Wife Wants $7000 Rangehood, What to Do?

Does anyone have experience with rangehoods?

Is there something that has similar airflow to the ILVE Majestic range that does not have the same cost? Wife went to a friend's house and saw how it performed and now wants one…

Airflow is 1200 m3/hr

…. Ozbargainers help me! I seriously have no idea.

  • Either Sirius or Schweigen like many have said. homeclearance do have specials on these, but generally wont come with the motor. So do your maths.

  • Is the real reason how it performs or how much was spent to get it….
If its the latter, finding an "equivalent" model won't solve your problem

What's she cooking that requires that amount of airflow? Meth?

  • I have a similar one like this below. in operation since 2014, can't complain. Extracts anything any spice even in low setting. Do not spend too much on this. it's just a fan inside. All I do is clean filters using a supercheap degreaser once in 3-6 months.

  • The most important fact: does she cook at all?

    • Need a sick rangehood for the morning toast

Fotile if you're looking for some quiet rangehoods

If $7k is too much money to pay for a rangehood relative to your income and net worth, you must have an honest discussion with your wife about why you think it is a poor use of your collective funds.

A good way to approach it is to show her other, better uses of the funds - investment, holidays, eating out, maybe even other material goods that can bring much more enjoyment than a rangehood. Another trick is to show her a calculation of how many hours of work it takes to earn $7k after tax.

Most importantly, try to remain calm, non-accusatory and open to listening to her motivations for wanting the range hood so she doesn't feel as though you are attacking her.

    Good luck mate.

Finally an actual reply after reading a page full of hurr durr divorce her

If $7k is too much money to pay for a rangehood relative to your income and net worth

Nope, nothing to do with money. Everything to do with real needs.
If she cooks night and day and in-between then it is justified.

Otherwise no, regardless if $7K is a lot or almost nothing.

      • +1

I mean, I would expect a reasonable discussion around this and the need for a 7k rangehood.

That said, if she really wants a 7k rangehood (due to aesthetics or whatever) and they can afford it - I genuinely don't see the appropriateness of the husband actually flat out declining. This is the spouse, not a child.

It really does have a lot to do with money unless they are quite rich. What if $7k is a years worth of savings for them and can be spent in an area that will improve their life more than a $7k rangehood that is a bit better than a $500 rangehood?

All manufactured goods have a sweet spot of functionality vs cost with rapidly diminishing returns as you go up the cost scale. There are many people cooking great food all the time with normal rangehoods, a $7k one is a want, not a need.

That being said, hopefully OP is not being a hypocrite and spending extravagantly on his own interests.

      Solid reply
Ozbargain needs more people like you

      • Thanks mate.

  • We have a Qasair Foldaway twin motor, https://www.winnings.com.au/p/qasair-90cm-foldaway-executive…

We got this because we wanted it to actually extract properly, and I don't really like the look of rangehoods - this is basically invisible in a row of cabinets.

About 3k (plus cost for a panel to match the cabinetry). 1800m3/hr

Rangehoods are often overlooked in the house. Remember it will get used every day - several times.
If its place you will spend time in, 7k for a fixed investment isn't much.

I have an older ILVE - 8 years old and its been amazing in both performance and service
Warranty was 5 years. But one of the motors (twin motors) failed on the 6th year. They came and replaced it free of charge.
Every thing else is going strong and we use it, alot. Especially in a fragrant / oily Asian cooking environment. It hasnt failed a beat.

    • Mate, for 7k I would expect a 10year warranty. My personal opinion of course.

  • Its okay, happens sometimes. Don't lose hope, try giving her your manhood, may help!

  • Do they make reliable appliances in Italy? Get a German made Gaggenau instead.

  • Buy a 7 grand OLED and call it even

  • I have a QASAIR rangehood that came with the house, pretty happy with it.
    Here's one from a random google: 1800m3/hr. $2636.
    https://www.winnings.com.au/p/qasair-90cm-3-flare-federation…

  • What's that? Can you eat it or clean with it? If you can't you don't need it

  • looks like you need a new wife

  • Jesus! For the prices this mob are charging, can't they get a better website host? Pages take forever to load!

  • If your wife is going to blow $7k either way, give her an alternative.

$7k channel hand bag or the range hood.

I bet she'll go for the bag.

