I bought a G15 5520 (i7-12700H, 16GB, 3060) to use for vMix video streaming with NDI, H.265 SRT, MADI audio, and H.264 recording. Handles it like a champ. Doesn't break a sweat.

The keylase nvenc patch looks like it works too.

No secondary NVMe SSD slot is a joke for this model.

    1080 lol it’s 2022

    • What's 1080?

      • +8

Its a move performed in certain free style sports like skate or snow boarding, Roller blading etc,

Not many people can pull it off easily.

        • So Believ3r is saying that this laptop can't perform that move, but instead it can perform that move 1.872 times?

          • @eug: You're welcome

          • +2

@eug: I feel if you close the lid for better aerodynamics and use a frisbee like motion, this laptop could achieve 1080.

  • No freesync/gsync? Really?

    • Only the Alienware models has g-sync, but you still can connect to an external monitor with g-sync support!

very bad laptop. overheats.. heats so much the back of laptop is hot to touch, i returned mine and i got it for 2100

  • -2

pretty good value, will chuck it on KLIM cooling stand as far as the heating goes, will give it a whirl for the specs at this price!

    • that makes it worse… ur blowing air into the laptop.. lol hot air. also it hits 60c+ just in homepage while doing nothing, thats bad.

      • Not so sure about the physics there. My current laptop sits on a klim - it is flush, so it looks as though the air that is already inside the laptop is just being blown out vents at the back and sides from the fans that are blowing from underneath. Maybe some of it comes back in, but gets circulated out again quite fast, along with mixing with cool air around the laptop.
It only looks like it has cooled my current laptop, so I'd guess it would do the same here.

Not arguing with the laptop being hot - I'm sure it must be, especially with 3070ti, and there are some mixed reviews about it, but it is a beast for the price and I'm willing to take my chances given how many good reviews there are (much more than the bad ones).

Otherwise I'm interested to find something similar if you know of it? (3070ti laptop around 2k?)

Reviews tend to skew negatively as people with bad experiences tend to be more vocal / likely to write a review than those with no issues - given that, it is still reviewed quite well.

I'm sorry that you had a bad experience, and it is helpful of you to warn others so thank you for doing that.

I reckon the Alienware with 5900H/3070 for the same price would be a better option. Less chance of having issues with overheating.

          • @mandelbrot: Thanks - does this look like a fair comparison?

            https://nanoreview.net/en/laptop-compare/dell-g15-5520-vs-de…

            • @catdogbarglar: What the specs don't tell you is that G Series are not built as well as Alienware, and have historically poor cooling. This causes the laptop overheat and thermal throttles, leading to it shutting down. I have a G5 and will never buy another G series again.
I am not sure if Dell have resolved those issues with this G15.

Also, I have done all I can to improve the thermals - reapplied thermal paste, undervolted and use a huge KLIM cooling stand. None of it makes a difference.

              • @mandelbrot: Fair enough - thanks for the info.

The alienware is tempting but I'm going to see how this one goes (want the extra cpu/gpu and ddr5 ram).

Will comment here once I've used it a bit.

As of the previous generation at least, the G15 is just about the same as the equivalent Alienware having the same motherboard, VRM, and near-identical cooling system.

                • @eug: I did suspect the alienware was paying for branding and aesthetics. The G line looks the goods for value for money when you compare the hardware specs.

        • ''looks'' best look up youtube, people show proof laptop fan coolers dont work.

          • @Rukiata: Thanks - from a quick search, the argument seems to be that the fans themselves don't do much, but the elevation the stand provides accounts for a significant drop in temperature

            • @catdogbarglar: people use heat tempture things to test and shown its done nothing no changes to cooling inside.
also that makes since probably cause the holes allows more airflow

              • @Rukiata: Thanks again.

I'm gonna give it a whirl anyway because I likey.

Will report back if my hands don't melt.

Surprised this is getting upvoted. This is Alienware territory. Would not recommend paying almost $2500 for a G15 body.

    • It's $2,031 after cashback.

    Fix the title.

It's RTX 3070Ti, not GTX hehe

  • The screen is pretty low, the Alienware model should have at least 2k, 1440p screen, not this shitty fhd!! I'd rather pay the same money for an Aftershock Vapour pro 15x!!

    • Alienware is also FHD if you go under $3000.

  • My experience with recent purchase of Dell g15 i712th 3060

    1. the Thing is bigand heavy, don't think of carrying it .
    2. keyboard is just ok. and overall build quality is ok
3, when web browsing ,fan can be loud already.
4, any game will cause almost 70-80 %fan noise.
5, If you are not gamer( very passionate about gaming, not light gamer like me, a few AOE4 game a day) , this thing maybe not for you.
6, I am going to return it tomorrow. lucky I only bought 1 ssd, not wasting anything.
  • If people are looking for a computer for casual gaming and graphics works with the flexibility of moving it around at home, then Intel/AMD laptops is the best choice. For those who want to carry a computer outside for work or other purposes without having to charge it in the middle of the day then Apple MacBook is the best choice!
