Was on the lookout for a cheap subwoofer for my study - this came up as a good buy. Not powerful but i think it will do the job.

    • ROFL, gotta love the politically correct negging me. Get a life

      • I gave a positive as it reminded me of my Sunday nights watching DCOA on Twitch 😊

      • Yeah I'm middle Eastern and loved the joke, not sure why it was negged.

    oh choice bruuuu

  • I have this sub in my study, paired with Edifier 1850DB speakers. It's a bit OTT for study audio, but sounds great. 👍

  • Bought the 200b as a replacement in 2020 for my monitor audio 10" whilst I was trying to repair the built in amp. If you have nothing to compare it to it's decent and I paid 360 for that, I wouldn't go lower unless I really had to so my advice is go give this a listen somewhere before spending 299 on it

  • I don't think $300 is what one would actually consider cheap.

Here are two cheaper options I just saw by searching the Subwoofer category.

You have linked one subwoofer that only works with it's companion soundbar. Not really a fair comparison is it now?

      • It's would not be that hard to open it up and connect an analog input jack to the circuit board, whether that be directly or through an ADC. It does not seem that risky given it's only $30.

Also you conveniently ignored the $170 option, which if you click through other posts is available now for $239 which is still significantly less than the Yamaha in OP's post.
If you wait around it could come down to $180-$200 again.

        • As it turns out, I tried just that with the JBL subwoofer you linked. Firstly, the sound quality was… very average. Also, the cost, with the plate amplifier (which failed) and the replacement stand-alone amplifier (because you can't use the amplifier it comes with), ended up costing almost this much, plus my time and voided warranty. So no, this is not such a great idea to save a couple of $.

          • @goose25: Did you really need to purchase an entire plate amplifier?

I would have thought there is no need to mess with the Power supply and Amp that's already included.
It should either have digital or analog input on the amplifier that's already in there. Most will have both, but it should definitely have digital input if it works wirelessly with a soundbar.
If it's analog it's easier. If it is digital only, then you could have just got a cheap ADC?

            • @harshbdmmaster718: It's not possible. The amplifier included would ONLY work with a digital, wireless signal, there was nothing analog on it to tap into. The 3.5mm port on the back could only be used for firmware updates. If you're really interested, there's photos on OzB of the amplifier.

              • @goose25: Well I don't have one so it's not much concern to me. But usually if it's got wireless it will have a "wireless component" which taps into the digital input.
Unless JBL made it intentionally hard to modify in which case the wireless circuit will be completely integrated therefore making it hard or impossible to physically connect to the digital input.

Usually manufacturers use cheap off the shelf components for the internals so it usually is not that hard to find the specific components and diagrams to understand what is where. I don't know about JBL but maybe they thought it was worth it to make it hard to modify, possibly to protect sales for their other ranges of products.
