  • doesn't the m2 blow the m1 out of the water?

    • No, more like a kiddy pool wave.

Not really, the issue is that if you really need the performance, M1 Pro is still the way to go. Also, two issues identified so far:

      • The 256GB SSD model uses a single NAND chip, instead of 2 in M1. The controller doesn't seem to be able to run in maximum channel mode, resulting in half of SSD performance compared to M1's 256GB SSD. 512GB SSD on M2 does beat M1. The 256GB SSD performance figures are bad for an NVMe SSD.
      • Apple is far too passive on the fan control for M2, so when pushed, M2 could enter thermal protection state, which somewhat defeats getting the 13 inch MBP (what's the point of having the fan if Apple don't turn it on when needed). There is a 3rd party app to change the fan curve. Also, once you upgrade to 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, the price gap to M1 Pro narrows.

The improved media encoding, while better than M1, still doesn't get close to M1 Pro based model, so what exactly is M2 geared towards? Still single external display. Unclear about the USB and Thunderbolt speed transfer issue yet.

        Great response

  • Wait for the 15inch MacBook Air.

    • How do you know that's coming?

      • Ming-Chi Kuo and Mark Gurman indicated Apple planning to release MBA 15 inch in 2023. Those 2 are generally the most trusted sources outside Apple. It kinda makes sense as it will stop people having excuse of 8GB RAM with 256GB SSD hardly seem "Pro".

It's NOT Apple official announcement so take that as a rumour.

        • the macbook air is their entry model, and 13” is an easy desk size for students in class , etc. for apple to release a 15” macbook air apple would still need a small model for students and they aren’t into making too many models in a segment / target market ….. the US school market is big for apple and they are currently betting a lot on ipads as does it all unless they have a school, friendly laptop in the catalogue ….

Cancel it is easier (unless you want a new toy yourself).

  • Beware, all MacBook components are not upgradable!!

  • 13 inch as a laptop is too small for real work such as simple word processing…. spreadsheet..,one need at least 15 inch to work with. 13 inch laptop is only good for casual web surfing and photo editing but we might as well get an iPad for that!!
