  • I remember Legion 7 5900HX+3080 got down to about 2.9k once?

This is basically 3080/ti laptop performance for around the same price, actually maybe even the better deal with the 6900HX, factor in the ddr5 tax and the 4k120hz (i forgot if its 100% p3 or 100% Adobe rgb) panel.

Dave2D can be easily be bought and have too much personal opinion.

Our fellow Aussie, Jarrod's Tech is much more objective and have much more data to back up his reviews.

      • -2

yeah Dave now only review about his tastes. Jarrod much more objective albeit boring sound voice tone but has deeper review

        • +5

Disagree with this. There's always quantitative data in his videos. Perhaps not as much data as Jarrod's Tech, but his videos are more compact too.

          • +1

@reloxation: You might say… his videos have a different standing.

      • +3

Can you provide an example of this? I've always found him to be quite credible, and I think his opinion aligns with a lot of tech enthusiasts.

        • +1

As you say, aligns with tech enthusiasts. So reviewing higher spec products is fine. But anything midspec for the average user may not be so good. After all, not everyone is looking for something to do video editing on.

          • @ATangk: Good point. Though just because his opinion aligns with tech enthusiasts doesn't mean he only reviews high spec products. A lot of tech enthusiasts are probably equally fascinated with the budget market and how it compares to spending top dollar.

      • +2

Dave does do a more short qualitative review compared to Jarrod’s hard quantitive benchmarks. He doesn’t show in depth benchmark figures but does summarise his results.
I wouldn’t say he’s “easily bought” as he knows good features and will put disclaimers for personal preferences (for example the CherryMX keys on the Alienware). But you may want a more in-depth review before taking the plunge

  • +3

    Dave2D's review seems very positive
In short, trades blows with the 3080 Ti (mobile), runs much cooler than Intel Configuration, 8 hours battery life under light load (incredible for a 17")

    • +3

      8hrs on a 4K 120hz screen wow, that's nuts.

  • +10

It would have been nice to get a 1440p display option. I feel 4K is overkill for a 17" and will make running future titles significantly harder to run

    • Agreed, I would've like if there was a 240hz QHD or a FHD 360hz option tbh

      • +2

Its not in AU but in the states they now have 480hz panel options. QHD 240hz panels only for 15 inch models right now.

        • +1

          wow 480hz that's insane

          • +1

@thesmartone1125: Impressive but honestly sounds gimmicky. I don’t think I notice any improvement above 240Hz

            • -1

@FireRunner: Yeah, no point having 480hz when the response time is 3ms.

              • @Heldnight: Without knowing whether that's a peak, average or max response time figure, and how that was measured, not sure you can make any judgement.

1000ms/480 = ~2.08 ms, so an average of 2.5ms-3ms (ie. rounded up to 3) is pretty decent for first gen tech on a laptop.

The tech can only be IPS or TN, and neither would have any issues with having a peak measurement below 2ms in the correct overdrive mode, so I'm pretty confident it's an average response time measurement.

        • It's been announced, not released.

Might be IPS, which was supposedly in the pipeline last year from at least LG and BOE, but could be TN.

      • +1

I set my monitor between 120, 144, 165 and could not notice much diffeerence. 60 to 120 was day and night.

    • +3

This is actually good, because 1080p resolution scales perfectly with 2160p screens. This means that pixels aren't partially utilised, causing a weird blurry effect such as when you run 1080p on a 1440p screen.

      • I guess maybe FSR might be able to help prevent blurry upscaling of a 1440p image too

    • I'm slow. Can't you just change the resolution to 2K?

      • +2

You can but then the image drops significantly in quality as a lower resolution image is upscaled to 4K. Because pixels don’t map properly it comes out blurry.
Though for a 1080p image 1 pixel maps exactly to 2x2 pixels at 4K which shouldn’t appear blurry.

        • No wonder 720p looks so bad on my 1440p monitor but looks good on the old TV!

