          I have 2 nitro's and nothing but pain with them both overheating and dealing with Acer who don't wanna know me and have admitted there are faults with the entire series and overheating is a very known issue.

            @typhoonadventure: My Nitro 5 has a battery that self discharges itself about 50% everyweek, Acer claim this isnt a fault.

              @sonicentropy: careful you put up a forum post here trying to hear from others who have issues with the nitro 5 and you get a ton of people with nothing to do with it telling you to buy a mac, waste 6 weeks sending it away when you can't and that it's all your fault.

      I have got the 3060 Nitro 5 from HN. My experience is OK. I have upgraded it with 32GB ram with 1 Gen4 SSD + 1 SATA SSD. (3 SSD in total) Attach a 4K HDR monitor via HDMI and I can run all the games I have above 60 FPS. (My monitor can only do 60HZ) The laptop is silent and not hot when not running games. The cooling system is OK for i5 + 3060 in my opinion. (The CPU may reach 100C when doing heavy games (but not often) and GPU will always below 85C)

      However, they are having the i9 11900H + 3060 for sale now ($1699 + $300GC) and I think I will go with that one if I had not bought the i5 version.

      Like many, got the Nitro 5 (i5-10300H/8GB/512GB SSD/RTX3060 6GB) in October last year, slapped another 8gb (CT8G4SFRA32A) stick of ram in and a 1tb ssd.
      Has been used heavily, running flawlessly and couldn't be happier with my purchase at a time when prices were high and value was hard to come by.
      YMMV

      This - I have the Nitro 5, stopped using it in favour of an HP. The nitro feels 'cheap' in a way that the Victus doesn't.

    Anyone know if you can run an external monitor from this via a usb-c hub with hdmi out? I'm hoping to hook up two external monitors (one via the hdmi port and one via the usb-c port) but it's a bit confusing knowing whether you need thunderbolt or not?

      I think if you have a usb-c monitor, yes. but if you plan to use a usbc to display port converter cable then thunderbolt comes to action and what version of display port it supports.. really not sure, best to get into reddit.

      Currently running 1 monitor off HDMI.
      2nd monitor off Dell USB C hub with display port and USB peripherals no issues.
      Both 1080P 144hz.

      My laptop connects to 2 external displays - one via HDMI and the other via a USB C-to-HDMI adapter. It's an AMD system so no Thunderbolt. One display is 60Hz and the other is 144Hz.

      The MSI looks like a decent deal, can't seem to find any reviews on that specific model, or any info on the display, would be good to jnow how many nits.

      With shopback cashback and Dell challenge atm I could get a 3050Ti Dell G15 (below) for ~ $1050, but not sure which is better now between that or the MSI. Taking into account the build quality and weight of the MSI v G15, not just purely specs.

      Intel H series aren't the best for battery life. 7hrs would be absolutely best case scenario. From personal experience 4hrs would be more realistic based on mixed usage, even with a large battery.

        Intel H series processor seems to be fine in my MacBook Pro with an H series i7. Gets 14 hours daily. Must be a windows graphics switching issue.

          You do realise that one of the MacBook Pro's had massive 100wH battery to compensate for the lack of power efficiency of the Intel H series.

          The MacBook Pro Intel versions from 2018/19 also had significant throttling issues to due the chassis not being able to
          Cool the CPUs which effected performance.

          I'd agree that fast charge is supported only via the standard plug/pin AC adaptor though (not via USB-C) as it's rated at 200W.

            @mattis: HP Sleep and Charge - i guess it means that it can charge other devices via usb-c
            upd ****If it has the sleep and charge type port it can charge a cell phone while the laptop is in sleep mode. Otherwise power going out of the usb port is cut off when the laptop sleeps. No all usb ports put out power and can charge a cell phone, for example.****

              @rwt: You're right, its just for output charging (phones and other accessories) and not to charge the laptop itself. Nicely spotted.

              Sleep and charge I think from memory just means it can charge devices from the USB-C (or USB-A port next to it) when the laptop is in sleep mode.

              Kind of makes sense I guess with the fact that that the AC charger is 200W, with the GPU it needs more than the 100W that the USB-C port would support.

          HP offers display options that range from 1080p (250 nits) at the low end up to 1080p at 144Hz (300 nits) inside our review unit, without HDR capabilities.

            @rwt: I used to own the Ryzen one, it looks 250nits to me and says so on the box as well. I think it can reach a max of 280. Great for productivity not so much for gaming that has a lot of dark areas. One way to bypass it is to simply hook it up.

    I've always preferred 14" but am considering this because of the specs at this price point… I'm gonna go instore to try 16" form factor and probably will buy it if I don't hate it.

    Decent battery life, high refresh rate display, 16gb ram, decent gpu - quite a sweet spot at 1k. Not a big fan of the large form factor and numpad like I said, but 14" laptops seem to be rare at this kind of budget, probably not worth it to spend 2k just for that. And the simpler design is a lot nicer than the other gaming laptops at this price point imo.

    Main concern for me is the relatively high total system latency measured at 46ms according to this video https://youtu.be/W18HaYdl3VM?t=173, input lag is probably not a concern for most people but I've noticed some latency was affecting timing for rhythm games before when I tried a Razer Blade 15 (2021). I'm likely going to be playing more competitive titles that require precise timing (Valorant) so hopefully that result is more of a worse case scenario. If it turns out to be bad guess I'm screwed :)

      14-16" is the sweet spot:

      14 has me squinting at the screen sometimes but nice and portable
      16 is great for viewing and games, but just a little too cumbersome on a plane or manoeuvring with one hand

      In the end, I went to 16" as I'm a large guy who isn't as inconvenienced by the consequences
      (inb4 "that's what she said" and other genitalia-related jokes)

      Yes you are correct. I bought that February deal. Back then there was a mistake in the advert where the display spec says 300 nits for the ryzen 5800h. When we received the laptop the screen was tested to be 250 nits only (about 280 nits when measured). We all got a $100 refund because of the 300nits error, making our total purchase price as $1100. We choose the ryzen cpu because the advert for Intel says 250 nits display. the ryzen is more energy efficient on battery. The Intel version drain the battery fast but because this deal is $999 it is a very good deal

        Thank you for the detailed reply. I purchased one as it was a fantastic deal; however, was surprised by the lack of love for this deal in our Ozbargain community 212 votes vs 80 votes. Honestly HP build quality is better than some of the other brands at this price point.

          Quality wise, I do think it's quite good. I actually tried it in JB Hifi store before ordering and was surprised the keyboard was actually good. Even Jarrod has made positive comment about the keyboard, just don't get the white keyboard. Also a lot of gaming laptop don't have SD card which I wanted. The screen wobble isn't as bad as what everyone says. Our $1100 Ryzen model, despite only having 250 nits (which i felt is pretty bright and measured around 280 nits using phone app) has 100% sRGB which I like.

          The Lenovo edu deal below is better but not everyone has access to education store.
