac for $1700 in 2022….

    • +2

Yeah imagine only having a 5k in 2022? Whats your computers resolution?

      • 1440p on an igpu, hence mocking the gpu in this 5k imac

  • Will anyone else price match it?

  • +6

If you prefer Intel chip at this point there are more options from Lenovo and HP. But this price is really good for a 5k screen AIO.

    • Agreed this is a decent price for a 5k screen with a computer attached.
Doesn’t have a TPM, which complicates Windows 11 installs, and macOS won’t support Intel for ever, but it still has utility for a few years yet and beyond if you want to install Linux on it.

      • +4

It’d be a good price for a 5k monitor, but unfortunately won’t be able to use target display mode, so it’s just essentially a 1650-equiv powering a 5k display….

        • Yeah, cheaper than buying the new Studio display
Just wish some one made a conversion kit for these where you could strip out the guts of a M1 mini and throw it in, kinda like what Luke Miami did but a bit more polished

      • +3

FWIW, my 2012 iMac with a quad-core i5 runs Windows 11 perfectly. Might be tempted to run it as the default OS as it is much more modern compared to the maximum MacOS it supports.

What’s stopping me is for general web browsing and email, MacOS links better with my iPhone so it’s not too bad.

Got it running by changing a few regedit strings during setup. I installed it right over the Windows 10 Boot Camp partition. Just needed to re-install the Boot Camp drivers and manually updated the GPU drivers from Nvidia’s website.

    • not so much options from hp or lenovo if you want intel …..it’s if you are into mac os / os x and the apple ecosystem …..unless you are really geeky running os x on other than apple platform is a pain ….

      • -2

If you want a system to run OSX then don't buy this - Macs have moved away from Intel chips. This is a legacy system in OSX land.

You buy this today to run Windows or Linux - which is why the Lenovo and HP alternatives were mentioned.

        • +1

Or you could buy it to run the upcoming Mac OS Ventura:

          macOS Ventura Compatible Devices
Apple has revealed that the following devices will be compatible with the latest version of the macOS when it gets released.

          iMac (2017 and later)
          iMac Pro (2017 and later)
          MacBook (2017 and later)
          MacBook Air (2018 and later)
          MacBook Pro (2017 and later)
          Mac Mini (2018 and later)
          Mac Pro (2019 and later)
          Mac Studio (2022)

  • any idea which year is this unit? is it 2015?

  • +1

I thought 2020 but could be wrong

  • I believe this has same panel as new 5K studio display from LG

    • +2

Except you can’t use it as a seperate display, just for the system inside it

      • +1

This is the big limitation. The screen is amazing but it’s not usable with anything other than this outdated Intel processor.

      • There are limited options to separate displays of any iMac pre-2020 and post-2012 currently, but I'm looking at using this as a method until we get more work arounds or cheaper apple displays.

  • Wouldn't the M1 cream all over this? Still, upvoted.

    • +2

yeah but M chip in imac would cost a lot more and some people might be quite happy with the I5 if they are into apple ecosystem , i have windows PCs with 28”. 4k ……but am keeping my coin for the new macbook air with the M2 in july …..

used to have an imac on the dining table, great physical format and handy but the macbook air will be handier.

    • +1

They still don't have a 27 inch 5k M1 iMac though. Just the baby one.

      • Apple probably won’t release a 27” M1 iMac; they consider a Studio Display paired with a Mac Studio or a Mac mini as its replacement.

        • And take the extra profit. I don’t think Apple was making much of a margin on a 27 inch Intel iMac with those 5K screens.

  • +2

Gets out 10ft pole. Won’t touch it.

  • +12

Just a reminder to interested buyers that Apple is rapidly phasing Intel Macs out of their support with new OSes. Only buy this if you're aware of this and really want the screen, or really need to run Windows on your Mac, and don't care that it's being left behind by Apple Silicon. The 24-inch M1 iMac may be a better pick for a lot of people, and has a new design, with more guaranteed future support.

    • problem with really wanting the screen is, so you really want 5k running on a 1650, not gonna be a fun experience

      • +2

For some graphic artists/designers it might be alright. It's a very pretty screen. Absolutely do not buy it for gaming or rendering or anything. It doesn't support Target Display Mode so you WILL have to use the computer itself. And if the screen or computer ever breaks, the whole unit is integrated.

        • -4

I think someone in graphic design would want something a bit more balanced than 1650-equiv/5k

    • +2

Does this run the latest OS? Yes so it is still useful for 5 years at least

      • Didn't say it's not useful necessarily, just said to be aware before purchase.

