Sold by Thunder Japan, fulfilled by Amazon.
Supposed to be a step above your average Gasmate/Campmaster stoves you can get for $25.

Is it 4x better? I hope to find out tomorrow.

It's imported from Japan so no English instructions.

https://www.iwatani.com/eco-premium

10000 btu, but adverstised to burn more like a 12000 btu burner due to it's design. Supposedly also more efficient than cheaper stoves with its Heat Panel system.

For reference the Kmart Campmaster is 8000 btu and $24.

Has been floating around the $120+ mark for some time but dropped to a price I was willing to try it at.

  • Do cartridges still explode in butanes? I saw news people eating at a round table, a butane in the center then it exploded. I am hesitant to try those until now.

    • +3

Nah, I think all butane cans have safety vents these days.. (Even with the old style cans you had to be doing something fairly stupid for them to "go off")..

This stove seems very overpriced.. it looks cool in the pics but it wont cook any better than a $25 Bunnings or SCA one…

  • +7

I have an Iwatani unit bought in Japan and can definitely vouch for the quality. The local ones at Bunnings don't come close.

Is it 4 times better? Depends what you're cooking :)

    • Likewise, we always had the cheap ones from bunnings/big W. Partner cooks a lot of hotpot and hence has a higher quality one, hard to go back now. Well worth if its used fairly often IMO

    • Im tempted, it does look pretty cool.

In your opinion what are the advantages over the kmart/bunnings ones?
Are there other improvements beyond the BTU increase that you have experienced?

      • +1

Depends what you want it for, their build quality surpasses Bunnings and etc.

12000 BTU is pretty high good for home Wok cooking, obviously more BTU would be preferred. But it does the job your stir fry just takes a bit longer.

        • Thoughts on cooking steak on a cast iron on this?

I tried doing sausages with the Bunnings one and it took forever as the heat wasn't hot enough.

          • +1

@emjk: It should be ok, unsure though as I’ve purchased them for the sole purpose of using the wok and occasional camp cooking.

        • Any of them are way better than cooking on the standard electric hot plates.

      • +2

Build quality, much more solid (Bunnings ones are very flimsy). Temperature (heat) is a lot more, beneficial when you're having teppanyaki and the like.

    • How did you get your stove back from Japan? I tried once and they had to take it out of my check in luggage.

      • +3

I brought one of these ones back from Japan. It was much cheaper than its current price on Amazon. At 4.1 kW (about 14,000 BTU) it’s pretty decent for wok cooking.

To take it on the plane I removed the gas canister before putting in my checked luggage. It was flagged in the baggage screening and I had to take it out to show a member of ground staff. They were satisfied when I explained that I had removed the gas canister. But I speak Japanese, which made it easy. YMMV

        • That's exactly what I have.

      • Just in my luggage…this is going back almost 10+ years ago - didn't have an issue then.

  • +3

Been waiting for these to drop in price:
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Iwatani-Fired-Burning-ABURIYA-CB-A…

  • That's a lot, definitely not 4x better. Wouldn't you put the same butane canisters in? Looks nice though. Just got one from years ago from a Korean supermarket or something.

  • Does it come with a case?

    • amashun is correct. I received the order and confirm it does NOT come with case. I am going to return it now.

      • That's useless, the one I've had forv over 12y from a Korean supermarket has a hard plastic case that folds open with clips. You'd want that for the price of these. Maybe go check out the shops.
Could just be a case of pay more get less these days although the Kmart ones include a case.

Fair few one star reviews on Amazon regarding the build quality or defects.

  • Do people use these inside with no exhaust fans?

    • +6

People have been cooking indoors with gas for a long time. Is there a difference?

      • +1

Indoor gas cookers have exhaust hoods. Plenty of evidence that cooking without an exhaust damages your health. Literally releases toxic gas such as NO2 and CO. All cooking generates pm2.5 particulates - gas cooking emits twice as much as electric. That's why Korean restaurants have extraction vents above each table…

        • That's why Korean restaurants have extraction vents above each table…

Are you sure that's not only for the indoor BBQ restaurants where they try to get the smoke and smell exhausted as soon as possible so customers don't leave with strong odour on their clothing.

          • @davidl820: In S Korea? I didn't see any bbq restaurants without it. Either way, the release of CO and NO2 from gas cookers is well documented. Knock yourself out if you're happy inhaling that stuff. There's no law prohibiting it.

          • @davidl820: Korean BBQ restaurant with charcoal grill has exhaust vents on each table to prevent toxic gas.

        • Not every house with a gas stove has an exhaust fan…

          • @MonkDog: Sure and unflued gas heaters still exist in some Australian schools. I wouldn't want any of my family and friends anywhere near them and their negative impacting health effects. But each their own.

        • Just put it on top of the stove and could turn the exhaust fan on, or open windows and or use side. On very low heat it World be ok

    • +1

      Just open doors / windows

      • Nah, I don't need to use them indoors. Just surprised that some do, given all the literature around gas use inside.

  • +1

We use ours for camping. So the standard ones are fine. This would get beat up pretty quick. Also great to have a flame collar when cooking in the outdoors which I note this one doesn't have. So it's obviously designed for a different purpose. The heat on the standard ones is also more than enough. We are often trying to turn ours down!

    • It may be eco I assume if it goes very low flame, not sure. Most wouldn't take these camping but for indoor Korean BBQ etc I'd say.

  • +5

Been using this for the last few years
Build is much better than Kmart or buntings
And looks very sleek on the table when you have visitor
I find cooking hotpot boil faster than those kmart and buntings
Or maybe just me. We cook hotpot at least once every week.
Not suitable for camping or outdoor as it does not have flame collar
So when their is wind, the flame might be off
Mine does not comes with the box and had exact same model as this from Amazon as well
Comes in a carton box only, so been keeping it on the same carton until now
I paid around $80 back then shipped from Japan by Amazon au

  • Looks like B stock from comment. Real Iwatani products are good. Better buy from China or Japan directly as the factories are there. And the price is much less than this. At this price you should get the 4.1KW top notch model. Bad seller selling bad products at a super high price makes me feel uncomfortable.

    • any recommendation for a 4.1kw model? I have the bunnings one but it is not that good for Korean BBQ…

    • Iwantani always has factory in China.

      I have a ZM-1M and it's from there.

  • +1

I have been on the lookout for one of these but some of the reviews of this are dodgy. I was looking into the Korean made Techef.
I prepared to pay for a good quality powerful portable stove with an awesome hotplate to commence my Korean BBQ adventures.

  • I got one of made in South Korea one @$10, pretty good.

other one from Kmart more than 10 years ago @$15.

This kind of stove con is butane gas not gaslized well at low temperature.

    • The heat plate is supposed to keep the canister at a good temperature to keep pumping out all of it's gas to avoid this problem.

  • I have the orange/copper coloured version of this, amazing!

Also don't forget to the buy the flat plate so you can make Korean BBQ

  • As used in Yakiniku (DIY BBQ) restaurants all over Japan .. 💖 .. !!

Not every house with a gas stove has an exhaust fan…

Well IMHO you'd be stupid not have one….I've cooked on Gas stovetops all my life and always ensure there's exhaust fans above the stove..

    • and make sure it is well ventilated when cooking

  • I remembering watching a NHK documentary many years ago, stating that Iwatani were one of the innovators or at least, first pioneers of the portable gas stove as we know it today.

Anywho, my dad got an Iwatani in the early 80s (potentially before I was born?) and it's still going strong!

    • Plenty of older Hilux’s getting around also 😀😉

  • I moved away from these years ago due to working very poorly at higher altitudes and cooler weather in The High County…