    • Also, have you considered installing a 300$ 1200m3/hr blower fan that will do the exact same job and be quieter because its installed inline with the ducting?

  • Well, it looks like we are getting a ILVE cooktop with it too.

    Happy Wife, Happy Life.

'Well, it looks like we are getting a ILVE cooktop with it too. Happy Wife, Happy Life'

sounds like the husband has no ownership of this decision

let's hope his future is happy, and not just his wife's …

      😞😫😩😳😞😖😏😒🤨💀😔🥺😣🤕🤨

How does your wife’s boyfriend feel about this? Maybe he can talk some more sense into her.

    • ILVE cooktops look nice, French elegance for 1/100 of the price of a real French cooktop (i.e. La Cornue cooktops for up to $500,000)

  • Man that sucks.

  • +1

Show her the California Prop 65 Warning that companies like to stick onto things https://twitter.com/dangraur/status/785860795355787265 Then explain that the $7,000 Range Hood can cause cancer

  • Go on appliances online and there is a function for extraction rate.

    https://www.appliancesonline.com.au/product/elica-vida-90cm-…

    This is $1100 and 1260m3

Look into your own hobby and find out what $7000 buys you in that, and see if she agrees to whatever you want to buy.

Play golf? Ask if it's alright if you buy a $7000 golf set.

  • To put things into perspective, it's a steel tube with a fan and a couple of lights inside. Yes that brand might look cool but you are paying a premium for the brand name and because it's been imported from Italy. (Don't forget the store also adds a 30-50% mark up)

If she simply wants a cool feature in your kitchen, there are other things you could do instead that could be cheaper.

That said, happy wife, happy life?

  • -1

Does wife have job? If so she can pay for it herself.

7k is ridiculous price for a range hood

  • +2

She better perform better than the range hood after it's all installed and done

  • Set up a home cooking business and write off the rangehood with depreciation expense

  • just do it if you can afford it. happy wife, happy life.

  • If you decided to post on Ozbargain for random peoples opinion/suggestions, rather than discuss it with the wife… I think you've got bigger issues than a rangehood lol

Ps: "happy wife happy life" is a lie and will eventually lead to unhappiness, inequality and separation. Better off being realistic and discussing things openly.

    • when a new want leads to a bigger want and so on, draining your wallet at the same time :P

      • Exactly.

My wife and I buy things for each other. But if one of us wants something specific then we generally just buy it ourselves. Makes things easy.

  • isn't this the thing above the cooktop?

    • +1

That is generally what a rangehood is.

      • so basically a small motor with fan for $7000 ? :O

        • Dat labour be pricey yo.

  • +1

We are currently living through a period of inflation where no one wants to buy lettuce or broccoli, with talk of recession on the horizon. I think you got better things to buy for $7000. You can make do with whatever you currently have or a $1500 new one.

  • +2

Ask your wife is she's happy spending $14000 on a rangehood, because your mistress will want one too…

  • We need to see the specs.
What exactly it sucks and how good it does it really matters before we can help you.

    • I suspect OP won’t post a picture of his wife.

  • I'd look for a different model

  • +1

Tell her that her that you can't justify spending that amount of money for a rangehood, because her cooking skills is just "ok".

    • +1

      This is just genius!

I'll add to that and say, to soften the blow… Just offer some cooking classes first and if she gets better, THEN discuss the rangehood.

  • If she’s going to spend most of her time in the kitchen making delicious meals for you then it’s pretty good deal

  • Start leaving Motorbike brochures and magazines around the house.

  • Can she sell one of her Chanel handbags to help fund it?

Tell her she can keep the Hermes birkin. We all know that's an investment.

  • So she wants this rangehood?

    https://ilve.com.au/p/am120/

That is a shit rangehood. If you want an expensive rangehood. Get a qasair. If you want something decent but cheaper, get a whispair.

    • indeed it is shit! your paying premium for a fake badge on a very cheap rangehood system made by a cheap company.

ILVE is nice for ovens/cooktop, but seriously go get a QasAir system for 1/3 the price and it will b 100x better.

  • +1

ILVE do not make rangehoods, by that I mean they don't specialise in them.

Whatever it is for $7,000 cannot be better than a company that specialises in rangehood systems - go check out QasAir Rangehoods.