        • +2

Yeah i have a m1 pro so kind of a hypocrit lol but these computers are really great still

  • +5

I wouldn't buy this just for the 5K resolution. I'll just stay away from anything Intel in a Mac - Mx chips all the way if I want to future proof myself. But then, this is cheaper the most recent iPhone. So judge your use case and see if this a value buy. For me, as I said before I'm staying away from anything Intel within a Mac as Mx chips are way way better for my use case.

    • +2

For general public, yes, Apple silicon is a better choice. For software development work on existing projects, depending on the type of work, there is still some growing pain on Apple silicon.

The main issue is price. If this can be dirt cheap (very unlikely), it will be a wonderful family PC. The display is nice. I don't have a 5K display myself.

      • +3

Most of the development ide’s now support Apple Silicon. The one which still has limited support are Game Development like Unreal Engine and some 3d rendering softwares. General Mobile/ Web developer might greatly benefit with m1 macs.

        • If your projects are on the latest dev toolkits, yes. Web development does greatly benefit using Apple Silicon.

I am not sure about jumping into "m1" now because m2 is coming out soon. Might as well wait for m2. With PCIe gen 5 coming in a more proper way, AMD using TSMC 5nm for its next gen CPUs, and the annoying, but inevitable USB-C/alt-mode DP 2.0, we'll see how things pan out in the next 2-3 years. Will Intel rollout Thunderbolt 5 next year coz. Thunderbolt 4 is somewhat disappointing so far.

          • @netsurfer: M2 isn't anything special. M1 is good enough for most people or you can go M1 Pro or Max - both of which are more powerful than recently launched vanilla M2 processor.

            • @sacs2k1: You have a M1 series device right? M2 tells us Apple's intention on addressing some of the M1 quirks (USB, Bluetooth). Also, is the extra hardware encoding pure hype and useless (i.e. 8K)?

We need to stop thinking M1 is good enough. AMD is yet to go 5nm and Intel is technically on 7nm equivalent. I sure want to know why M1's USB is subpar given that the Thunderbolt chipset is from Intel. Did Intel screw up or there is something else?

I have a M1 device and I'm sorry to inform you that it is not fast enough. M1 Pro/Max is fast. M1, honestly, is just okay in 2022.

              • @netsurfer: I think for the most part, all the M1 issues are typical "Gen 1" teething troubles. But I think also that Apple had a lot of hubris in their design of it, trying to make it a chip that can run the most powerful desktop and the most basic tablet. They effectively made the processor equivalent of a Leatherman: useful, powerful, works well in a lot of situations… But not as good as a real saw, or real screwdriver, or real pliers etc.

The M2, plus the M1 Max and Pro chips are them admitting that they weren't able to make a truly one-size-fits-all chipset, in the usual Apple way of never actually admitting a mistake.

  • +3

I think at this point, an M1 Mac Mini with a decent monitor is much better deal IMO.

    • When you look at https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lg-27md5kl-27-ultrafine-5…, then this one doesn't look at all bad.

M1 Mac Mini, I guess you can at least output 2 displays. A thunderbolt enclosure isn't super expensive now (coz. M1's USB 3.2 gen 1 and gen 2 performance is subpar).

      • But do you really need a monitor like that? I'm running my M1 Mac mini on an old Dell 23" 1080p monitor that I had lying around (these sell for about $200), and it looks great. Perfect size for normal viewing distance on a typical desk.

        • The iMac 27 inch screen is really nice. The glossy finish, 5K display. Thunderbolt ports, USB ports, LAN port, SD card reader.

I get Mac M1 is entry level Mac and priced very competitively and for real 4K work, M1 Pro / Max is more suited.

I've upgraded my monitors to 27 inch. Too many Dell monitor deals posted on OZB, couldn't resist. Gave away 25 inch or below monitors to relatives and friends.

      • -1

That monitor is utterly stupid imo. I personally like to pair them with EKO 50" 4K TVs for $399

  • +2

Seems like its got soldered-on (non-replaceable) ssd?

    • +2

Welcome to Apple. Name an Apple product that you can buy now with a replicable SSD.

      • +3

It's worth noting because every 27" iMac (like the 2019 model) before it has a replacable SSD. Only the 2020 model is like this

    • macs have moved away from DIY upgrades on many of there platforms … reliability and size and most mac users probably just buy and use … from a macbook air owner and imac owner and windows 11 I5 11600 owner ….

