[VIC] $29 Cat and Kitten Adoption @ RSPCA Victoria

1510

RSPCA Victoria, along with participating Petbarn stores, will reduce the adoption price of cats and kittens to just $29 as part of its ‘CatPacity’ adoption promotion this weekend (30-31 July).

RSPCA Victoria is urgently looking for loving furever homes for as many cats and kittens as possible to make way for incoming animals who also require care and rehoming. RSPCA Victoria shelters are currently caring for 675 cats and kittens, up from 405 cats and kittens at the same time last year.

We urge anyone considering cat adoption to make the most of the CatPacity promotion and visit the website to view the cats who are ready to find a new home.

All cats and kittens come microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, and behaviour and health checked. While walk-in appointments are welcome, they are subject to availability, so people are encouraged to make an appointment online.

Poor kittens/cats- hopefully some families will adopt them soon

      • +35

        And eaten. Yummy!

        • +10

          Yes?

      • -3

If you love animals so much stop eating their food.

        • +2

The animals you eat consume 10 times the food I consume.

  • +17

    ADOBT DONT SHOP

    • +19

      Meowth, that's right!

    • -1

      Adobe?

  • +2

    I'm gonna broden this

  • +1

    That’s awesome…
Curious, do they do deals like this for dogs and puppies?

    • +26

Are you going to neg electronic deals because someone might lick the batteries? I suggest negging any vehicle deals in case people crash and also nagging lego in case people swallow the bricks too

      • -3

No, the batteries and vehicles and lego won't care when you're done with them.

      • No I neg lego because they are an expensive improvised version of caltrops all over unsuspecting peoples floors.

    • +3

I'm not sure "people don't like what they buy" falls into the negging guidelines lol. You have "an issue with the seller" that a shelter homes animals at a cheap price? That doesn't seem right either.

    • +10

Do you have any alternative programs to suggest to the RSPCA for increasing the rate of adoption to help combat overcrowding and the possible increase in euthanasia?

These animals are not always new kittens/pups and these incentives can produce higher successful adoptions of older pets.

You are not wrong in the opinion of trivialising this program as a 'deal' but the awareness combined with the fact that the RSPCA has been running these campaigns for years may indicate the result being more 'positive' than 'negative'

      MEOW!

      • +3

        increasing the rate of adoption

Perhaps consider the alternative of reducing the rate of production. Take no part in, and campaign against breeding pets and the problem will eventually disappear.

        • Take no part in, and campaign against breeding pets and the problem will eventually disappear.

And the animals currently in RSPCA shelter? Are you expecting them to also "eventually disappear"?

          • @OZKap: Take extant animals. With reduced demand they will eventually disappear. It won't happen overnight.

Treat extant animals with dignity by taking care of them.

Treat future animals with dignity by not breeding them into existence in the first place.

        • +2

Well adoptions are nearly always(if not always) desexed when they hit the shelter….. https://www.rspca.org.au/campaigns/responsible-pet-ownership… This page even states the goal being to reduce the rate of production!

"The RSPCA practices early age desexing from the age of eight weeks, when the surgery is simple and the recovery is rapid. This ensures cats and dogs cannot produce any unwanted/unplanned litters, reducing the number of unwanted companion animals in the community and thus the number of animals entering shelters and pounds. This will in turn help to reduce high euthanasia rates."

So they do try to tackle part of that issue within the RSPCA's own adoption system.

If you mean society as a whole…… well that's a whole different ball game unfortunately :(

        • +1

You do realise that the vast majority of cats and kittens that end up at the RSPCA aren't "bred" by anyone except themselves? There's a reason why they're almost all domestic breed cats. Or are you hoping that ferals and pets will watch your ad campaign and practice abstinence?

I mean, I'm all for an aggressive campaign promoting desexing - but that won't stop cats from ending up at the RSPCA given the literal millions of feral cats in Australia - and acting like the solution is to discourage breeders is completely naive.

This is so good, hope they can all find a warm, loving home ♥️

  • Website cookies and tracking is a little OTT.

