Travel Insurance Claim for Delayed Flight Causing Missed Flight

Hi guys,

Went on a trip recently and my SG airlines flight was 1hr late into Paris. Then Paris airport had a baggage glitch for 1hr causing me to miss my next flight on Vueling airlines. This forced us to pay 360 euro + 158 euro for the next flight and hotel room for the night.

To anyone who has experience with travel insurance, is this worth putting a claim in? I have travel insurance with my CC and also took out my own policy with RAC.

Cheers

Read your insurance PDS to see what's included and if you're covered for this scenario.

    • Can't find much. It does say 6hr minimum delay for my travel provider but not sure if this is the travel provider that I was meant to board, not a delay in leaving/getting to the airplane

Do you want accurate answers or guesses?
If the former, call your insurance.

      • +1

So 1 hour late + 1 hour baggage delay does not equal 6 hours.

As others have said call your insurer but I'd say your SOL.

Why did you buy travel insurance if you don't want to claim?

If ~$800 is pocket change for you then of course don't claim.

Isn't this is exactly what travel insurance is for?

    • Why did you buy travel insurance if you don't want to claim?

Lots of countries require travel insurance with covid cover for entry these days….

Isn't this is exactly what travel insurance is for?

But I agree, OP needs to contact them and see what they say.

  • You are best to ring the travel insurance provider to query. How long were you delayed? If it is a 6 hour minimum that might mean they expect the delay was more than 6 hours. It comes down to how long you left between when you were meant to get off one flight and on to the next one.

    • Damn, it's still living in your head rent free?? It really did affect some people's mental state ay.

lodge a claim and wait? Or you want us to do that while you travelling ? :)

  • is this worth putting a claim in?

Depends on what your insurer say and then work out if it is worth it for you, then post back with your outcome. /thread.

From recent experience with RAC (not travel though), claiming is quick, easy and costs nothing.

If they say no, you have lost maybe 10 minutes of your time,

    Is it April 1st again?

Whats the problem? Did I stain your pristine ozb feed?

      • Errr look at the other responses summed by "what did your insurer say" to see what the 'problem" is. Neg added for comment (and post) that, on the surface, seems frivolous.

        • -1

Yes I read those. Doesn't change the fact that people get triggered by a question?

As long as you have documented proof that you were delayed then you're fine. I asked for a printout from the help desk.

Happened to me in India, inbound flight to delhi was late by an hour, resulted in all my international connections lapsing - $400 in rebooking later.

Allianz were my underwriters and paid out within 2 weeks.

    • Allianz travel insurance (direct with Allianz anyway) seems quite good. I don't think I've seen another travel insurance that will cover delays that result in missed flights. Surely there's a cut off time? Booking a 30 minute transit isn't reasonable, but nothing specified in the PDS that I can see:

      https://travel.allianz.com.au/pds

      • All travel insurances should cover you for missed flights by no fault of your own (i.e caused by airlines/airport delays - although would be hard to prove).
If you miss it because you're late to the airport then it'll be on you.

        • I don't think that's the case. OPs RAC doesn't cover a missed connecting flight, nor does ANZ credit card travel insurance, covermore or 1travel.

Allianz is the first one I've looked at that does.

edit: Looks like covermore may actually cover things

should have had a wider time between flights to allow for issues like this.
dont have a small gap with a poxy airline on the tail end of it, or book it all under one booking.

a true ozbargainer would have a 12 hour wait between flights, and even if that means standing outside the airport through the night in the cold chain smoking thats what needs to be done

    • Agree. Back to back with domestic flights is pushing your luck let alone international.

    • tbh a true ozbargainer books back to back flights knowing the last flight of the night is too close to catch, thereby requiring an overnight stay and a travel insurance claim. He/She then rebooks on the afternoon flight the next day after enjoying the city free of charge.

      • your claim may be denied, never the less waiting ages.
your excess is more than the hotel?
        don't follow your logic.

true ozbargainer searches sky scanner and sorts by duration descending, finds a reasonably priced flight with insane wait times and maximum connections (free visits), and then lie to other half saying that all you could find.

Hahaa touche. It was more of a post in jest.

tbh though dealing with amex travel insurance (through chubb) is good. nil excess, they paid really fast last time our flight got delayed due to weather.

    • Icing on the cake was that i didn't book it, it was an STA Travel booked flight, did query it at the time and was told by the 'expert' "she'll be right, i travel in India all the time", .

Made a complaint after getting back. Last time i ever used a holiday booking service, everything i do is online now and never really had an issue..

It's not worth putting a claim in

note have no idea if it's worth putting a claim in and the above is general advice on shitposting forums on a bargain website

  • How much is your excess. I've had similar issues and the excess was more than the airline fees

  • Next time, try to get everything ticketed as a single itinerary. Let the airlines sort it out for delays and missed connections.
As for travel insurance, call the insurer and ask including what documentary evidence is required.

It sounds that you have booked separate tickets, so its up to you to ensure adequate connection times. I would also imagine that the airline didn't help as they would not be aware you had a connecting flight

  • I think you are trying to mix two different parts of the insurance cover.
Extra expenses incurred due to missed flights for no fault of yours would be covered. There is no minimum delay time for this. You will need to pay the excess though.
The six hour delay you refer to is just a inconvenience reimbursement if your flight is delayed for more than 6 hours (not missed flight). This covers for food, phone calls, accommodation or whatever else. I have 28 Degrees card, which pays merely because a flight is delayed.

I appreciate this reply. Thanks very much

  • Looking at RAC travel insurance, I don't think you can claim against their policy. Seems it covers you for costs associated in catching a flight that has been delayed. As in, costs covering your accommodation and whatnot until the flight is available.

    • What about Allianz, I've got a CC with them?

      • +1

You will need to specify which credit card you have and read the corresponding PDS. Allianz is the insurer but the policy will differ based on the specific card. FWIW the accommodation component here would likely be covered under the Allianz policy (if you buy directly from them) under "Travel Delay Expenses", as it covers an uncontrolled delay to your journey, as opposed to the RAC policy which only covers delay to your scheduled transport.

        • NAB Qantas Signature Card. I believe it is just the Allianz PDS https://travel.allianz.com.au/pds as some of the wording from this was quoted in Nabs memo: https://www.nab.com.au/content/dam/nab/documents/policy/insu…

@shapebuster: It is not correct to assume these covers are the same. They may have different inclusions/exclusions/limits.

In this case, you should be able to claim under the "Travel Delay" cover as listed in the NAB PDS for the accommodation expenses incurred provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

            • @CaptainHoltisDad: I won't be able to claim the new flight will I? Probably not worth it then since the excess is roughly the same as my accommodation expenses.

              • @shapebuster: I would suggest you read your PDS carefully. It clearly states on Page 28 there is no excess associated with the "Travel Delay" cover.

              • @shapebuster:

If during the period of cover available for your journey,
your scheduled transport is cancelled, delayed, shortened
or diverted and that means you would not arrive at a
wedding, funeral, conference, 25th or 50th wedding
anniversary, pre-paid ticketed concert or pre-paid ticketed
                sporting event on time

If you had an event you had to attend then perhaps?

                • @Autonomic: No, because their "scheduled transport" was not cancelled, delayed, shortened or diverted - that flight left on time. Missing your scheduled flight would not be covered.

                  • @CaptainHoltisDad: Could it not be argued that the scheduled flight was the one that got delayed that I was on? I.e the flight I got before the missed flight?