    • +3

lucky still got ram upgrade, probably the last Mac can do that.

  • +2

Pay (much) more for less versatility, the apple way tm

    • -2

the bulk of apple users don’t do diy …they just use and soldered allows things to be made smaller and more reliable ….. different demographic to windows users ……. i know people, who buy apple care …. don’t know anybody that buys support for their windows PCs ….. demographics …like some people cook at home to save money …some people just eat take away though it costs more …..

      • +3

We need to stop making excuses for Apple. It's cost cutting.

don’t know anybody that buys support for their windows PCs

Um… try Harvey Norman. Dell, for example, offers on site support for some of their products. My most recent encounter with Apple support, 2 separate Genius Bar appointments. Neither was great. First one just wiped the entire device. After a hour, the problem was clearly not fixed, went back to the store, have to book another appointment.

        • -1

It’s not cost cutting at Apple - it’s profit maximisation ;)

      • +4

You know you'd sound more coherant and less like a seething fanboy if you used less ellipsis.

  • +2
    1. I bought mid-spec a few weeks ago.
    2. 512G SSD you can not swap for bigger, so be carefully if you thinking of swap this 256G
3, Ram can be easily upgraded to 64G
4, I have M1 iMac but 8g 256G is not suitable for my habit of open 50+ tabs.
5, thing is not as quiet as my iMac 2015.
  • +2

I just came for the repeated 1650-equiv comments, they never get old at all.

    • +1

  • The M1 24” iMac are about the same price?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/685803

So the only benefit of this is the larger screen? But it isn’t future proof.

Is the screen on the 24” M1 similar quality to this one?

  • Will the apple store price match?

I think the 27 inch m2 imac is imminent.

    • +1

they have already discontinued this 2020 iMac .

  • +1

I have the i7 variant of this. (Could be 2019) Bought it on launch. It's a great computer for productivity but don't expect decent gaming. Mine has the rx580x
And it's not great I am even running gloomhaven on medium to high which is a low demand game.
Halo infinite is virtually unplayable except on low

    • That's probably what bothers me most about the upper spec iMacs and Macbooks - the graphics card is mediocre. There are plenty of laptops available with extremely capable graphics card for gaming at a lower price (eg the Ozbargainers favourite Acer Nitro 5 with the 11th gen i5 and RTX 3060 - around $1200). The good news about this is (if someone deems they absolutely must have it), is the Thunderbolt USB-C ports. You can buy a Razer Core X/Chroma (or another brand) external GPU and use it to power games etc.

      • +1

        Yep that's the bonus

      • +1

Never met anyone who bought an iMac for gaming.

And it is simply nonsense to make a comparison between this Apple desktop with the MacOS with an Acer or Razer laptop.

You're totally missing the point about who buys Mac desktops (as opposed to MacBooks) and why this 27" 4K iMac at this price point, even with its superseded Intel chip, is a bargain for most home users who won't even come close to using it to its full capabilities.

        • Not disputing there are much better options for gaming out there mate - many people buy a desktop for multiple purposes, not just basic use.

    • +1

Buy an iMac for your beautiful display.

      • +3

Its so underrated, but i dont think there is a display in the market that is as beautiful as the iMac. I cant vouch for the OLED display f048u but that would be the closest competitor or maybe even better, but would have to do side by side comparison

        • Agreed. Even my 2015 5K is still beautiful.

    • If you're really keen, you can buy an eGPU (Razer Core X) with a higher spec AMD card (6900 XT?) and run it via USB-C. Now that would be pretty badass on a 5k screen.
      https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208544

  • Its hard to justify one of these when the M chips are out, the performance difference is just way too substantial to bite the bullet and go for the older model.

    • Depends on what is important to you. The fact it comes with a $1000 plus monitor means you are not paying much for the computer part. Also the magic keyboard and mouse can be sold off on eBay for $200 so it makes the computer part even cheaper again. Sure no good for the latest apple macOS but very good for windows 10 if you want a decent all on one for home.

      • -1

Agreed, although you can't use it as a standalone screen and with an igpu on the equivalent of a 1650 powering a 5k screen means windows will likely chug a bit even doing day to day tasks. If you want a media consumption device with a fantastic screen or something to do basic word processing its a great proposition but I cant see it being useful past that.

  • +1

Had one of these since 2018. Superb screen. Just pop some more RAM in it.

  • -1

As it has a thunderbolt 3 port you can get some mighty fast external thunderbolt 3 external drives these days.
I wonder how much longer apple will support the intel cpu for macOS upgrades.
