I have the occasional energy drink myself but i will always be surprised at how many energy drinks people drink in Australia.

    • -6

Why? Most coffee drinkers probably drink more caffeine in a day than 1 energy drink has.

      • +18

Caffeine isn't the only concern with energy drinks

      • +7

Coffee is natural and not sugary, this is just disgusting sweet toilet water.

        • +9

Yeah I only drink sugar free version, the amount of sugar in the normal versions is bad.

          • @CheapBrah: It’s not the sugar alone that makes these bad though…. It’s probably the best part of it.

          • @CheapBrah: How can such brands like Bang Energy be so damn sweet even sugar-free?

            • @dbmitch: Hint hint: non natural ingredients

            • -2

@dbmitch: Most of them contain sucralose. It's an artificial sweetener but it's pretty nasty, raises blood sugar levels making diet drinks pointless for diabetics.

              • @TazBargainer: unironically lying, not only do they not increase blood sugar levels, they arent nasty! despite what facebook science has said theres no adverse affects. unlike sugar which unironically gives heart disease and diabetes

            • +1

@dbmitch: artifical sweeteners that have no adverse affects for ~99.999% of the population backed by years of studies but people claim will kill you.

      • -5

Energy drinks are directly related to heart disease. Every doctor knows this.

      • +1

3 shots of espresso has slightly more caffeine then this drink.

If you are an adult either drinking one of these, or 3 shots of espresso I think you are pretty safe with caffeine consumption.

If you drink 3 of these a day I would have concerns, but I still think the 153g of sugar would be a bigger concern.

        • +6

I sip 50 ml of energy drink, then top it up with 50ml of ethanol 96.6 and play my favorite computer games. What a feeling.

        • -4

This is entirely wrong. If mother only had caffeine from coffee this would be a fair comparison. One energy drink per day is directly linked to early heart disease while coffee is not. If you have up to three per day it can cause heart attacks.

          • @onlinepred: Fair enough, I am just working off the caffeine on the label, but it isn't something I know a lot about. Are you saying the heart disease risk is from other stimulants in the energy drink?

            • +1

@Aureus: Correct, it’s the combination of caffeine, sugar, taurine, amino acids, etc. they all equate to roughly 500mg of caffeine, which is about 3/4 regular coffees worth, but along with a load of sugar too, so it’s like drinking 4 coffees and a coke can all in one drink. No one drinks 4 coffee shots in one drink with a cup of sugar hey. I’m no doctor though so please see a doctor if you are curious. Also look at Australian heart disease, Australian genetic heart disease registry for some information.

        • Considering the RDI for sugar is 50g, oh yeah.

    • +2

Mothers are huge in Australia. They're cheap and taste good. Regional QLD sells out of them a lot. I had to sub to the above deal as of mid-last year just to make sure I had a continuous supply.

Keep trying to quit but alas, I only make it through 15 minutes in the morning before caving.

  • Been subbed to this S&S since last year. Keep an eye out because these 24 packs fluctuate $6ish from time to time.

    • +9

Keep your other eye on your heart too lol

      • -1

Ignorance is bliss… for now ;]

      • And teeth and pancreas

  • +2

Man.. these are so bad for your body. Never mind the adults, they can do whateves to their body, but parents should at least educate their kids to limit consumption of these. i.e don't have cartons of these lying around your house

  • Sub, get delivery, cancel sub, set camel alert for similar price point.. This is the ozb way.. Never leave yourself subbed.

    • Almost got charged for some coconut drink and it was $13 more than my last s&s

    • Sometimes I don't unsub I just push the delivery date 6 months ahead and more than once has this caught me out 😂

  • It's hard to put a price on mother's

  • +14

Real ozbargainers drink Aldi's Flying Power

    • I like the coles brand but they never have them in stock.

  • Waiting for another deal on Monster Zero Ultra… got 24 cans from Amazon for $26 last month… Mother is a tier below Monster on my rating system as well.

  • +1

    Just have water

  • holy shit never realised how bad this was for you, 51g sugar and nearly 250 calories per can
what makes it worse is that most aussies are overweight (don't drink your calories people, especially not if it's 250 of them!)

