If you are considering purchase of an IPhone 12 Pro Max 128 G. Remember that the new iPhone 14 range will be out next month.
This will mean that both the 12 and 13 range will drop in price,
And this would be the cheapest time to buy either a 12 or 13.
ATM a slightly used 12 can got for around $1100 and a 13 for $1400.
These prices are real and for the genuine product.
Always buy from Facebook market place, and not from Gumtree or EBay.
When buying always ask for the original paperwork, when it was purchased, by the person selling.
You must check the IMEI and serial no’s match the purchase details, as on the box and receipt.
Then check the stolen phones IMEIs register.
Also get written receipt, signed by the owner, verifying ownership, and that it is not locked.
Lastly, put a sim in the phone to verify that it is working, and also that the camera is working.
I know this sounds like a lot of trouble, but it only takes a few minutes, and any genuine seller will always agree.
Always buy a phone that still has some genuine Apple warranty left in Australia.
Current best price for an IPhone Pro Max 128 G is around 1800 at Costco, or at some other places approx $1750.
As you prob know, there is very little disc on IPhones,
So you need to be patient and look around.
You will see lots of Adds on line selling new IPhone pro maxes for around 1100 to 1300. These are scams and you will lose your money. The phones work for a short time then they are locked and won’t work.

    • Also get written receipt, signed by the owner, verifying ownership, and that it is not locked.

I would like to know if anyone has experienced the phone getting IMEI blocked after buying it (eg owner claiming stolen to insurance), and been able to use a document to prove it was purchased and get it unlocked (it might just be an exercise in futility, like taking video of you packing a parcel for the purpose of avoiding PayPal claims).

I'm going to ignore the iPhone 12 Pro Max, because that's hard to find new in stock nowadays. Yes, JB Hi-Fi still stocks it, but it's the 512GB version…

In terms of the iPhone 13 Pro Max (and assuming you want to buy a new one), you have some options.

    Retailer Cost Comments
David Jones $1749 David Jones is currently offering a $100 discount on iPhones and iPads.
Apple $1849 Apple Employee Purchase Programs (EPPs) offer a 2% discount on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
    JB Hi-Fi $1849
    Officeworks $1847
    The Good Guys $1849
Costco $1734.90 A Costco membership is required before you can purchase it.

My three-pronged approach to getting a new iPhone at the cheapest possible price is:

    • Price match or price beat
    • Cashback from Shopback or Cashrewards
    • Discounted gift cards

    David Jones

Price Match / Price Beat: N/A, as David Jones is the cheapest of any retailers in the table provided (excluding Costco).

Cashback: N/A, as David Jones excludes the purchase of Apple products from cashback they offer via Shopback or Cashrewards.

Discounted gift cards: I cannot think of any ways of getting discounted gift cards for David Jones at the moment.

The cheapest possible price is $1749.

    Apple

Price Match / Price Beat: Apple does not do price matches on the Apple Online Store. However, I have heard that it is possible to get Apple in their physical stores or on the phone at 133 622 (133 MAC) to get them to match the price of an authorised retailer (as long as the discount is not greater than 10%), so you should either get Apple to match David Jones' price or Officeworks' price. This assumes you live near a David Jones or Officeworks with stock available…

Cashback: Cashrewards and Shopback offer cashback (usually 1.5%) on purchases at the Apple Online Store. If you go via Cashrewards, you can use this in conjunction with using Apple gift cards as a payment method. However, if you go via Shopback, their terms are not clear if you can use Apple gift cards as a payment method and still get cashback.

Discounted gift cards: A number of gift card portals sell Apple gift cards at a 5% discount every day. There is also a deal currently going on at BIG W where you'll earn 20x Everyday Rewards points on a purchase of an Apple gift card.

    The cheapest possible prices are:

    • Assuming a David Jones price match and redemption of $1749 worth of Apple gift cards that were purchased from BIG W: $1749 + 34980 Everyday Rewards points (equal to $174.90 in Everyday Rewards Dollars).
    • Assuming an Officeworks price match and redemption of $1847 worth of Apple gift cards that were purchased from BIG W: $1847 + 36940 Everyday Rewards points (equal to $1847 in Everyday Rewards Dollars).
    • Assuming no price match, redemption of $1849 worth of Apple gift cards that were purchased from BIG W and purchasing via Cashrewards for 1.5% cashback: $1821.26 + 36980 Everyday Rewards points (equal to $184.90 in Everyday Rewards Dollars).

    JB Hi-Fi

Price Match / Price Beat: JB Hi-Fi should be happy to price match David Jones or Officeworks. In my experience, staff will usually require a David Jones or Officeworks near you to have it in stock (or have it in stock for delivery to your location) before they will price match. Btw, you could always try to get JB Hi-Fi to price match Costco, but considering that is a membership-only store, you'll most likely be told that it's not possible to price match Costco. However, there is no harm in trying!

    Cashback: N/A.

