Wew. Can only assume this is in response to ALDI's upcoming grinder special buy

      Thank you again Aldi.

ryobi one seems to have better specs

    • +1

atleast comparing ryobi to other named brands (makita, dewalt, milwaukee, etc) Ryobi always tends to have better specs for the same price….where ryobi tends to suffer is build quality and longevity. however i'm curious to see which is better when comparing aldi "Bench grinder" with the ryobi equivalent

This video shows shows what you can expect from Ryobi's 370W. Video is for belt and disc grinder (not same as this OzB post). Check youtube link comments - lots of people are satisfied with what it can do, totally inline with the price ($90 is still a bargain methinks).

Useful little machine. I bought one a while back but my bunnings never has the sandpaper belts for it though (looks like some other bunnings might have a similar issue), so can be a bit annoying if I don't have some spare.

I've had one for a few years, its ok. Fine for small jobs, not much power. Inline with the price.

    • By small jobs do you mean sanding back heels and bunions? How would this unit go with thick toe nails?

As always …. asking for a friend.

not the kind of grindr I normally use but okay

  • I noticed it has a 'coolant tray' on the bottom. What is that?

    • +1

To cool down any metal that you're grinding would be my guess

    • +2

It’s so that if you’re sharpening a chisel for instance, you can regularly cool the edge otherwise you can accidentally ‘blue’ the metal, which is when it gets too hot and it won’t hold its sharp edge as well.

I’ve got this grinder, and the coolant tray is really paltry though, much better off with a small old can of water.

Wondering if these can be use to sharpen a knife

    • +1

Yep, but you’re probably better with a whet stone - depending on how bad the knife is. It will do it but it won’t be a really fine edge. Just rough and ready. I used to it sharpen an old filleting knife that I use in the shed, but I wouldn’t sharpen a good kitchen knife with this.

I’ve got this one, and it’s alright for the price but because it’s only got the single coarse wheel it’s limited.

What kind of activities are you partaking in in your shed with a filleting knife?

        • Just for cutting up old bits of packaging, and as a general knife when I can’t find my box cutter. Nothing suss..

  • These are okay I've had mine for 4 years now, main issues are the belt is not very wide. It's not a big belt overall it can feel a bit awkward. The tool rest is very basic I prefer the tool rest on my ozito bench grinder it has more adjustment but still basic. If you already have a bench grinder or don't need a grinder I'd buy a proper bench top belt sander.
You can buy replacement belts on eBay for this sander.
