Bargain. Got one for everyone in the family.

    • I thought it was brilliant. Rather than fiddle with an old console with a sub-HD screen, I could emulate one.

    • +17

It's me, your long lost brother

    • +4

What are you on about? Do you know how big the screen is? The resolution is more than enough.

      • -1

So if you bought a new android or iPhone and it was 800p you wouldn’t bat an eye?

        • They probably should've said "optimal for the form factor". Which it is. Higher res and you're gonna start running into issues. These handheld gaming screens look nice at these resolutions.

Can the Steam Deck hurry up and come to Australia. All the competitors are like 3 times the price.

    • +4

2025 at this rate. People who placed orders are still waiting for steam decks over 12 months later. Australia won't be getting them for years.

      • Valve said today they're shipping more than double the amount of Steam Decks every week.

      • +1

Nah we'll get steam deck 2

    • +2

i honestly think we are in a similar situation to the first iphone, where australia just didn't get it entirely

Instead, when steam makes a new between gen model, like a "steam deck pro", that's where they will have much higher production quantities better suited for selling world wide.

and IF we are to get the current steamdeck, it will be so late in the game that they will announce the next one shortly after.

before you ask, no i don't have some secret source or reference…..This is just my personal guesstimate

      • what? Australia didn't get the first iphone? I only came here few years ago so didn't know that

        • +2

correct, we didn't get the first iphone. The first iphone we got here was "Apple iphone 3g"

  • How long does the battery last?…

    • "Running at 15W will give you close to 3hrs gameplay on demanding games like Forza, while old school less demanding titles could push battery life closer to 4hrs. That said if you need to go 30W expect that to be almost half at 1.5hrs use. That said depending on what you are emulating you can adjust watts in order to obtain maximum battery life depending on current usage."

      • +1

Great, I could get 6 hours if I play Atari games.

  • +3

thanks OP, now I can fill the void of not owning a steam deck with this.

    • +1

Sadly think the steam deck is more of a dream for many including us Aussies. That said like everything I'd expect us to pay more.
I do believe they have created an unrealistic price benchmark though as they are selling the deck at a loss and can do so given they will make money from software licensing and other.

      • The counter to that is these products are always going to be a tiny niche market at those sorts of prices. The SteamDeck has the opportunity to push the entire environment forward both in hardware costs (due to scale) and software (that suits the handheld form factor which Windows most certainly does not).

        • Interesting topic with many angles, yes it is good for the consumers in the long term and will bring change, but you need to keep in mind they are losing money on hardware and that won't necessarily mean cheaper parts. We're all keen to see what the next 12-24 months look like in this space.

  • Wow that is niche.

  • Im holding out for the 6800U handhelds they are not far off and will pump out much more fps.

    • +3

Aya neo and Ayn Loki both have 6800u versions coming out this year for nearly have the price of this one.

      • Ayn Loki pro is estimated at AUD$1200 + shipping + import duties with a 6" screen and 512GB drive, who knows when we will see it or other proposed handhelds given the massive production delays experienced by these companies.

      • Yep i know this is why i said hold for the 6800u

  • +1

Rather wait for the upcoming GPD Win Max 2. Much better specs than this with a 6800 Ryzen instead. Should be available around August/September apparently. Better reputation too.

    • There's no way the Win Max 2 is available so soon.

(That's from Kendy Zhu, who is GDP staff)

The AMD version is finalising these few weeks. the Intel one has already been completed and samples have already been out for 2 months already. I believe manufacturing is starting next month and so is their Indiegogo campaign too from what she told me.

The Phawx has already previewed it:
        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-OBFenY4tw

GDP has a very good track record of delivery too - they met their schedules for the last few models I bought from them.

        • Good if you're happy to wait for a gaming PC. Not really comparable though to a pocketable handheld.

          • @electroarc: Lol. I wouldn't call the OneXPlayer to be very portable either:

            https://droix.co.uk/blogs/gpd-win-max-2021-vs-gpd-win-3-vs-o…

The only one that will actually fit into your pocket is the Win 3 (barely).

Can do so much more with a real keyboard - gives you an option to use a BT mouse to then play FPS's using Keyboard/Mouse along with the Gamepad inbuilt.

            • @bchliu: Thanks, I've read and seen the reviews as well. While GPD makes some nice stuff that's a gaming laptop - which is fine for some.
Add a BT keyboard and mouse to the oneXplayer and get the best of both worlds. Anyways enough said, thanks for your thoughts and take care ;-)

        • Ahh yep, I stand corrected. I realised The Phawx had his hands on it. I didn't realise they were so close to the mass production. Cool! Maybe it will be in the public's hands by Sept.

I was thinking back to the Win Max campaign and thought it was riddled with delays. Looking back though, it wasn't, just my own impatience!

  • Thanks op bought one for every kid in the street

  • Lol Vega, with RDNA 2 around the corner! Yeah, nah

  • Another really cool product. Judging from some of the comments here, there's some who don't really understand the market. It's a little beast - it can run games like Cyberpunk with an FPS consistently above 30. For a handheld, it's pretty awesome.

That price though - I can't get past that. That's not the OP's fault though.

  • Not sure if people realise what a beast this thing is and it's out now, not fictional or coming soon with unknown claims or unconfirmed price and availability.
Would be great if these were cheaper but wherever you look they are considerably over 2k. Those waiting for a 6800 processor are only going to be more deterred as it won't be any cheaper, not to mention who knows how chip shortages are going to affect production, and then there's our pretty average AUD dollar :-(.
Ayaneo is testing the waters locally through a reseller so all the big boys have the NEXT at $2099. That's $250 more for in essence the same experience, so if you think you'll be picking up any Ayaneo product cheaper locally, hold your breath..

    • Except there's already GPD Win Max, GPD Win 3 that is already in existence and well under $2k (Intel 11th Gen i7).

      • Thanks for sharing your opinions and good luck with windows driver compatibility on most games. There's a reason AMD is preferred in this space.
Not sure what value your GPD links bring though as you might save $50 if you're lucky after GST and Shipping and have ZERO warranty on an Intel-based machine.

        • I have the GDP Win 3 and have had zero issues with drivers.

I picked mine up used for $900 and at that price it's a bargain.

I'm with everyone else. The 6800u is the one to wait for, else any Xe or Vega based unit trade blows fairly well. Though the Intel units often also have the benefit of thunderbolt connection for an egpu when at home - for a more comprehensive gaming unit.

6800u will be a much less compromised unit, with the graphical power to drive higher fps.

AMD Vega does still slightly outdo Xe, and has better drivers, but it's a big step back from RDNA2 in the 6800u

          • @matthewperk: Hey Matthew you can't complain at $900 and sounds like you know your stuff :-). External GPU sounded very appealing but then was turned off Intel after speaking to a fair few people and reading a lot regarding major game compatibility issues using Intel.
From my standpoint, the OneXplayer 5800u is usually over AUD$2200 so questioning how soon we actually see a 6800u and what that means price-wise… and if the wait and potential extra spend are worth the benefit? Def get your point though - cheers.
