I read that consumer Portal devices have been discontinued as Meta wants to focus on business conferencing products. Maybe that's why?

Damn, that is cheap. Mine's been working well for 10 months but the remote has stopped working. Facebook are now sending a new one - warranty process was straightforward.
So can I close this so it basically so it doesn't listen and I only turn it on when I want to make a call?

yes, has a video slider off and mic disable button on the device.
multiple fb profiles work as well - just keep switching it on the home screen like a netflix home screen.
Would you trust a mic disable button on a meta product? Better just unplug it.

Can anybody comment on the quality of the microphone(s) on this? Does it have trouble picking up your voice from a meter or 2 away?
We sit 3 - 3.5m from ours and mic is great.
They really are a great product. Shame it’s from Facebook.
It’s an excellent video conferencing tool in all respects in my experience. Audio and video quality both excellent.
The hardware is absolutely top notch. it picks up voices from 4-5 metres for us.
Can't think of a company I'd want listening in on my conversations less than Meta… actually no, Uber, but Meta very close 2nd.
FB should pay me $79 instead, so they can spy on me 24/7 :)

This would have been nice to replace the software on, given wide angle camera and 8 microphone array I can see in the teardown. I can't see the processor since they've stacked it underneath the memory, but it's almost assuredly a Qualcomm one of some sort given the rest of the board. Possibly a QCS605, since most of their lineup appears to be based on that solution.
Too bad the chances of a bootloader unlock on this are roughly… 0%.
I would have liked to put the thing into host mode and start streaming the camera/microphone output. Janky webcam ahoy. Oh well.
Does this do whatsapp group call when there's more than 2 people in the call?
I noticed the desktop app in windows or MacOS doesn't support group calls, wasn't sure if this limitation is also in the portalI got one and no group calls unfortunately.

I really like the portal tv… but having a wall mounted tv is annoying as I have to prop it up on a box to get the best angle.

Been using this for 10 months, great for video calls with grandparents as it focusses really well on kids.
BUT… Almost gave an attack to my better half last week when it woke itself up automatically to show an ad at 3 AM in the night. THIS DEVICE IS POSSESSED ;)
