Best Comprehensive Car Insurance for Old Cars

After reading all stories of people being in accidents with no insurance, we should have this pinned on ozbargain :).

Just reading all stories, you just need to have comprehensive insurance even if you are not all fault to avoid hassle to chatting someone.

I haven't looked at how much third party insurance cost but I've been getting AAMI insurance with very high excess for around $360 in NSW. So in case of accident, I essentially can write off my car as worst case scenario. Their premium gone up to $420.

Just wondering anyone got insurance recently for this and which insurers are good for this scenario?

    avoid hassle to chatting someone.

That’s why they post on OzB 1st to the Accident Anonymous hotline.

  • I haven't looked at how much third party insurance cost but I've been getting AAMI insurance

Don't. Go with someone slightly more reputable than AAMI, or did you miss the thread about the leaking dishwasher where they denied the claim because he used the word "leak" rather than "burst"?

i would switch now, while you haven't had any accidents or claims to disclose to a new insurer.

      That's goes with every insurer.

      • An AAMI spokesman said the couple's business was not the same as a lemonade stand and they had a registered ABN, signage, and a Facebook page for the business.

I don't know why ppl AAMI bashing, but I had no issues claiming from them though out the years. Although they start to get more expensive.

      • Which shows the importance of being honest when you fill out applications.

Now that they have declared $60-70 per week income, they can expect some fun with the ATO too.

Try coles or WW, you get shopping discount as well but always read the PDS.

    • Thanks. I'll check them

      • Recently I used this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/636126 and got $100 as well. Plus 10% off once per month.
At that time, they were like $150 cheaper than AAMI/Allianz for me.
There were slight differences within PDS but not bad for old car.

  • What insurance do you plan to have if you have an accident that is your fault and write off a BMW worth $60,000?. Regardless of whether you write off your car or not as this is what 3rd party insce covers

  • around $360 in NSW

    What postcode?

  • Every insurance company has the same DNA.

  • Define 'old car'

    • Not that old. Honda Civic. But for insurance purposes they value it under $4000-$5000

      • For that price, just do third party and have funds available in case some no name bastard hit you and do the runner.

Not sure it’s possible to have a best. too many variables.

  • Is comprehensive worth it for your car? If your car isn't worth much, it's probably not worth having. Third party property yes, but if your car is worth 1k, why pay an extra few hundred a year to get paid 1k if you crash it?

    • I happen to be looking for a cheaper alternative to AAMI as well, but can't find anything more than $20 different to my renewal. (Some are $100 more)

      I'm driving a 16yo car, agreed $2,700, excess $800.
      3rd party is $380, comprehensive is $460

      • With AAMI, just get a new policy every year online and you get a discount. I switched to full comp from 3rd party and saved about $80. Then I bought a new home insurance policy with them and combined it with contents, raised the rebuild value and somehow saved $150.
I don’t understand their quote logic, but I’m saving by getting a new policy every time it comes up for renewal.

you'd be lucky to find a usable car for a grand with Covid Tax…. ya 1500 shitbox is currently 4000+

I'm guessing you haven't come across no insurance threads and people hit with else case scenarios. Lots of unfortunate and sad stories.

I've only seen third party issues. If you can afford to just pay to get it fixed, don't insure.

I can't afford to fix some guys Ferrari, so I get insurance for that. I can afford to my own car, so I don't insure that. I don't insure my TV either

        • Sure. Do you recommend anyone for third party insurance? I think they call it TPP cover or something

        • +1

Plenty of threads around owners with TPP who have had their car damaged by another and struggle to get money from the other party, for a variety of reasons. Or they’ve hit someone else with TPP and are then out of luck repairing their own vehicle.

If you cannot afford to be without your car, or cannot afford to replace it at short notice then you should get comprehensive. If you can afford to lose your car or replace it out of your own funds then TPP is suitable for you.

          • @Euphemistic: Yeah i agree. That's why i don't mind paying extra and get that comprehensive insurance with high excess instead of TPP

  • Bit late to the thread, however;

In a similar situation, I just had 3rd party. When the excess is equal to 60%+ of the car's value, it's not worth the comprehensive. YMMV.

    • How much do you pay roughly for third party insurance? So not the mandatory green slip one as that's just for personal injury but extra tpp insurance

      • Was about $20 a month.
