TLC NAND, no DRAM, consider the TBW more like 240 (before they overprovisioned less.)

    Still a good price.

    • 100% ! All im looking at now are ssd with DRAM caching - worth it in longer run to spend a little bit more

Working in the IT repair industry, I've seen several of these drives completely fail within less or just over 12 months of use, do not use these drives to store anything valuable

    • Should I use HDD or SSD to store valuable things? I'll use them as external drives, connected to my laptop less than 10 times per year to archive files
      Thanks.

      • +1

I chose HDD as long as your not bashing it around they are fairly reliable, and when they do start to fail most times you get some indication before hand.

Otherwise encrypted cloud storage might also be an option. Google drive + encrypted archive.

        • Thanks. Could you recommend some HDD models?

          • @Averell: These days it's basically Western Digital :)

      • +5

Ideally, you need to use both, the 3 2 1 backup rule.

        • 3 copies
        • (at least) 2 different media types
        • 1 copy offside

Backup only on SSD is a big no no for me. I had a NVMe SSD which died about 2 weeks ago. Zero prior warning, completely dead. The first day it stopped working, the SSD was showing 1GB (instead of 1TB) and could not be rescued. The next day, completely unreadable by multiple machines.

HDDs, while they might have symptoms before completely gone dead, that's not always the case. I have had 2 2.5 inch HDDs which also suffered from sudden death. However, one of them was a board problem and I managed to source a donor board, get the BIOS/ROM chip transplanted and recovered it.

    • What's the Crucial warranty like here? I have other Crucial SSDs and it's just a matter of time before some of them @!#@!#, just wondering whether we need to go through RMA process ourselves or it is through sending them back to the retailers? If latter, did you get a choice of replacement or refund or just replacement?

      • I am wondering this as well. And since this is from the UK, are we going to have to pay for international shipping to return it?

Thanks OP, instead of the Peppa Pig card I got some lollies instead

    • +1

      good finding!

    • +1

I just used these cheeky lollies for a good discount as well. Thank you!

Recommend paying a bit extra for the MX500

    • +3

Definitely worth paying extra for the MX500, the BX500 has no DRAM cache.

  • +1

with lollies you really want the MX500 for $100 delivered. worth the extra 15 bucks for sure

  • +4

I got the MX500 and a pack of lollies for like $96. IMO the MX is worth the ~$12 extra over the BX.

  • +1

If you're going to buy this, I recommend you click on "shop items" just beside the bright green "Buy 2, save 15%" as their are 1,000+ items that qualify for this deal.
You might find something more useful than a Peppa Pig Birthday Card.

      Never ashoom anything

The MX500 is the one you want, not the BX500. I thought the price was too good to be true.
