Which Would You Choose between These Two Laptops?

Looking for long term reliability as much as possible.

Prices pretty much the same and specs aren't 'that' different. AFAICT They wont be used for anything demanding.

Looking for long term reliability as much as possible.

They're both budget laptops that belong in the lower end product lines (Acer Aspire, Inspiron 3000 series).

I'm not sure about their durability since I don't buy consumer grade laptops anymore, but if you want a durable device possibly look into getting a Lenovo Thinkpad T/L/X series or a Dell Latitude.

Dell Latitudes can be purchased at a bigger discount via the Dell Outlet, but if you don't mind used there's many laptop refurbishers like FuseTech AU / Australian Computer Traders

  • between the two of them, I'd go with the Dell.

  • Just thought I chime in with some anedoctal evidence which may or may not help: we have had 2 Acer Aspire laptops and one Dell Inspiron laptop. The Acer Aspires are both still working fine, although the batteries are dead. The Dell Inspiron battery is still ok, as much as you would expect for a battery that old, but some keys on the keyboard are a bit "stuck", meaning you may need to hit it a few times for the key to register, I had a similar problem with a Dell Latitude prior to the Inspiron.

In case you are wondering, I am using a Lenovo now. :)

  • how are they using it?
leaving it plugged into a monitor?
    at home office?
    on the couch?
    on the move?

that impacts the screen quality required, weight, and build quality, size

    • At home, on a table, mostly emails, browsing and some light word processing.

      • Can't recommend buying a laptop for home use. That seems counterintuitive. You are paying a premium for mobility, plus possibly compromising on specs. It's so much nicer to use a desktop computer at home, with a larger screen, and sit further from the screen, with a larger keyboard, etc. You can get desktop PCs that don't take up much space. If not, could just get a tablet for emails, browsing and light word processing. A tablet is more comfortable than a laptop if you want to use it in a variety of locations in the home (e.g. on the sofa).

        • Thanks, the people I'm getting them for prefer a lap top, it's not out of the question that they take them mobile, but not a lot I suspect. :)

  • don't buy either one (3700U is so old), check for frequent Lenovo deals here or may be a Intel NUC and upgrade as you wish.

I don't know why some OzBargainer is so fed up with Acer, but not the Dell one either, Ryzen 3700u is real old, whereas the Acer one have i7 1165G7 which is 11th Gen Intel, being only 1 generation behind (and 12th gen laptop wasn't vastly available until last 2 month or so)

    • I don't know why some OzBargainer is so fed up with Acer,

hehe, all of my laptops were HP/Compaq until I recently bought an Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-57-54QC) from a previous deal, truly amazed by the price vs performance & upgradability.

  • Let me try that again :)

If you want the Dell, and you have this offer on your eBay account, you can get it for $876.

    • Hey thanks! Am kinda leaning toward the Intel one above ATM though. :)

No worries. I'd personally go for the Dell if it was between the two of them, just for reliability and support.

  • the Dell one. probs better build quality. My experience with support has been alright. Bloated with a lot of their software though

  • 1080p is fairly low res for a screen that big. If you bought a MacBook or Surface laptop, or equivalent quality laptop, you could expect it to last many years if you take care of it. These cheap laptops you couldn't expect to be nice to use for half as long.

  • Have a look at Lenovo on EBay, there’s some decent deals when the coupon code is applied.

    Here :

  • make a poll

  • Out of those two the Dell, better build quality.

  • Acers don't have a great reputation for durability/reliability and I have seen it from experience. Go for a Dell or a Lenovo and if you can find one somewhere within the budget, something from their business ranges.

  • Thanks all, went with the Intel's, they seemed the best bang for buck given the budget. :)
