    I blame the Cow Union.

    • -5

I'm pretty sure if they had a union their top priorities would be not having their children removed and killed, not being essentially sex slaves (if you have a better name for repeatedly inseminating them and pumping out their lactate then please advise), and not being killed and turned into hamburgers after about 4-5 pregnancies after which their daughters become more economically efficient sex slaves themselves - not the price of one of the things that was stolen from them with no recompense in the first place.

you must be fun at parties

        It's a dairy cow.

If you think that's bad, plants have it even worse. Billions of plants everyday are being buried in the ground against their will and then forced to endure blistering winds and scorching temperatures. They're not even given blankets or sunscreen to comfort them in these extreme conditions. They are left out in the open with no shelter for months on end before finally they are ripped out and massacred just so you can have your veggie burger.

Think that sounds stupid? That's how 90% of people see your comment.

          Plants have no feelings

@capslock: When I cut branches off trees, I can hear them screaming.
When I chop up veggies for dinner, I can hear them screaming.

Some humans buy pre cut or frozen veggies so they don't have to listen to the horror.

      • Wait til you hear about the chicken and egg industry.

Let the cows pay the cow tax!

  • +3

I wonder how much of the increase will go back to the farmer?

    • +14

the range is from NIL to ZERO - depends on the corporation

      • You'll probably find they will get shafted even more

Most of this is going into paying this guy's bonus….

  • Non dairy representing milk is gonna take over. It's getting to price parity now.

    • +3

Milk would have to get to like $20 a litre before I considered drinking fake milk

    • +2

Non dairy representing milk is gonna take over.

LOL. Might as well just drink water then…

    • I only drink soy "milk" on the odd occasion when it's on special. I enjoy the flavour in small doses. It does not replace my consumption of regular milk and never will.

A2 milk has gone up too…

    I blame the Farmer's Union !!!!

  • oh no, bubble tea prices will imminently go up too

    • @Taro Milk Tea can you confirm?

from what I have been told that we will gradually shift to using horse milk to cope with the increasing cost. Detail as per below:

        There are 3 stages:
1st stage - they will use combination 50% cows milk and 50% horse milk
        2nd stage - 25% cows milk 75% horse milk
Final stage - 100% horse milk

Each stage probably is around 3 months in duration..and they will also mix with some special powder to transform the horse milk's taste to mimic cows milk.

So…if you feel the taste of the milk tea you buy is a bit different, above is why.

I disclose too much, TMT out.

        • More like we will end up with Malk (Now with vitamin R).

  • Do people still buy the home brand milk?

    • +1

Yep. It's not the best, but you save a couple of dollars. I mostly have it in tea / coffee.

Maybe once a year I will splash out and buy the good stuff.

      • +2

I'd rather more of my money go to the farmers through things like Norco.

        • +2

I’d prefer my money to go on the mortgage. When that’s done, I’ll be more than happy to buy the good milk.

          • @Some Human: It's a dollar or two.

            • +1

@brendanm: It adds up over 10 years.

              • @Some Human: So does everything.

                • +1

@brendanm: I have ways of saving $2 on many things.

                  • @Some Human: No doubt. At what point do you just enjoy things though?

                    • +3

@brendanm: I enjoy many things, but spending an extra $2 on something I don't believe will add $2 of value to my life is not something I want to waste $2 on.
Everyone has different priorities. Mine is not being in debt til I'm 60.

                      • @Some Human: I'm not going to be in debt til I'm 60, and also buy Norco milk. Pretty good combo. Rather than spend less, you can make more.

    • +1

I don't trust home brand cows. I trust brand cows. Brand cows make better milk.

  • +2

    Drink Soy instead

    • -2

Or Almond, Oat, Rice, Coconut, etc.

There are lots of alternatives that are healthier for you, and they don't come from animals in pain and distress. If you care about sustainability and energy use then dairy should be right at the bottom of your list. Followed probably by Almond and Rice milks because of the excessive amount of water required.

  • May be it really is the time to be ditching the duopoly if you haven't already done so

heck pretty sure one day even coles/woolworths employee would be buying stuff from outside as their staff discount would not provide them with anything much better than buying outright without any discount from non duopoly places

local fruit & veg have veggies for like 50% of the price at woolworths/coles

I'd love to shop elsewhere, but choice is limited here in Tasmania. IGA stores (like just about everywhere else) are more expensive, same with some smaller chains like Hill Street or Salamanca Fresh, no Aldi stores anywhere in the state, so there's little competition for Coles and Woolworths. We live in rural Tassie and the nearest fruit and veg shop is over 30km away, and no cheaper (in fact, usually more expensive) than Coles/Woolworths. There's quite a few fruit and veg shops in the north of the state, but sadly lacking here in the south. Whilst we have some roadside stalls/shops where you can buy apples, cherries etc in season, for the most part the supermarket is your only option for fruit and veg. Farm Gate Market once a week in Hobart but that's a 80km+ round trip, so the cost of fuel well and truly cancels out any savings!

  • Wouldn't suggest people drink that much milk anyways. Small change vs hikes in mortgage rates.

  • Saw this last night, was pretty annoyed. Quite a big hike as well.

ABC reported this morning that 2 litres of milk in the US costs around AUD$12, so it could be worse for us in Australia

    • +2

      What? It's under $5 a gallon.

      • Well there you go

  • +2

Buy full cream milk, add lots of water to covert it into skim milk, then you can stretch out the supply.

  • Devondale 1ltr UHT Up from $1.60 to $1.90 this week

  • Norco went up a few weeks ago. $3.60 to $4.00 @ Coles and $4.10 @ Woolies for 2L

  • This will start tomorrow. My Coles has already changed the price on the shelf.

  • Cafes will have to increase coffee prices too I suppose.

  • Heard it on the radio this morning and sure enough prices up today. UHT $1.60 at Woolies in WA. Fresh 3L slightly cheaper per litre than 2L now too, used to be the same.

And Woolies said they were going to scrap the 10c levy end of June :/ Didn't see prices drop 10c though.

Even worse, my cheapo Woolies coffee beans out of stock everywhere, went to get the Aldi ones and they've hiked them 25% (but only 13.3% on the single origin ones). No doubt Woolies beans gonna be up when they are back in stock.
