  • Seems like alot of phone for not alot of price.

    Negatives?

    • +4

The CPU isn't flagship. Snapdragon 870 wasn't "Top of the range" at the point of release (the 888 was) and since then, theres been a Snapdragon 8 gen1 that's much faster.

Other than being marketed as a "Gaming phone", it's cousin the Poco F3 can be had for much cheaper ($350-400 depending if you want the 6/128 or 8/256 edition). The updated Poco F4 GT can be had for similar price to this Black shark with the newer and faster SD 8G1.

      • +1

True but some tests online lately have said that the sd870 gets better frame rates than the SD8G1 because of the poor heat dissipation and throttling of the SD8G1. Again, depends on specific phone and their cooling solutions. Same applies for the sd888.

On the price factor though yeah better specced phones out there for the same price.

        • Horses for courses. Cooling is varied depending on make/model and what you are doing with it - which admittedly, is the biggest selling point of the Black Shark. If you're Switch/Wii/GC emulating, then I have seen people gloat about higher frame rates on the 870 - only after tweaks / mods / custom firmwares. But still, you can do this on the Poco F3 which is around half the price of this, if you can find the right deals.

          • @bchliu: I have the F3 and wouldn't get anything that isn't sdg81+ purely because of the constant overheating mess that the sd888/SD8G1 was because of their reliance on Samsung and not TSMC as their foundry.

Wait for prices to come down and the next six months for sure.

            • @adrianhughes1998: Is the F3 worth getting right now if you need an upgrade?

              • @Ice009: Yeah cameras aren't the best but the screen and performance is worth it. At launch it wasn't because it was hardly hitting 120fps in the UI, rom optimisation was really poor. But since miui 12.5 enhanced edition its been fixed.

      • F4 GT looks crazy specs wise. I don't game so i think the trigger buttons would get annoying…

      • I need a new phone, but have never bought from overseas before. Not sure how warranty and all that works if buying from overseas either. Where do you get the Poco F3 from? I like the looks of it spec wise.

I've been looking at phones like the Samsung A52. I only want to spend about $350-$450 or so, though, so the F3 at the prices you listed would fit under that.

Usually most people here on OzB buying from overseas will go for Banggood or AliExpress and sometimes Amazon as a more trusted source. It does come with warranty, but it can be a bit painful to deal with especially if you have to claim and send back. That's why local stock stuff is much more expensive in comparison.

But if you are ok with it - the Poco F3 is running out in stock as it is replaced by the newer Poco F4 (SD870) and Poco F4 GT (SD888) which are around $6xx and $8xx respectively.

Banggood still has stock on the F3 here:
          https://www.banggood.com/POCO-F3-Global-Version-6_67-inch-12…

It will ship from Hong Kong warehouse, so expect it to take about 3-4 weeks to arrive.

As an alternative: if you want local stock from Amazon (which is much easier to return), then go for the Realme X3 Superzoom ($380) which is much better than the Samsung A52 here:
          https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B089XZH3Z9

        • Alternatively - looking at the posts here, go for the Black Shark 4 instead if you can up the budget to $579. At least it's from a bricks and mortar in Australia.

          • @bchliu: Thanks. Will have a look at that phone. Any idea how long you'd get updates for it?

I was given a link to this page https://trust.mi.com/psirt/updates/phone?tab=aerdata , but this phone isn't listed there.

            • @Ice009: You referring to the Poco F3? Not sure. That list you showed is something called "Android Enterprise Recommended" seal. Not sure if the F3 has been reviewed to comply with that. It's still a relatively new device, so should get at least two years of updates on it. There's also a lot of community support for it too in XDA if you are into that sort of thing.

              • @bchliu: Oh sorry, I should have mentioned, was referring to the Black Shark 4 in regard to updates.

Warning: this is not a Xiaomi Brand phone. You can think of it like an OEM brand. There are a lot of quality issue reports in the Chinese black shark forum. I would not buy even for $20.

    • +19

well. for 20 I will buy it for sure……

    • +1

Xiaomi is an OEM brand - they are marketers for smaller OEMs under their "trusted brand name". Same thing as Poco, Redmi etc. They are made in different factories by different companies, but just all labelled as "Xiaomi".

  • Got Black Shark 3 Pro and it had all the good things except for NFC. Even came with 500$ worth of accessories.

From then onwards they reduced the screen size which was a slight bummer. But I would choose the 5 Pro cause why not.

  • +10

Will this run Angry Birds at 120fps?
I refuse to play it at anything less due to motion sickness.

  • +4

JB still has Black Shark 4 with 12G RAM for $579

    • +1

they both use the SD870 🤔

      • Honestly, pretty much all the specs seem the same. Am I missing something?
This seems like a better option.

  • +1

It mentions it can do everything but make phone calls….. how times have changed

    • +1

What?! A mobile phone to make phone calls with? What an absurd idea. Whoever thought of such a preposterous thing?

      /s

    • It can do tiktok, not sure why you need anything else

  • +1

Does NFC on this phone actually work with Google Pay? For me it's a complete deal breaker if the touchless payments don't work.

  • Baby Shark?

    • +1

To to to do do do… baby shark.

  • Hi Op, have you seen any Oppo for sales atm?

  • I don't think BlackShark is a Xiaomi device. Xiaomi phones sell under the Xiaomi or the Poco brand.

Important to note that Xiaomi as an organisation doesn't only make their own goods. They basically resell smaller OEM companies products under their banner or a "Sub brand". That is why Xiaomi can sell multiple sub-brands of competing products. Black Shark is just like Redmi and Poco. Or the various electric scooters under the different sub brands.
