    Says $259???

Also, not seeing any USB ports if that’s a killer for anyone

    • +2

Under the price for me it says "Redeem promo code: I82KT4H8" and you need to click on Redeem to add the 28% discount.

      • I had to refresh the page as when I did that it said two or more to apply discount. After refreshing it works, weird.

    • +2

Has a single USB 3.0 port on the side. Can kinda see it in the first photon on the Amazon listing.

      • +2

You have better eyes than me lol, time for OPSM ;)

        • +6

          should have gone to specsavers

        • +1

Ha! I also own one so I know its there. Can be swapped between USB 2.0 and 3.0: https://imgur.com/a/y1nayvW

        • You have better eyes than me lol, time for OPSM ;)

I'll say, if they can pick out individual photons.

      • I own this. Can confirm 1 x USB 3.0 on the side. Oh nevermind, you own it too :D

    • It's on the left hand side of the unit.

  • +1

Fantastic router, even if you aren't going to use all the additional features (vpn server etc).

    • +2

Totally agree. Very happy with my purchase, had it since march 2024. No problems at all rock solid.

Will buy Flint 3 when I have more devices that use Wi-Fi 7.

  • This or wait for 3?

    • +6

People saying apart from wifi 7 it looks like a downgrade?? Chipset wise

    • +3

I got the 2 because openwrt support is a lot better, 3 has a new chipset support might be flaky depends on what developers can do.

Ideally I would personally prefer openwrt to a closed source Chinese firmware on my router, but the gl.inet firmware is very nice, robust and user friendly so it's upto you.

    • +2

This, unless you really need WiFi 7

  • Mine seems to hang and disconnect once a week or so. Had it about a month now

Have to pull the power and put back in and then up and running again

    • I've seen a few comments like this. Have you updated the firmware on the device?

      • yeah from day 1 when i got it.

I also have a scheduled reboot at 3am 3x a week to "flush" things

        4.7.7 is the latest

        • You can't return it? Sounds like u got a lemon

        • Just out of curiosity, why need 3x reboot/week. This is not the good way for a router supposed to be running consistently as whenever rebooting, it needs to establish the connection with isp again and again

          • @ginger-gin: To try and solve these issues I put it in

            • @daft009: Got this from amazon yesterday and got it set up.
Internet connection seems to disconnect after a while when I log in to the router interface to inspect the settings.
"The interface is connected, but the Internet can't be accessed"
              Also latest firmware 4.7.7

    • I've had my Flint 2 for ~6-weeks. Rock solid performance, not had to reboot it once.

As a stability test, I also didn't enable the Scheduled reboot and still have no issues (the router reboot disconnects the VPN on my work laptop).

I had to schedule a daily reboot on my old TPG router and I still had reliability issues.

I'm very happy with this router and my Wi-Fi signal strength upstairs is full strength, TPG router low strength.

I also love the built-in AdBlock to filter out all the ads across all devices.

    • I also just got one from Amazon, and dropped maybe 4 times in a 4 days. I have fixed wireless from Aussie and the device may take a few mins to get a connection from aussie or 20 mins.

It seems like a good router but I am thinking this may be a deal breaker. I am coming from a asus with merlin on it and it was rock solid. The Flint not so much at this stage

  • +3

This or AX86U Pro for $300 for someone who doesn't have the knowledge or time to stuff around getting features to work and wants plug and play?

    • +10

I'd get the Flint 2 and spend the money you saved on hookers and cocaine.

    • Also been hearing the 86u pro regularly requires reboot for 2.4ghz issues, if peeps can discuss their experience on that

    • I have the Flint 2 and it was very easy. If you aren't going to use the additional features then are generally disabled by default. All I had to do was plug in my internet connection, then kick my connection with NBN to get it to reconnect on the new router.

    • This.

    • +1

I've had that Asus for 3 years now. It's a great router, especially with Merlin.

However, the Flint has better specs, I'd probably get it instead if I were in the market now.

    • This. I had both, IMO there's no advantage to the ASUS unless you will use the proprietary mesh features.

    • Had both and returned the Asus to Amazon. Both are good - the Asus has a more fancy GUI.

