Surely there are much much much cheaper ways to achieve the same thing?

    • +7

Well when you go Hue, you dont look at anything else, because you have already went through the set up and you have already spent the money on quality
And so, people like myself who will stick with the Product, even known it is expensive

      • +1

I agree with the reliability that hue products have however it doesnot fully come from hue as the product, but the zigbee it uses. As a result, all the alternatives that use the same method of connection and compatible with hue range is worth a consideration.

From the product, in terms of the color accuracy or brightness, no, hue is good but not the top norch in the market. Have a look at lifx for example, their lights are pretty good for the color and brightness, unfornately they do not use zigbee. As a result, hue is actually a compromise to me for the lighting benchmark.

The ikea products, and other cheaper alternatives that are compatible with hue, are definitely worth considering and can achieve better outcome (ie, the downlight from hue is pretty dim) in different situations.

        • +1

After using Lifx for a few years now I'm done with them. Bought a few more bulbs couple of weeks ago and they have been a pain! Keep dropping off the network after a few hours. All the older bulbs stay connected. Maybe drop off every few months, not after a few hours.
Even upgraded my router to the Netgear Nighthawk RAX70 (thanks Ozb for the recommendation), still happens. Even after all the troubleshooting recommendations from Lifx.
Going to be returning the new bulbs and switching to Philips Hue. Just waiting for Prime Day next week.

When comparing the subreddits for both brands you can see which users are less frustrated with their smart globes.

People always like to take the cost of all components and complain about final product to be too expensive.

Philips charges premium price but they spend a lot of these money in firmware development, software development, backend infrastructure support and lifetime free use of that infrastructure.

Yes, you can achieve very similar results with open source software (keywords to Google: HomeAssistant, WLED, ESP32, WS2812B) if you are ready to set it up, host it and maintain it.

A lot of people are not ready for that and Hue products are easy to use, ready to go of the box, quality option for them. :)

There are way way cheaper options - but the Phillips Hue stuff is really solid and the whole setup works super well.

I grabbed one of the packs years ago with the LED Lightbulbs, response time and reliability of them is just 10/10 compared to every other cheap version I've bought. Still, I'm not made of money, ended up using much cheaper Zigbee downlights.

As per above comments, Hue products are really good but also being 3-10x the price of other products, sometimes you wonder if its actually worth it?

      • each to their own really
its what ever you want to buy
Hue has also better products (IMO only) , like floor lamps, outside strips etc etc, sit all day and debate who and what is better, again at the end of the day, its the users choice

        • +3

and what point do you stop ignoring the price and consider cheaper products? Would you still stick with the product if it was $1770 instead of $177? Are you a buyer of Hue no matter what the cost?

I agree and have hue products and they are so good but I always see how much cheaper other brands are and say am I willing to pay more for hue or go through a bit more trouble to setup and go with something cheaper.

          • +2

@Turbonetics: I think sometimes you pay for the reliability, accuracy, and lack of issues. Sometimes it's worth 3x, sometimes more, sometimes it isn't. Like the guy above said, once you're invested in the ecosystem, everything plugs in seamlessly.

I have only a few hue products, but the way i've looked at it is i've already got the hub, so everything can connect into that - and I can just keep adding to it without issues (none yet so far). Can't complain - but it's not for everyone, there are other competitors that do a similar job.

            • @jaygee: I have a mix of products - Hue / Mirabella Genio / others. All work fine together as I have connected them to google home. The other products dont need a hub so I am not worried about having to buy 3 different hubs.

I just go for the best value but if Hue is only a little bit more than I go with Hue for that extra ease of use.

          • +1

@Turbonetics: i have already have a full lounge room and Bedroom set up for Hue, no point going cheaper
if the Product was $1770 i will wait for the price goes down , which it does (like this ?) or when the new floorlamp when down at JB, got me 2x of them , awesome deal

When ever I see a Hue deal, this is the first thing that comes to mind.

maybe you should look into it and know what Hue devices are ?

      • +1

        I know what they are.

Huey was just iconic in the 90s and 00s. It will always jog my memory.

        Surely you watched his show?

        • I remember Huey was always on tv after school

          Certainly was iconic

This is the UK version so just be aware that means UK plugs

    • have a look at the description field, i placed a link for UK plugs

      • +4

shame you cant get the plug adjuster thing that slides into the brick, they seem to give every different type except the one for australia

        • could invent something like that

  • Can this plug into the movement sensor and be used as a night light as well that turns on only when activated

    • You don't plug them into hue motion sensors, but the motion sensor can definitely be used to turn it on and off.

    • If you've got a Hue Hub and Indoor Sensor, sure can! You can even make it act differently depending on the time of day or ambient light in the room.

We have Hue everywhere and wanted a strip under our bathroom cabinet that would sync with the other Hue downlights in the bathroom, so grabbed this over the much cheaper alternatives. If you're not in the Hue ecosystem, I'd look elsewhere, but I couldn't think of another way to get a LED strip that synced perfectly with our Hue lights.

    • -2

Hue is awesome, i cannot get enough, as i said to someone else, most times i wait for them to go on sale(like this) on which they do alot

      • I gave up buying Hue because their hub only supports 60 globes which is crap. Unfortunately most people dont find this out until they have spent a bunch on the system. And btw no i didn't neg you.
