Wow here i thought I was going nuts paying a bit more for the hooded Macpac

    • +14

Id never want to be seen in a Macpac jacket, knowing its an ozbargainers favourite

      • +24

Jokes aside I am impressed for the asking price of how well the Macpac kept me warm in all conditions in a recent trip to the mountains. And low key angry at myself for being a tight arse all these years. 10/10 not over hyped ozbargain must-have item.

        • Heah mate what jacket did you buy ???
Obviously it held up well in pouring rain

          Cheers

        • I've had mine for about 5 years and it's still stood up well. I didn't even know it was an ozbargainer fav. That's actually a lil embarrassing.

      • +2

It's pretty much Ozbargin uniform at this point. (I have one in navy and I like it)

        • +1

Seems everywhere I look everyone is wearing a Macpac.

          • +3

@nightelves: Kathmandu arguably has a stranglehold, at least in Sydney.

Practically every third person has the black down with green trim, or the navy with grey.

            • +2

@johnn: And Melbourne, couldn’t believe how many i saw at a market last week..

            • -1

@johnn: Kathmandu is definitely the most popular brand of Tassie Tuxedo’s as well

            • +2

@johnn: Canberra has a down jacket caste system. Kathmandu black/green is lower APS (although macpac has made inroads), north face is middle management and senior execs are Patagonia or something else exotic

        • +1

Navy/red is the nicer of the two imo yea

    • +1

Macpac is always $99 when they do their monthly promotion?

      • -2

It was actually $129 for the hooded one - and sorry $99 is practically nothing for you :’)

  • +12

My $30 ALDI puffer jacket is surprisingly warm.

    • +6

My $20 Vinnies jacket is warm too

      • +3

My $10 Target jacket is warm tooo

    • Yeah, the aldi puffer is great, although I'm beginning to have doubts about durability after 3 or 4 years, particularly on the parts with velcro.

  • Tempting but can’t justify that much for a jacket

    Winter's over.

  • -1

Thanks OP bought 10, gonna layer em for next winter :)

    • +3

Tru ozbargainer would just get the brand name one to layer outside and the ALDI to layer inside HAH

  • thanks bought one

  • +2

    This, chinos, RM Williams.

    A city finance bro’s uniform

    • Isn’t north face the go to?

      • +10

Patagonia for one upping the people in North Face. Arcteryx for one upping the people in Patagonia.

        • I never see other people in Arcteryx, I wish I could so I could be snobby with them hahahaha

  • +13

To all the people saying "oh just buy Macpac", Patagonia has lifetime repairs and a lifetime guarantee.

I have 5+ year old Patagonia jackets, which have been repaired completely free of cost. If a Macpac tears, it will cost you a lot of money in repairs, or you have to throw it away.

Additionally, I had a 10 year old Patagonia bag completely replaced free of cost because the zipper had issues. You aren't paying just for material, you have a lifetime guarantee priced in.

    • +1

Which part of the jacket was damaged?

If Patagonia can do the repairs for free, how come Arcteryx cannot provide the same service for our rain jacket seams?

      • +3

They can, they just don't want to

      • Wear and tear from my dog's claws. They gave me free colour-matched patches, and then when summer rolled around (and I didn't wear the jacket frequently), they replaced the whole pieces of down.

  • Lol i was umming and ahhing on this last night. Checked this morning all gone. Thought that was strange… now i realise why…

Anyways no hard feelings. Probably while the jacket looks good the long jacket will annoy me esp if i have to sit down on a bus..

    • "Probably while the jacket looks good the long jacket will annoy me esp if i have to sit down on a bus.."

It has a two way zipper to fix this issue

      • Yeh trrue! Just not used to long jackets

    • Perfect for standing around watching kids' sport.

  • +5

Next jacket for the rich Ozbargainers should be Arcteryx

    • yeah there is definately a richy rich, but tight-arse category.

  • XL only left. Feels like Macpac is a better deal.

  • +1

Macpac Halo's aren't waterproof though. Having just been to Splendour and having to stand in the rain, I was forced to leave mine back at camp while using a far insuperior outer layer to keep me dry. A quality waterproof Parker vs a down jacket is a pretty different use case and justifies the extra price imo.

  • Do people ever believe these "Previous" prices where things are cut down from?
Maybe I've lived under a rock for too long…

    • +4

Patagonia doesn’t really do sales in store - just online. So they do actually sell at full price.

  • +3

For a supposedly $400+ product to only have 1 image of it in the listing is sub par.

    • +1

      Agree! So hard to guess

  • +1

for the weight weenies that actually use a macpac down for its purist intended trekking/alpining purpose - their icefall down jacket is actually rated one of the better performing packable downs in this review (there's brand snobbery when it comes to gear, the macpac is made in China so may not rate as well based on that fact alone).

    https://bikehikesafari.com/ultralight-down-jackets/#Macpac_I…
Currently on sale for $299.99 for macpac members (and i suspect for most of the time)

I got one myself and aside from fitting little longer in the seams than I like - it definitely holds up well against the patagonias and arcteryxs in my lineup. I do utilise them for through-hiking in light-medium rainfall though - so would be a cakewalk for urban use.

  • Can someone please clarify - is this as warm/warmer than a macpac halo? Is there similar level of insulation?

    • I think honestly, if you're going to be using it in the city and commuting, it doesn't matter which one.