The the flint 2 has longer range even on 5ghz - I can walk out to road at the front of my house through multiple walls, and is just quicker. It’s been rock solid thankfully. I couldn’t justify paying $100 more for no benefit.

  • great price for a solid unit. Have been using it for a few weeks.

  • +3

may I just confirm that this works with directly plugging the ethernet cable from nbn box (FTTP NBN)?

    • +2

      Yeah it does.

      • cheers

      • I have the same question as it's been so confusing since NBN landed. Telco's use the word modem and router interchangeably.

Is nbn black box = modem?

Can I therefore buy a flint 2 and plug it straight to the nbn black box if I'm switching to another provider like superloop?

Currently with optus that has provided their own modem/router. Dunno what you call it.

        • +1

Put your address in here: https://www.nbnco.com.au/ and tell us the results.
This will allow people to establish if you need a modem or not.

          • +1

@Limbot: nbn black box is HFC.

        • +1

nbn HFC NTD box is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Plug in the Flint 2 router to the nbn HFC NTD box. Flint 2 can be setup with any provider.

Optus provide a VDSL2 modem and router all-in-one for the many different nbn tech types.

Note that the nbn boxes are different depending on the nbn tech type.

HFC = nbn NTD box + Optus router (Optus VDSL2 modem is not in use).
HFC = nbn NTD box + GL.iNet Flint 2 router.

FTTP or Fixed Wireless = nbn NTD box + GL.iNet Flint 2 router.
FTTC = nbn NCD box + GL.iNet Flint 2 router.
          FTTN or FTTB = VDSL2 modem + GL.iNet Flint 2 router.

          • +1

@Twix: greatly appreciate your detailed explanation ! many thanks twix :)

          • @Twix: did you install any additional plug ins? just realised it doesn't have firewall or ddos protection like the ASUS TUF-ax4200 Router

            • @deskii: I don't use the Flint 2. Maybe @Pashka can help you there.

          • @Twix: I just bought this router and have no idea to upgrade from my old TPG Archer VR1600v. Did you just plug this into the NBN box or do you need to do something else? I get to the change password page http://192.168.8.1/ after connecting to the NBN box, but then nothing. Any tips?

            • @ghoulie1: You have to configure it to your ISP. Are you with TPG?

Do you have nbn FTTP, HFC, FTTC?

              • @Twix: TPG HFC. I have just realised that this is a router only so I should connect into the old modem in bridge mode??

                • @ghoulie1: No, you don't use bridging. Do you use the TPG home phone?

                  • +1

@Twix: No need for the old phone. Thanks for your replies by the way.

                    • +1

@ghoulie1: That makes it easier. nbn HFC NTD box is a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. nbn NTD box + GL.iNet Flint 2 router is all you need. Let me know if this works.

                      1. Remove the TP-Link Archer.
                      2. Wait 30 minutes.
                      3. Plugin your ethernet cable from the Flint 2 WAN to the nbn NTD box.
                      4. Login to the Flint 2 at 192.168.8.1
                      5. Set the WAN to PPPoE.
                      6. Type in ghoulie1@tpg.com.au or whatever your username is and password from TPG.
                      • @Twix: Thanks for this. Didn't work so I am using the old modem and can connect this router through that. Shame as the networking area is a bit of a mess! I appreciated your assistance.

                        • +1

@ghoulie1: TP-Link Archer + GL.iNet Flint 2 is a double NAT and can sometimes cause problems.

Do the same steps I mentioned and add a VLAN ID of 2.

Go to More Settings, Advanced to install the LuCI interface if it's not already installed.
                          Access LuCI via 192.168.8.1/cgi-bin/luci.

                          Navigate to Network, Interfaces.
Edit the existing WAN interface (usually named "WAN").
                          Protocol: Select PPPoE.
Credentials: Enter your username and password provided by TPG.
                          Physical Settings: Choose "Custom Interface".
Interface: Type in eth0.2 for TPG.
                          Save & Apply.
Reboot the router if the connection doesn't establish immediately.