          • +1

@FrozenFred: Yeah any upscaling (and often downscaling) can’t beat running at native. Though for a 720p on 1440p, it actually maps well with 1 pixel at 720p = 2x2 pixels at 1440p. Trying to upscale 1080p to 1440p results in 1 pixel mapping to 1.5x1.5 pixels which creates a blurry image

            • +1

@FireRunner: Great knowledge you have!! Yeah it's probably why running on any lower than native has always seemed worse on one screen but ok on another. But could never put my finger on if i was just trippin or not. So weird but makes me sense now!

    • It's best of both worlds since as harcle states 1080p scales perfectly you can use the desktop in 4K to take advantage of your 17" screen real estate without straining your eyes and then when gaming you can drop the res to 1080p and it won't be blurry.

    • Running 1440p on a 4k screen still looks really good
its nothing like runnning 1080p on a 1440p which looks shite.

  • finally alienware laptop ship a decent screen not the regular 1080p on a 17 inch

  • +1

Considering the specs and brand, $3000 ain't bad.

  • -5

    I think I'd rather a 1k workstation laptop, and then a 2k desktop 😂

But i spose if you got limited room, this could be the go but 17" laptop is huge.

  • +2

I have the 3070ti version. This thing is beefy and HUGE so keep that in mind. Love it though. However, mine is also exhibiting coil whine when gaming (think cicada during summer) and pending motherboard change. Hope everyone else gets one that doesn't have this issue. But Reddit seems to suggest that it's likely.

  • Thats a lot of hardware TBH! Would this reach 3070 Desktop performance on Raster?

    • Gaming wise definitely, whats Raster?

      • +3

Rasterization - NO DLSS, NO FSR, NO RT.

      • Can you please link your source that shows a 6850M XT reaching desktop 3070 performance?

        • +1

I dont have a solid source as I cant find any reviews with solid numbers for comparison.

However what I do know is that the its on par with a 3080ti laptop that (given full powered just like here) should net one 13.5k~14k score in timespy which is about what you can expect from a stock desktop 3070. With that said though, with desktop cards, depending on model etc there would be a lot more oc headroom than laptops.

    • The 6850M XT is basically a 6700 XT which is closer to a 3060 Ti than a 3070 on average. In some games it can beat a 3070 (Forza Horizon 5, AC Valhalla) mostly thanks to the better resizable bar support.

      • Ah OK, good to know. Thanks!

      • I think you are incorrect its closer to 3080

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLiuJKsvUik

        • +1

Depends on if you're talking about laptop or desktop variant GPUs. In laptop GPU terms, this does match the 3080/ti. However when comparing it to desktop GPUs, it's closer to a 3060ti/3070. I believe this particular chip may be a laptop-tweaked variant of the desktop 6750 XT.

  • should i get the FHD or UHD screen? its $100 difference

    • +2

I believe the FHD is only available with the 3070Ti

      • +2

Oh thank you..it does change the other specs automatically

  • expensive beast!

  • Is the deal still on? i clicked on the link and the price is back to the original price

    • Try apply the voucher codes at the checkout.

    • Just tried checkout with the voucher codes, it is working.

  • +2

I got the 3070Ti version, I wish I can buy this instead. I am a Linux guy, so not a big fan on Nvidia gpu. Just a note on the keyboard backlight, the symbol on the keycaps are not lit, a slight annoyance.

  • -1

if only i bought bitcoin 10 years ago (and sold them 3 years ago) - i can afford this

  • Just bought this
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/goto/713864
I don't game much so 3050 is ok for me I believe the Intel processor is faster than the Ryzen 9 6900HX. So good deal for $1078

    • +1

The 6900HX has better performance per watt compared to Intel 12th gen. It also runs a lot cooler. Hence if you look at the Dave2D, link further up, review of the laptop in this deal, it has almost 8hrs battery life for light tasks with a 4k screen compared to the Intel 12gen version, which lasts only 4hr. Dave also gets about 2hrs 42m in gaming, vs Intel with 1hr 17m. If you are going to have your laptop plugged in,12 gen is ok. Unfortunately, the MSI, in your link, only has 53wH battery isn't going to get much mileage.

      https://ibb.co/yVGGyr4

      • I am not sure battery life is as important on a huge 17inch desktop replacement laptop. I mean more is good but I dont think you will be taking it out of the house to work on it without a charger, be it intel or AMD.