Discounted gift cards: A number of gift card portals sell JB Hi-Fi gift cards at a 3-5% discount every day. If you have Ultimate or TCN gift cards that can be redeemed at JB Hi-Fi, you can use them to help pay for the iPhone too. There are currently no deals for Ultimate or TCN gift cards at the moment.

    The cheapest possible prices are:

    • Assuming a David Jones price match and redemption of $1750 worth of JB Hi-Fi gift cards that were purchased at a 5% discount: $1662.50.
    • Assuming an Officeworks price match and redemption of $1850 worth of JB Hi-Fi gift cards that were purchased at a 5% discount: $1757.50.

    Officeworks

Price Match / Price Beat: Officeworks should be happy to price beat David Jones, but staff will probably required a David Jones near you to have the iPhone you want in stock. You can ask for a price beat either in-store or over the phone, but you cannot ask for a price beat via the Officeworks website. Btw, you could always try to get Officeworks to price beat Costco, but considering that is a membership-only store, you'll most likely be told that it's not possible to price beat Costco. However, there is no harm in trying!

    Cashback: N/A.

Discounted gift cards: It is very hard to find discounted Officeworks gift cards, although Coles has an upcoming deal where you'll earn 2000 bonus Flybuys points if you spend a minimum of $100 on an Officeworks gift card at Coles. You cannot redeem Officeworks gift cards on the Officeworks online store, and I think you cannot redeem it over the phone with Officeworks, but you will be able to redeem it in-store at Officeworks. Btw, if you have a Flybuys card, don't forget to scan your Flybuys card or provide the Flybuys card number, as you will earn Flybuys points on the purchase of Apple products at Officeworks, even if you get a price beat.

    The cheapest possible price is:

    • Assuming a David Jones price match: $1661.55.

    The Good Guys

Price Match / Price Beat: The Good Guys should be happy to price match David Jones or Officeworks. In my experience, staff will usually require a David Jones or Officeworks near you to have it in stock (or have it in stock for delivery to your location) before they will price match. Btw, you could always try to get The Good Guys to price match Costco, but considering that is a membership-only store, you'll most likely be told that it's not possible to price match Costco. However, there is no harm in trying!

Cashback: N/A, as The Good Guys excludes the purchase of Apple products from cashback they offer via Shopback or Cashrewards.

Discounted gift cards: A number of gift card portals sell The Good Guys gift cards at a 3-5% discount every day. However, keep in mind that you can only redeem a maximum of 2 The Good Guys gift cards on their online store (but you can redeem an unlimited number of The Good Guys gift cards in their stores). If you have Ultimate Home or TCN Home gift cards, you can use them to help pay for the iPhone too. There are currently no deals for Ultimate or TCN gift cards at the moment.

    The cheapest possible prices are:

    • Assuming a David Jones price match and in-store redemption of $1750 worth of The Good Guys gift cards that were purchased at a 5% discount: $1662.50.
    • Assuming an Officeworks price match and in-store redemption of $1850 worth of The Good Guys gift cards that were purchased at a 5% discount: $1757.50.

    Costco

Price Match / Price Beat: N/A, as they are the cheapest store in the table.

    Cashback: N/A.

    Discounted gift cards: N/A.

The cheapest possible price is $1734.90.

Obviously, the option you pick will depend on a lot of factors. For example:

    • Do you have access to discounted gift cards through work, health insurance policy, etc?
    • Do you strongly prefer to use your credit card, because it comes with price protection and/or phone screen insurance and/or other perks that you would miss out on if you instead used gift cards as a payment method?
    • Do you have a Costco membership?

I'll leave it to you to pick the best route for you.

You should probably create a wiki on OzB. This answer is fit to be part of hall of fame. Thank you.

  • I'm not sure what it's like in Victoria. But I had to try three stores (JB, Good Guys and Officeworks) to find one and it had to be 256gb as the 128s were all sold out.

  • Thanks you guys

    • Sorry, slight amendment to my previous comment!

I forgot that Woolworths is currently running a promotion on Ultimate gift cards, where you’ll earn 20x Everyday Rewards points on the purchase of Ultimate gift cards. (Refer to page 31 of this week’s Woolworths catalogue for more details.)

You can use as many Ultimate Teens/Kids/Home gift cards as you want as a payment method in-store at JB Hi-Fi, but you can only redeem one online at JB Hi-Fi.

You can use as many Ultimate Home gift cards as you want as a payment method in-store at The Good Guys, but you can only redeem one online at The Good Guys.

Woolworths sells Ultimate Teens, Kids and Home gift cards in a variable denomination (i.e. you can choose a specific amount between $20/$50 and $500), which means you can get $1749, $1847 or $1849 worth of Ultimate gift cards across four gift cards if you want and get bonus points.

With that in mind, if it were me, I would go down the JB Hi-Fi route and use Ultimate gift cards and try to price match either David Jones or Officeworks, but I’ll leave it up to you. :)