    • if only the sugar free version was on sale. 51g is crazy

    • It's not any worse than cola it is just a bigger can, people saying all these myths about how energy drinks are bad for you, have you seen the calories/sugar in iced coffees? It is worse than any energy drink and I don't hear people saying old wives tales about them constantly. And there are zero sugar/calorie energy drinks.

      • It’s not the calories that’s bad for you lol. Sure, it also has a huge amount of calories in it, but it’s everything else that causes the real issues.

    • -3

Drinking calories is amazing if you need to gain weight though

      • +4

That’s absurd, there’s a difference between calories from a healthy shake, and calories from an energy drink, not exactly good for teeth either.

  • +6

Nice now just need a s and s on darts and mrs mac pies and the trifecta is complete.

    • +2

      Chilli beef all the way!

  • +2

6 a day should hit the spot.

    • You will be dead in no time :-)

  • Oh mother and monster are different

  • +8

Do we really need 'health' experts commenting on every junk food/energy drink related post?

Its a bargain site not a health forum, I'd say everyone who has had one of these knows exactly how bad they are for you.

    • -1

I mean I agree, but then we should just have voting buttons and no option to comment.

    • +2

What amazes me is the amount of people that don’t actually know how bad it is for them. They assume it’s just caffeine and sugar and compare it to coffee. Which it isn’t at all. It’s like early days of cigarettes, so many people just had no clue when all the information was around them but they didn’t care to look. I only care as my brother in law had a heart attack at 43 directly related to having three energy drinks a day.

      • I always cringe when I see high schoolers walking with big energy drink cans and vapes

        • Oh man that’s crazy!!!

      • +1

directly related to having three energy drinks a day.

Having 3 times the daily dose of something for an extended period of time (or even a one off) is detrimental to health, believe it or not. I think people forget caffeine is a drug and one should never overdose on drugs.

I do consume energy drinks occasionally but I have maximum one per day of a no sugar variety. Having 1 (sometimes 2) 750ml extra shot ice breaks a day was much worse for me.
For reference: Energy drink has 150-160mg per 500ml, ice break has 205mg per 500ml. Not to mention the 48g of sugar per 500ml too in ice breaks. Many more calories in milk too.. 650 calories per bottle.
It's also sold in 2L bottles: 820mg of caffeine, 196g of sugar.

Funnily enough I never got comments about having 2 750ml ice breaks (630mg of caffeine, 144g of sugar) but I would a 250ml energy drink (78mg, 0g of sugar). What amazes me is people don't know ice coffees are bad for them.

        • -3

Buddy, caffeine from coffee isn’t the only thing in energy drinks that give you energy. An energy drink contains a rough equivalent of 500mg caffeine in a 500ml can. Ice coffees are not as bad for your heart no. Some can be bad, like triple shot varieties, but entirely different beast to energy drinks. It amazes me people don’t know this. Ice coffees don’t mix multiple energy sources in one drink, like taurine, sugar, caffeine, amino acids. it’s the mixture that makes them so bad.

          • +2

            @onlinepred:

An energy drink contains a rough equivalent of 500mg caffeine in a 500ml can.

Please cite your sources when making such claims because frankly it's BS how vitamins have over 3x the amount of caffeine that "caffeine" has. Taurine isn't a stimulant. Sugar exists in ice coffees, but not necessarily in energy drinks.

            taurine, sugar, caffeine, amino acids.

I said no sugar variety versus sugar in ice coffees. Amino acids and vitamins both occur naturally and any excess is usually pissed out. Taurine is another amino acid vital for human health and already plentiful in us.

It amazes me people don’t know this.

It amazes me you disregarded my entire comment of information to reply giving no new information.

            • @pennypincher98: This shows how little you know. The taurine in energy drinks is manufactured lol. How can it occur naturally when it’s made from a recipe?

Look at the ingredients mate. Guarana, Taurune, caffeine, at a very basic level all affect your body in different ways, all with a goal to make you feel energised. The combination of them all at once is why they are banned in some countries. The sugar and vitamins is the least bad part of the drink lol.

You want me to google “energy drinks health risks” for you, do you want me to google “cigarettes health risks” too? Is it not enough that the consensus of Australian cardiologists is that energy drinks should be banned?

