Been on the look out for a decent Mesh WiFi system that's not going to cost a small fortune. I missed the last ebay deal where it was ~$650. Cheapest I can find it locally is $845 at Wireless 1 so looks like a pretty good deal to me

EDIT

Looks like the UK model has some issues with restrictions on 5Ghz bands which can't be fixed with a simple firmware update. Thanks to everyone that pointed this out in the comments

Don't do it! It's restricted in frequencies it can utilises, particularly on the 5ghz range and cannot be firmware'd to enable the missing frequencies. It's not worth paying a close to premium price for such a major flaw, (I got mine, the Aus version, for 660 on eBay after various coupons earlier this year)

Avoid this uk model at all costs!

      • Seconding this - its night and day difference to AU model

        • Is the US model same ? Its available via Amazon US for ~US$425 (AUD 630??) including shipping.

  • this is tempting. Is it better than the deco x90?

    • I think they're about on par with each other judging by the specs

So what now? This or Netgear AX4200 or eero 6 pro? I'm so confused right now!!!

    • Depends what you need, I need wireless backhaul and this has a dedicated band for it so that's why I chose this. I've also had Netgear Orbi in the past and had lots of stability issues with it, so personally didn't want to go back to Netgear.

I'd avoid the eero tbh, it's fairly locked down in terms of configuration

Had the Netgear Orbi AX4200 for over 6 months, it has been extremely stable and fast, I get over 900Mbps between the router and two satellites over the wireless back haul through a few walls 10~15m apart Here is a quick LAN speed test I just did between a PC connected to the router and another connected to a satellite. I also get 10Mbps+ from almost ~100m down the street 5 houses away (line of sight), which is crazy!. If you want really fast WiFi and a very long range the Orbi will not disappoint. However, they lack lot of advanced network features offered in other routers like Asus, Ubiquiti etc. you even have to pay an additional subscription to get parental control, which IMHO is very disappointing for the price you pay for the hardware. I had an Orbi Wifi5 system before therefore knew about the limitations going in, but I also knew they perform well so compromised on features for speed.

When I bought mine I was also torn between this Asus and the Orbi AX4200, but then Orbi went on sale and I also needed 3 units so my decision was mainly cost driven. But if both are at the same price and you only need 2 units then I'd get the Asus because of the extra features and even higher backhaul bandwidth. Although I have heard the UK variant's WiFi signal is not as strong as the AU variant, so you may want to investigate that further.

      • Amazing write up, thank you.
Currently deciding between all routers you mentioned. Orbi at $535 for a 2 pack is in the lead so far

  • the reviews are pretty bad lol

After 12mths use the AU model is really good. Coverage ia outstanding (i still get almost fill signal 20m & 4 walls away).

What are the reviews saying is bad?

it's the UK version so meant for UK while the AU version is meant for AU, some people can get the UK version and make it work but it is hard that is why it's best never to get a international version of modems/routers as it is just asking for headaches.

The AU version seems to be really good, in fact AU version is probably one of the best Mesh systems you can get so far

yeah been looking for this but Australian version to go on sale for around $500.
Buying International comes with problems so don't recommend anyone get this

I managed to price match this at Officeworks. Just called and did it over the phone. Maybe try your luck if your after one.

    • you're lucky as I tried a couple of my local OW and was told it's a different model number :(

    • Did you call a store directly or the 1300 number? Going to try my luck

      • +1

Yep I just called the 1300 number. They are delivering it tomorrow.

        • Sweet, I'll give that a try. Thanks

    • You have been extremely lucky, I have had trouble getting them to price match even Australian models sold on Amazon AU let alone a UK grey import!

    • wow sooo lucky