  • +16

Note - this includes everything like desexing, microchipping, vaccinations, and usually even litter and food.

Please consider adopting, there’s literally no reason not to over buying a cat, even if someone is giving it to you for FREE. It’s cheaper with RSCPA.

    • +1

Excellent point. I recently rescued a kitty after his owner died. He is adorable and I don't regret it at all however with vet checks, microchipping and vaccination there wasn't much change left from $300

  • +10

I hope the release of Stray on PS5 has encouraged more folk to get a cat 😊😸

  • -6

Not if they pay me $29

  • +3

Cats are a very versatile animal. A mere $29 investment can pay dividends in the long run.

    • When it start scratching your sofa and blinds, it becomes a liability.

      • kmart rope scratching posts are great and cheap enough to put a few down but we only needed one

  • +11

Took on a pregnant stray cat during the winter period of 2020. One of the best decision of my life. Brings happiness to our lives each and everyday. This is a fantastic deal as the cost of the desex, microchip and vaccination cost us a few hundred dollars. Please don't buy a cat/kitten from a breeder. Give the chance of a new life to a stray.

    • +1

But firstly, lets deport you outta Straya.

    • +2

I like to think of my relationship with my cats as more of an equal partnership anyway

    • 'Cats should be banned as pets in Australia'

      upvotes deal anyway

  • +1

Just fyi, i took up on this offer in Feb 2019 and was so close to adopting a cat but then was not allowed because the cat had mental issues and will require a home that already had another cat…

RSPCA then gave me a raincheck on the voucher on a printed voucher with expiry date at the end of march.

I eventually adopted a 6 month old kitten for the same $29 fee, a month after the original deal expired…

Just saying that they may have this offer if you can't find what you want as long as you still make an effort of visiting them…

  • -4

If it's adoption, why are they selling it. Shouldn't it be free

  • +4

Even if you ignore the un-appreciated value of owning a cat (biscuit massages, heater for your lap or shoulders), desexing and vaccinations alone are worth $150+.

Vaccinations also reduces risk of cancers, and getting these off the streets is better for everyone and the environment. What a bargain.

  • +2

Just a word of caution from a parent of 2 cats… try choosing one that doesn't shed much hair, otherwise, you will find cat hair in each and everything in your house.

    • +1

Or. You could use a cat brush regularly. My cat used to leave hair everywhere until I started brushing her regularly. Plus she loves the feeling of the brush which is a bonus

      • I brush my cats regularly, but only one of them sheds hair. The other is fine. Both are of different breeds.

        • +1

All the breeds I've come across shed hair, it's just harder to see on different colours (couch, clothes, etc). I recommend a few different lint rollers/brushes in the house, a strong vacuum & a lint remover for the couches, like the one below:
          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/144438408714?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

As for the bedding, synthetic silk is the easiest to clean for cat furr. Combine with an air purifier if you have allergies (YMMV)

          • +1

            @Tuftsdude:

I have also learnt that a rubber glove is also quite helpful for removing hair/fur from clothes.

            • @RSmith: I'll give it a try, should have a lifetime supply of rubber gloves arriving after the recent Durex deals..

  • -7

Why would anyone want a cat? Guess if you like scratches on your furniture and fur all over your house. As well as the risk of getting clawed in the face. Declaw all cats in Australia.

Dogs are clearly superior, especially Pits.

    • +7

Piss off. No wonder a cat would claw you in the face. I've only ever accidentally been scratched in the face by a cat. Unless you Provoke them they don't attack. Fair enough on the couch and hair stuff. But regularly brushing should help and get plenty of alternatives for scratching so they avoid the couch.

    • +5

I'd rather an animal that isn't capable of mauling a 2yr old child but hey each to their own.

    • +1

      username checks out?

    • +1

      "Declaw all cats in Australia.
Dogs are clearly superior, especially Pits."

Fair enough.. But the new rules should also include Pit bull owners now can't be Motorbike loving, tattooed, pet snake owners who only get Pit bulls because they want to look tough for their toothless bogan mates..

    • come on folks this is F tier bait

      its obvious