Dump TPG if the LuCI details went over your head. Swap to a provider that uses DHCP (Leaptel, Superloop and Buddy Telco to name a few). This way it is much easier to setup and plugin the Flint 2 to the nbn NTD box.

                          • +1

@Twix: I'll try this later. Will stick with TPG for now until the September speed upgrades and then check for better deals and try this again. Thanks again @Twix!

                            • +1

@ghoulie1: All good. Follow these steps if you swap to Leaptel, Superloop or Buddy Telco.

                              1. Remove the TP-Link Archer.
                              2. Wait 30 minutes.
                              3. Factory reset the Flint 2.
                              4. Plugin your ethernet cable from the Flint 2 WAN to the nbn NTD box.
                              5. Login to the Flint 2 at 192.168.8.1
                              6. Set the WAN interface to DHCP.

You don't change any Flint settings if you change between these providers.

can get wifi 7 flint 3 machine on early bird offer for the same price
    https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-be9300/

    • That looks like a pretty sweet deal, no?
2.5G ports is huge on top of WiFi 7 and some decent software.

    • Seems like a much better deal

    • +2

      It's $159 USD / ~$245 AUD
Also, as already mentioned a few times, the Flint 3 could be considered a downgrade for many users.

  • +1

Can this handle 60+ IoT devices on 2.4Ghz, or should I just get another asus to mesh with my AX56U?
Currently using the EoL AC68U for all IoT devices which is mostly fine except for occasional need to reboot

    • 60+ is pretty big. What are you running?

      • Nothing fancy or exciting
Downlights, bulbs, plugs, sensors that go offline more often than not, streaming, etc
Apart from the sensors they’re generally stable with weekly Asus reboot, until the odd occasion everything goes bad and I have to power cycle the router

        • Fair enough, I went to zigbee for a heap of sensors to keep them off the wifi. It’s been working well and never seems to need a reboot.

  • Been using it for a month! Really great solid unit. Being an OpenWRT router, you can do more with this like setting up VLANs, multiple SSIDs etc.

  • Had the GL Marble, pathetic UI and had so many glitches when working as a repeater. Would rather buy an non openwrt router

  • Waiting for sub $150. Flint 3 release around the corner

    • -1

      It was already released dude

      • Pre order doesn't mean it's released.

Show me where I can buy it.

      • ????

    • Not sure that happens too soon. I got this for $177 6 weeks ago. I think this price area is pretty good. You're getting a LOT of hardware for the price.

  • +2

Stacks additively with Business prime, similar to https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/911139

    Came down to $108.78

  • How would this go against the TP-Link AX73 router?

  • +1

Was deciding between this and a 3… Ordered a flint 3 on early bird - hoping to see a jump from my 68u

  • I bought the TP Link AC1300 Mesh system a while ago but never got around to even opening it. Would it be compatible with this router to set up a Mesh system for the house?

  • can someone recommend a good BYO modem to go with this router?

    • Been running a Draytek Vigor 130

  • Would the Flint2 be a good purchase in my scenario?

HFC connection. NBN modem -> Flint2 -> Deco M5 mesh network.

Currently have 1 Deco m5 connected directly to the NBN modem and then two more M5 units acting as mesh.

Would getting the Flint2 in there as the main connection to my NBN modem increase the performance/efficiency of my set up?

    Thanks

    • +1

      NBN modem (HFC)

      Flint 2 (acts as router)

Deco M5 in Access Point (AP) mode

Other Deco M5 units (mesh nodes)

Keep in mind your Deco m5 units are still Wi-Fi 5, so wireless speeds won’t magically improve unless devices connect to Flint 2’s Wi-Fi directly. And Only supports up to 867 Mbps on 5GHz, which may bottleneck higher speed NBN plans (especially if you're on 100/20, 250/25 etc.)

You're okay with keeping Deco M5 as Wi-Fi mesh.
      - If your budget allows, consider gradually upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 mesh nodes down the track (like Deco X50 or X60).

  • Thanks OP.

Received this today. They included an odd PowerPoint adaptor where you have to install the prongs yourself. The adaptor turned out to be faulty, so I couldn’t get it to work. Sending it back tomorrow.
