Serious question, why do people buy receivers?

Is it simply to get things like surround sound systems working, or is there other common uses?

To power better speakers, manage multiple input devices, extracting the highest quality sound before passing the video through to a TV or projector. Lots more than that I can't manage typing right now.

I have mine to drive my 7 speakers and 4 subs in a daisy chain.
9.2 would be a dream come true

yeah driving passive speakers in a surround setup is the main reason.

receivers are DAC with amps, but hilariously overpriced.

    • You connect all your HDMI devices to your Receiver, and then the Receiver acts as an HDMI switch for your display, whilst also driving your surround speaker setup.
Select a source on the receiver, and that device gets it's video pumped to the display and it's audio pumped to the speakers.

The only way to do this without a receiver, is to connect your devices directly to your display's HDMI ports (which are often more limited in number) and then use eARC to get the HDMI audio back out of the TV and into your audio system … and this audio system basically still needs to be a receiver in order to decode the HDMI audio.

    • A soundbar doesn't compete with an Av receiver, if you want a true home theatre experience, you want a receiver and descreetly driven speaker's.

  • Joyce Mayne is still a thing?

    • its gerry harvey in a old lady's dress and blue hair wig

Beautiful Receiver, but it's old and would not support the latest consoles HDMI 2.1 or EARC.

Agreed. I got one second-hand for a bit less than this last year.

Don't have any of the latest consoles or any desire to upgrade to them, so fulfills all my needs, including all the main audio streaming services, seamless streaming of FLAC encoded albums from my home network server, internet radio, DAB+ digital radio tuner, inbuilt phono amp and decent app to control from my phone.

Excellent receiver ( https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/yamaha-rx-a6a/usa/yama… ) but with outdated features such as HDMI 2.0 instead of HDMI 2.1. Even in 2019 it was priced lower than this ( https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/473951 ) so now it should be much lower.

    • RX-A6A looks like a fine receiver, but as a recently released model it comes at a premium price point (>$3,500 street).