FYI the sweeteners are linked to weight gain and health risks.

              Preservative (Potassium Sorbate)
              Caffeine
              Flavour

              Guarana Extract

              • +1

@onlinepred: Oh you're just talking about Mother energy drinks? I didn't realise no other brand existed on the market. Even so, the ingredients list is basically the same as a caffeinated soft drink. Excess vitamins get pissed out and if you read my last reply you'd know that. Of course it's healthier to have no sweeteners or sugar. Hell, just drink water your whole life, get adequate sleep and you don't ever need coffee or energy drinks right?

Taurine isn't a stimulant. Caffeine of course is. Guarana isn't in all energy drinks.

Still waiting for that source that there's "500mg of caffeine in energy drinks".

The people who died to energy drinks abused them and I'm sorry for your loss but you don't abuse drugs or shit happens.

Next time bring actual evidence to your reply (not a sob story or fearmongering) or don't bother.

                • @pennypincher98: Mate, is that the drink can have the same affect of 500mg of caffeine. It’s all of the ingredients in one drink having all the side affects of each one together.

I haven’t read through this, but I can only assume it’s the same gist as at the time they were all over the researchers papers being passed around at work. Almost 10 years ago that is.

                  https://www.heartregistry.org.au/2013/08/beware-of-energy-dr…

                  • @onlinepred: Well okay there's a source from an actual organisation but what's annoying is that they provide no information about it, there's a very vague statement with no sources or further reading. Furthermore, in 9 years there seems no update?

Don't know why I feel way more energised on an ice break with 308mg caffeine (+ 72g sugar which surely ups the "caffeine count") then I do on an energy drink that's supposedly got 500mg of "caffeine".

Reason why I'm interested is I did extensive research and didn't find anything that stopped me from transitioning over once I became lactose intolerant. Certainly beats the cold sweats, headaches etc I'd occasionally get from ice breaks (which is why I wanted to lower my caffeine intake too).

                    • @pennypincher98: I would talk to a doctor about it. It’s how the body reacts to all the ingredients, doesn’t really matter if you have sugar or not. My brother in laws blood was described to be thick and almost sticky. Apparently this is a tell tale of people who drink energy drinks. I’m also lactose intolerant. I just make a coffee at home with oat or almond milk Abe take it with me in the morning. Way cheaper and I know what’s in it hey.

Either way, do your own research too. Look up how it increases blood pressure and know the increased risk of heart failure. It may never happen to you, but it’s good to know the increase in risk.

                      • +1

@onlinepred: Well sometimes I'll make my own coffee or get one out, sometimes I don't even need caffeine and sometimes I'll have an energy drink.

Tbf, most of the studies have been focused on if you have multiple or are dependent on them. I'll have maybe 2-3 a week which I understand isn't healthy but hey I'll have heavily processed foods 2-3 times a week too which are probably just as bad for me. I understand the risks, so I have a varied diet but I'm not going to cut them out completely.

    • -1

Highly doubt anyone who consumes these regularly waits for a bargain to come up, but good for the bulk buyer who stumbles upon this. I also hope they have health insurance or Medicare.

      • -1

I wish they would void their insurance so tax payers don’t have to pay for the incredibly stupid.

  • +1

remember to get a diabetes test after ordering this

  • +4

    Also @ Coles, $7 a pack of 4

    • -1

Probably healthier to buy a pack of 4 rather than a heart attack of 24 pack which is gonna tempt you every time you see it.

      • +3

        These are healthier than meth

  • Don't drink your calories, kids.

  • The sugar free Monster tastes better and is usually only slightly more expensive on Amazon

  • +2

I’d rather pay another $7 and get a slab of beer

  • Just settling with flying power, Sugar-free. Much cheaper n tastes better

  • I prefer 250 ml Red bull, max one per day (not everyday).
500 ml is a large amount.

  • +2

They're packing the orders of Mother on the Amazon tour live right now.

  • how come they don't really do V (especially the blue)? Nothing sold by Amazon and no deals for it at all

  • This is almost the price of a case of beer, why, Is there some tax on energy drinks I'm not aware of?
