[eBay Plus] Garmin Edge 530 GPS Bike Computer - $314.10 Delivered @ BikeBug eBay

180
PLRANGE1

This is not going to be a deal for everyone, but if you have been considering an Edge unit, this seems to be the cheapest post for the Edge 530 for Australian stock.

There have been a couple of deals just under $300 delivered via Amazon (UK stock) but if buying local is important (warranty, maps, supporting the not-so-big-retailer) then this is a better deal.

Don't forget 3% discounted eBay gift cards via Shopback.

Cheers

I picked one of these up a couple of years ago for $225 during Garmin's 'error' 50% off site-wide. Solid unit, good battery life, more metrics than you can poke a stick at, good upgrade on the Edge 500 I had previously.
Was tempted at the time to go up to an 830 but have found the size and function of this unit perfect for my use case. $314 is a good price if you are looking for an upgrade or starting to get enthusiastic about cycling and going for longer rides. Inclusion of maps can be a big help if you're going off your usual route.

    • Obvious difference is the lack of touch screen. I always wondered if that was an advantage, as Edge touch screens can be unreliable, and perhaps the button movement is intuitive. How have you found using buttons rather than a touch screen?

      • +3

i 'downgraded' from 830 to 530 because of touch screen. Even on a good dry day, a touch screen is so clumsy to use and not as responsive as buttons. If you ride in rain, good luck with it.

        • Agreed, touch screen on a bike computer in my experience haven't been a good thing. I played around with a mate's one and it wasn't a great experience.
For cold mornings where I wear gloves, it definitely would not be fun.

          • @sobriety22: I ordered an Edge 530 from insurer after my bike was stolen and they replaced it with an 830 as they had no 530s in stock. How is the 530 functionality with buttons - would you say it's similar to 830 except do it all via buttons, or does it lack features but they're not that important and you don't miss them?

@y2k: Sorry off topic, bike insurance or home and contents?

              • +1

@JJlikes2eat: Home and Contents, NRMA. Some bugger nicked my bike and its various bits from our apartment garage

            • @y2k: It was @Aaroninau that did the change from 830 to 530. I only did a short trial with the 830. I have not had any issues with using the physical buttons as long as it is on the out-front mount and I have access to the buttons unobstructed by my light. Features wise the 530 has all I could require. I setup my custom screens so I only ever use one on my commutes and a second one on climbs. It has an auto-scroll function so you can have it go through your screens without even touching a button if you have more data you want to see but overall I tend to try and concentrate on the road and what's ahead more than look at my computer too much.
The advantage that the 830 has is it is able to do on-device routes to an address. I could see that feature being really useful if you are bike-packing or on a cycling holiday and I haven't required that yet as I mainly commute or do weekend rides on roads I know or on pre-loaded courses.

@sobriety22: Yeah, I used to use the Navigation feature much more but I don't do that kind of riding any more (got kids) and found I was always stopping to double check with Google anyway. I use the Di2 shifter buttons to scroll through screens.

I was more curious about how the buttons go when you do need to interact with stuff that's within various menus and widgets eg set a bike alarm, turn off ANT+ lights, dismiss phone messages etc.

  • Good luck ever getting anything fixed under warranty with this mob. I think they have been taken over by Pushys so hopefully it will get better but for now steer well away..

    • +7

You can just go to garmin. i had an old edge bought from 99 bikes but for warranty i went to garmin directly and provides the receipt. no issue at all.

      • +2

Yep, thats what I do with Garmin as well (Garmin are actually really good with warranty stuff). Just saying dont expect anything from BikeBug, they happily ignore pretty much every consumer code going..

    • +1

They have been taken over by Pushys and retail stores are gone as well

      • Far out. Is there another bike store in their old retail locations or is it just gone?

        • +3

Think they're just gone. I am going to make more of an effort to support more smaller local bike shops where I can.

          • +1

@BugsBunnyAUS: Yeah really. I used to get parts from bikebug Prahran. It was really handy.

            • @lychnis: Same. They were very competitively priced with friendly staff. Sad they closed down their LBS presence ☹️

    • Garmin are pretty awesome though at post sales service from the two times I’ve dealt with them

  • Man! I was just looking at this and the 830 this morning. They just released the 1040, so a 540 and 840 might not be far away

    • +1

I know, I've told myself for months to wait for the 540 but I just couldn't resist any more.

  • I've got the 520. How much better is the 530? My battery life on the 520 is not fantastic now. Basically have to charge after every ride, if bluetooth is switched on.

    • +2

I have a 520 and recently upgraded to the 530. I had even put a new battery in my 520 so its battery life was like when it was new, but the 530 is much better. Feel like about twice as much battery life. I was running the Varia radar with the 520 and the battery life was terrible. Max like 2.5 hours. 530 gets over 10 hours with varia running and much more with it off. Otherwise the experince is similar to the 520… though I did find the buttons easier to find and use on the 520.

      • Thanks so much for the info!

  • Is there any way to set this up to enable navigation home from a random spot or is that an 8xx+ feature?

  • Was looking at one of these the other day. Sick of my crap strava recording on my phone. This should be perfect at recording rides and the live segments will be interesting. Bonus is this unit will connect to my Steps motor for even more data!