        • Please show me one other 17" gaming laptop that lasts up to 8hrs on battery that is not AMD based. It also runs a lot cooler than the Intel version, based on Dave2D's feedback. Additionally, just because you believe that it is not essential, does not mean that it's a reflection of the whole market. It is just your opinion.

          • @shellshocked: I am not disputing the fact that its got good battery life, I am saying its too big and too clumsy to be used outside where you would need that sort of battery life.

    • +2

If it was a properly cooled chip, then yes the 12700H will perform better than 6900HX under ideal conditions.

But its not. The MSI Sword and other models under the GF/GL lineup have terrible build quality and thermal solutions to go, the 12700H will not sustain high wattage (intel only scales better than AMD past 45w or so) long enough to see it performing better than the 6900HX in proper workloads.

Its certainly not a bad deal given how cheap the machine is, but its not without downsides.

  • How does trs work it says it's up to $900 value you can bring back in so if the laptop is $1078 how does that work.

  • This seems like such a great deal.
Is it because there will be new CPUs soon?

  • +1

Dang.. great price. A shame I folded during the June EOFY sales and bought and X15 R2 with the i7/3070ti for about $600 more. It's still a beast of a laptop though and love it's small form factor but runs darned hot.

  • +2

Got one, thanks for posting this!

  • Can you also stack cashrewards cashback with this?

  • +1

Ordered one, applied discount code and cash back is around $182! So final price is around $2809, what a bargain! $2800 for a top tier alienware laptop with 4K screen is amazing. compared to ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 Gaming Notebook with only 3070ti and 1.5k screen but $4699 is a shocking price. thanks.

    • figured it out nvm

  • anyone got their order confirmed? Mine is sitting at order received for days.

    • Got the confirmed tick just before In production. Is that the same for you?

      • Nope seems like it’s stuck in “Your order has been received” I better give them a call

    • mine is in prodcution, better give them a call to find out whats happening.

  • is the code working for anyone else? Mine says "code cant be applied for items in your cart" :/
    Did I miss out?

  • Does anyone have an invoice they could PM me please?

    • Are you trying to get a price match somewhere? Let me know if you are successful, I’m missing out on the deal too, and eager to buy, thanks.

  • Did anyone get this laptop? On the fence here but 2900$ seems like a good deal. I cant find any solid review either - Dave raves about it without getting into details.

    • Yeah, I finally bought it 2 days ago after missing out on this deal. The price has gone down to $3360 this week without code and with 12% cashreward cashback brought it down roughly the same price as this deal.

      • Hey Jackfruit,

How do you find the laptop? I like the appeal of longer battery life, but do not want to lose too much in gaming performance.

        • Can’t comment on the laptop as I havent received it yet. But here are the pros that help me decide on finally getting this laptop:

          • I always want a 17”, higher resolution than fhd and high refresh rate is a must. I was waiting for Legion 5 pro or 7 gen 7, but they never seems to be on stock
          • Initially was aiming for at least Ryzen 7 and 3070, 2tb ssd and 32gb ram via self upgrade. With this laptop, I’m getting higher cpu and gpu, only needs to add another 1tb ssd (legion 5 pro deals mostly come with only 512gb, adding another ssd only net me 1.5tb)
          • Faster shipping time than Legion
          • Amd advantage/all Amd unit seems to run cooler than intel nvidia unit which is another plus I think, especially during summer months.
          • It’s only $4-500 on top on what I initially willing to spend on Legion
          • As for gaming performance it doesn’t really bother me much, I’m only a casual gamer and will use this laptop for some photo and video editing too, I believe the given spec is more than enough for my needs and will last me for many many years to come, which is also my consideration on buying a more premium laptop that can last (I know reliability issues is questionable with Alienware this days especially with this M series, I guess I just have to find out)

          Hope this helps.

