HP Pavilion 800 Wireless Keyboard and Mouse in White or Black is available at the following retailers for $48

RRP is listed as $100 on HP, but this Keyboard usually sells for around $89.

I've been looking for a decent White non Bluetooth slim keyboard mouse combo for a while, I have seen this at Officeworks and it felt good, but wasn't ready to pay $89 back when I first saw it. Although $48 for it I think is good value, so grabbed one.

One of the negatives people have reported for this keyboard is the inability to lock Fn keys to function as F1-F12 instead of media keys. However, you can use a key mapper (e.g: Microsoft Power Toys or any one of the dozen or so 3rd party apps out there) to permanently map the top row to function as F keys. Although if you do that, switching back to media/search keys is not as easy as pressing the Fn key. I don't use the media keys, so mapping them is not an issue for me, but something to be mindful of if you regularly use both Function and media keys.

  • Tempted to get it. Seen those keyboards before and they're nice.

Alternative to Microsoft powertoys for key mapping is autohotkey

  • These don't have bluetooth capabilities right? There's a question and answer on the Amazon post that says it's bluetooth, but I can't see it in the specs.

    • +1

      not that i can see..

    • +1

No, this is not Bluetooth. I wouldn’t have bought it if it was BT :)

      • Just wondering is there any advantage of a wireless over a bluetooth keyboard? Or does it just depend whether your computer has bluetooth capabilities already?

        • +4

          bluetooth keyboards CONS:
          1. don't work before windows starts. ie. can't enter BIOS
          2. use more battery
          3. less reliable as it requires your OS bluetooth to work perfectly

          bluetooth keyboard PROS:
          1. no extra dongle to break/lose

          • @thepigs: Thanks for the clarification :)

          • +2

@thepigs: Yep, and on top of all the cons mentioned above, the main reason I’m looking to replace my Microsoft surface BT keyboard is because I want a USB receiver that I can connect to my dock so whenever I switch between my work and personal laptop, I don’t have to reconnect the mouse and keyboard via BT settings.

@opt: Never realised that you couldn't use a bluetooth keyboard when in the Bios. Now it all makes sense. Learn something new every day :)

  • Something I can critique as I have been looking for a keyboard too and have been researching. Bluetooth technology has grown significantly that if you'd compare mice out there, there are bluetooth mice that last 12 months, 24 months which is better or on par with non-Bluetooth. It saves you a USB port and if you lose the tiny receiver then you're done. For me, I'd prefer a Bluetooth keyboard. This HP device won't even mention the battery life. Plus this device isn't on the recommended list from reviewers.

    • I don’t think losing a USB port or even the receiver is a huge concern for the majority of the target market looking for a full-size keyboard and a mouse, because how many travel with a full size keyboard and a mouse? Most of the people buying this will probably keep it on a desk connected to a PC or a notebook with a dock or a USB hub.

But I agree BT is more convenient for traveling, which is why I use an MX anywhere BT mouse for that. But BT IMHO is not as reliable as regular wireless keyboard that use a USB receiver for daily use. I have a surface book 2 and a surface BT keyboard which you’d think work well right ? But NO , and its not just me see how long that thread is. Shows how finicky BT is when even Microsoft can’t get it right on their own hardware and OS.

      • That's interesting. I don't know what the situation with the Surface is but it does look long. If HP releases information on battery life then I'd be more interested in it. If the battery life is good, then HP would brag about it. I'm eyeing on the Logitech K series esp K380. I like how this lets you use on android devices too

  • Just got mine delivered, the design and feel is surprisingly close to my Surface keyboard and mouse which costs 4 times as much ! I think its made out of plastic because it flexes more than my aluminum surface keyboard, but not by much, definitely feels a lot more premium than a your typical $50 Logitech or Microsoft keyboard mouse combo.

    • How's the F1-F12 keys? Do you have to use the Fn key to use the F keys normally instead of the default multimedia functions?

      • +1

Unfortunately it defaults to media functions as some people have already indicated, have to press Fn to activate F1-F12, I haven't figured out a way to lock it either, will try googling more tomorrow and post if I find anything, otherwise I'll just remap the media keys.

        • Can you change the settings in Bios similar to this link with the HP Pavilion 600? Link

  • I have this. Good price for a combo. Am looking for a replacement as one of the F keys snapped off and it’s a bit of an eyesore having a missing key.

Have the MX Keys for home and would like to find something similar but definitely not in that price range. Any suggestions? (I have set an alert for K780)
