"lock mechanism supported by black plastic"

Hehehe, came to do the same.

Whilst I really enjoy LPL, I think you'll find not many bike/scooters stolen by picking locks. It's a bit hard to do in the open & it's fairly obvious.

If he'd tapped it with a hammer, or opened it with a screwdriver, yeah I'd be concerned.

It's a bit hard to do in the open & it's fairly obvious.

You'd be surprised how brazen the thieves can be. To most passers-by who won't be paying close attention, the lock picking just looks like someone trying to open the lock with a key.

        • The easiest place to hide is out in the open.

      • Seems more likely they'll use a tiny band saw to saw through it than pick the lock, as you said, it's amazing how often people just leave alone someone clearly sawing through steel.

Ta! It's probably crap, but it's a deterrent compared to the other crap that's around.

      probably crap

      it is crap

Does anyone know why I wouldn't have been alerted to the lighting deal by Amazon? This was in my Wishlist and also in my cart, and neither triggered a notification. I want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong, as I'd like to be alerted to price reductions on Wishlist items going forward.

mmmm get a better lock. they last forever, and can be resold second hand easily.

    • +1

yes, don't support buying this landfill

    • Which one would you recommend?

whatcha locking up? and how expensive is your bike/scooter/skateboard?

Are you carrying it by hand/backpack/bicycle pannier/attached on bike frame?

I've got several ranging from least secure to more secure and switch between them based on needs but if weight/size is no concern, this is solid https://g.co/kgs/JG7UEc - it is 7.5x more expensive than this amazon lock, but you can resell it for most of its original value at the end of the day, or try to get a second hand one. Note theres a regular and XL version of this lock.

I also really like this lock but it looks like it's been discontinued https://mobil.abus.com/uk/on-road/Locks/U-Shackle-Locks/U-Sh… was cheaper at around $80-$90 at the time of purchase.

end of the day if you get something in these articles or use the one that the lockpickinglawyer uses (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpVOTEOMRuE), you can't go too wrong.

whatever you do, avoid cheap flimsy cable lock unless its for the 2 mins run-in-and-out scenarios - those things litterally take 3 seconds to cut open.

you're suggesting to spend in some cases as much as what some members may spend on the bike itself, on a lock

and important factor is the use case, if you're just using it to hold in place while you are in a cafe then i'd say this one works perfectly fine

if you're commuting and leaving it parked up on the street or overnight then it may make more sense to get a better lock but neither of the two you mentioned feature any sort of protection for your ancillary bits and pieces, ie both wheels or helmet etc

for the purposes of stopping that teenager running off with your bike i think this more than suffices

          • @peter05: reminds me why I ended up justifying getting a Brompton for commuting, after the costs of additional equipment piled up and ongoing insurance costs due to the fear of my last bike being stolen anyway, I just decided I'm just going to hold that sucker in my cold dead hands while I have my coffee.

Of course this doesn't apply for everyone, nothing can replace the need for a full-sized bike. if your bike is very special/one-of-a-kind, and has to go through some sketch areas, insurance may be worth the peace of mind.

  • The bike lock with thickness(including rubber casing):14mm,

Very misleading claim :-( So really 10mm shackle?
Meh, $20, not all my bikes are worth a fancy lock and this beats a cable.

    • 12.8mm I think LPL suggested.

But he was worried about some plastic inside the locking mechanism. It might have been fixed since then though - I heard there was a revision about a year ago.

  • Ozito battery angle grinder 15 seconds and bikes gone