          • @[Deactivated]: Thanks, mate, super useful. I have asked Dell if they can price match this promo. If they do it's a go for me.

I would opt in for their Alienware care - worth the price if anything breaks in the coverage period.

            • @fadz: All good mate.

I tried asking them via chat, the best they can do is $3180ish. If you are going to add after care service, i think it would be better off using cashrewards, you’ll get 12% back of all your spending. Mine was tracked by cashrewards within 10 minutes after I pay. But approval takes up 95 days, I’m confident it will be credited back as I don’t use any code.

              • @[Deactivated]: Do you have quote snap? the rep I talked to is not budging.

                • @fadz: No, sorry.

  • Anyone's order shipped without a tracking number? Says to wait at most 72 hours but it's been over a week for me with no tracking. Obviously contacting support but wondering if anyone else was in the same boat?

    • Same here, I think it has to do with them issuing laptops with wrong gpu, see below comments.

  • +1

Hey guys, just received the laptop, it came with 6800m! instead of 6850m… seems like this is a common issue with Dell. What do I do?

    • +2

Mine also came with 6800M (8th August) not 6850M XT. So I had to go through all the hassles to get them to make an arrangement to pick up the wrong laptop tomorrow. I couldn't believe that they make this kinda mistake often.

I had to do the below:

1)I called them to explain that their assembly team put the wrong graphics card (6800M-which is not even one of the options you can choose in the first place)

2)I provided the evidence that mine came out with 6800M not 6850M XT (screen shots from the specifications shown on Alienware app and device manager). These screenshots clearly show that the laptop I received came with 6800M not 6850M XT.

3)Their collection team contacted me (normally it takes about 24-48hours) to get the wrong laptop ready to be picked up by their team (they will come and pick it up tomorrow)

4)I explained to the CS guy that what exactly I want is to get the correct laptop with the correct graphics card (6850M XT) and components. But I am not sure about the exact procedure of when they send me a new laptop with the correct components. I reckon they need to pick up the wrong one first and start shipping a new one to me (I guess)

Hope this helps and please share your experience with us when you contact Dell to get this sorted out.

      • So have you guys received your replacements yet? I bought mine roughly 1 week after you guys, it’s been shipped out from dell factory on the 10th and I haven’t received tracking yet. I called them and was told there will be delay for mine.
Hopefully I receive one with correct gpu.

        • Not yet, Is there a massive difference between 6800m and 6850m xt? If they offer some sort of refund I’d take it.

          • @ContinuousCustomer: From what I can see, the only difference is boost clock speed and memory speed, the rest remain the same, I don’t know how much that will affect on usage, I’m not an expert here.

    • +1

Mine was initially reporting as a 6800m, but I did a bios update tonight and it is now showing as 6850m XT - HWinfo was showing 6850.

      • Thanks for the info. I did the same (luckily, the pick-up guy didn't come to pick up my laptop yesterday) and now it's showing as "RX 6850M XT". You may want to update the driver for the GPU so that the correct GPU gets reflected in both Alienware app (specs.) and Device manager.

I reckon they should've let us know about this in the first place.

      • Help me understand this, the bios update only change the name/description of the gpu but how can we be sure that this gpu is indeed a 6850m xt? Any third party app we can run to confirm this?

        • Yes you can run gpu-z but they all take that info from the same source.

You can test a few games yourself, and compare the results with benchmarks.

  • +1

Any of you guys getting a second ssd and thermal shield/heat sink for it?

    • Hi mate how has the experience been so far - I am not able to find a solid review (that wasn't promoted by an influencer) for the amd/amd combo. Battery life has mixed reviews and so has performance - Dave2d Raves about battery but other test sites have listed as it being very poor.
