Was thinking of picking a couple of these up, and then wondered what would be the most important thing to put in to a new build to make sure you can deck the place out over time? I don't lik the idea of constantly swapping batteries around, are there versions of these that can be wired in or would I need to start modding?

Cat 6 to every room and power cables every few metres would be a good start

In my experience, zigbee devices comsume very little power, the included cr2032 battery can easily last me a year+.
If you own your place, I recommand something like this https://zigbee.blakadder.com/Aqara_WS-EUK02.html (they run on mains)so you don't have to worry about power
I'm renting my place, so I'm stuck with these battery operated options

    • Don't think IKEA have any hardwired remotes.
These do last quite a while on battery though. I'm currently over 1 year with original battery, multiple uses per day.

I tried adding the basic remote (2 button) to Hubitat, and while they worked, they would occasionally start a constant draw on the battery of 14ma, which would quickly deplete the battery. Once I bought an IKEA hub and moved them all over to that it went great.

I would advise you to ensure that whatever hub or ecosystem you want to add them to, other people have already done it and are happy with it. IKEA stuff works really well with other IKEA stuff.

Get earth and neutral wired to all the light switches so that you can easily use smart switches.

My first hand experience, I've been using the 2 button Trådfri remote since Jan 2021 with Samsung SmartThings hub.

Currently the battery level is at 21%, it will probably last 2+ year. Daily usage to turn on the kitchen lights.

Not exactly the same as this button but similar enough, I hope that gives anyone reading this an idea of how frequently you need to consider replacing the battery.

  • This is a great deal. Does anyone know if this is at any other Ikea? If not I'll probably bite the bullet at $14, because even that is very cheap for a smart button that has 10 triggers.

    • in HA, use the EPMatt blueprint ikea_e1524_e1810.yaml, to add double press as an option to these and you'll get 15 triggers

  • Man I've been after a couple of these for my Home Assistant setup but they are showing as not available on the IKEA website.

I'd be grateful if anyone who is getting some could grab a couple for me and post them to VIC 3121? (paid for by me of course)

Don't even have an Ikea down here in Tassie. If someone's doing an OZb button service, I'd be willing to pay for a couple (obviously including postage) :)

They’re not available because they’ve been superseded by the STYRBAR, you’ll have an easier time getting stock of that.

I suspect Rhodes store simply has a lot of excess stock they want to clear.

  • Sorry for being a noob but can these be used to control Google Home connected lights?

    • +1

Yes but not natively, requires quite a bit tinkering (software)

  • Amazon Echo (with zigbee) detects this okay, “Ikea of Sweden smart device - other” but not sure where to go from here.

    • Also want to know whether these can be used effectively with Amazon echos zigbee if anyone knows?

  • New IKEA remote uses AAA batteries which is obviously better.

    • +1

Oh that's great news! I hope they move away from coin batteries because they don't last as long and are expensive to replace. Also a safety hazard

    • However batteries are not included anymore. (old version include 1 button battery)
Provided that the button battery last over a year on the old one, the 2x AAA may gonna last a decade…

    No stock?

Just got some smart lights and plugs and now I'm on the smart Home Assistant hype train. I want to make an overengineered, ADHD infused smart home fortress. Can anyone recommend a good starting point (blogs or video) to see setup options and potential applications?

  • what protocol? zigbee?

  • They must be clearing them out ahead of the new Dirigera range with Matter support. Great price for a basic switch though! I expect other Tradfri devices will also come on sale soon.

    you need special tulip bulbs

With Zigbee2Mqtt and HomeAssistant the sky is the limit. I've got one as a light control, and the other as a media control.

  • There's about 30 of them left, looks like a couple of them are empty boxes.

Confirmed they checked out $7 for me.

  • I also can confirm stock, maybe 20 left now. In Section 19 (lighting). Marked as $14 but scans as $7.

    • Damn someone cleaned up. Only a couple of empty boxes when I was there a couple of hours ago.

  • As per Ikea:

Can only be used with IKEA Smart lighting products.
The remote control works with TRÅDFRI LED bulbs, FLOALT LED light panels and TRÅDFRI driver for wireless control.
    Works with IKEA Home smart.
Special waste handling may be required. Please contact your local authorities for more information.
With TRÅDFRI remote control you can dim your lighting without a wired-in installation.
The remote control has a maximum range of 10 meters when not blocked by any walls.
A magnet makes it easy to attach the remote control to the wall bracket.
Battery is included, and last approx. 2 years.
