650
AFPAYDAY

Eureka Mignon Specialita Coffee Grinder - Black or White colours for $577.11. Chrome is extra.

Probably the cheapest it has ever been for what I would have to assume is AU stock. Its only $60 or so more than the long running Espresso Coffee Shop deal but with AU plug and AU warranty and doesn't need to be shipped from Italy. I'd be happy to pay the extra if I was looking for one.

So goddamn tempting. Good thing I have no bench space. It's the only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger.

    • +2

It's so small you can put it on the counter and no one would notice it, it's heavy, doesn't move at all :p

    • If you need a new grinder do it! I bought one last year

Debating between this and the Breville. This is a better grinder but not by the price margin.

My reason for going this over the Breville is because it has a much smaller footprint (I live in a small apartment), dimension wise not so much but the way it’s packaged it looks a lot smaller than it would suggest

      • The Breville is cheaper but a grinder like this could easily last 10 years with nothing more than minor maintenance/cleaning etc. Unlikely to get that sort of time frame out of a Breville. Not that there is anything necessarily wrong with the Breville but it likely has a much shorter life span and should be taken into account.

        • Pretty sure I'm close to hitting that timeframe with the original smart grinder (came with my dual boiler in March, 2013) - and it's not skipped a bit.

          • @SuttoL: -and it's not skipped a bit.
You mean: it hasn't skipped a bean
            :-)

  • +2

Terrific price for this fantastic grinder! Had mine for 2.5 years and very happy with it.

  • +2

Very good price. This is the smaller residential version of my grinder.
Have the eureka atom 65 . Fantastic grinder

  • Not sure why, but the code isn’t working for me.

Probably for the best as I’ve spent too much on coffee in general lately.

    • Code ain’t working for me either…bug?

      • The deal only available if you are paying with AfterPay

  • For real?

  • Awesome price for an awesome grinder.

The baratza 270 is also on sale for a good price. $463
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/194124501671?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mk…

    • +3

Eureka is solid better built grinder, Baratza not as reliable.

      • Not sure where you got that. The baratza linked above is a phenomenal grinder for its price.
For conical there are few above the one I linked, something like a niche zero.
In the flat burr world the mignon is very entry level

        • +2

Don't get offended mate. Many reports and reviews shows Baratza has reliability issues, just read comment below from someone whose Baratza gearbox broke down after 2 years and they bought Eureka and state it's much better built quality and quieter. I am talking about the Specialita, many had it for 10+ yrs and still going strong. Baratza made in China. All Eureka made in Italy..
          FYI Breville owns Baratza now.

          • @huntabargain: Haha sorry if I sounded that way. Wasn't my intention.
I agree that generally Eureka are more reliable I bought one myself. But baratza isn't a bad machine. They do have some qa issues but many many good reports too.

            • @maverickjohn: Sure no worries, there is no one size fit all, Breville pro grinder could be ok for one, Baratza for second person, Eureka for third and Niche Zero for another, just depends how much you want to spend, your workflow and what extra value you get for the extra spend. So its a balancing act I guess. I am also happy with my Specialita for $515

            • +1

@maverickjohn: bravo to huntabargain and maverickjohn for being adults and engaging in a to and fro discussion without it descening into bullshit.

              • @rentonc: We all love our coffee, don't we :)

              • @rentonc: Hahaha I always think we need to be respectful to each other.
Always happy to discuss coffee with anyone.

          • @huntabargain: I just also had to replace the gears on mine last week - $110. Sette Plastic gears just worn out. I think similar with the breville I have will grind coarse but struggles sometime when finer

        • +2

I upgraded from a Sette 270w to the XL, the bigger brother of this one. I don't miss the weighted grinds of the 270w, but I do appreciate not having to send in the grinder for repair on average every 6 months because the scale failed, the power supply failed, the display failed etc. The Sette has its advantages, but it's like the dual boiler, it will break repeatedly.

          • @tor: The xl is a smaller profile version of my atom 65.
Personally if I will buy conical I won't go anything but niche zero.
For a person who appreciates darker roasts conical is generally more preferred and therefore is a different market than specialita.
If you just want to drink a coffee and cant appreciate the flavour profiling .. go for the more reliable option. Which this specialita has hands down.
It's also stepless grinder which is always better than stepped

        • I've used a Baratza 270 Wi before (using Niche zero for a year and a half now). Its grinding for espresso was pretty good and fast but the grinder itself is all plastic and flimsy feeling, not at all at the Niche zero level imo. Plus its super loud. I'd probably go for the Specialita over the Baratza if I have a bigger budget

    • Baratza is loud as hell. I sold mine and bought the Specialita. Mornings are more bearable now.

    • -3

Wouldnt really recommend this, this will wake the hell out of everyone in your house. Trust me.

    • Currently a Sette270 user and the noise is a bit of a killer.
Is the Specialita 55 or should I go with the silenzio?

      • Specialita 55 burrs vs Silenzio 50 burrs
Specialita has 2 LED timer 0.1 sec vs Silenzio turning timer nob on the side.
        Other features are same.
        I would buy Specialita.

        • Sorry, I meant to say is the Specialita 55 much quieter that the 270

          • @Oldmate88: Miles quieter! Sette is one of the loudest grinders I’ve owned and used

  • +1

Got one a couple of months back. Quiet, less waste and the grind and my coffee has improved plenty!

  • +2

Gee what are people paying for their coffee machines if paying this much for a grinder.

    • +16

Rabbit holes, man. Let me tell you about them.

    • +8

The grinder is more important than the machine…. Says the guy who bought this grinder and spent about 3 times as much on the machine

      • +5

        Touche lol.
Machine I bought is 4.5k grinder 1.4k. but really wanted the lagom p64.. or p100 but already blew my budget so settled for Eureka atom 65.
Wife has allowed me at a later stage to buy the p64

        • Which machine did you go with?

I was eyeing machines in that price range, but couldn't justify the jump in price - so went for the recent Breville Dual Boiler deal for $725. Very happy with it, but the $4-6k machines sure are beautiful!

          • +2

@poppingtags: La pavoni botticelli specialty. I got it on a good deal at euroespresso

          • +1

@poppingtags: went from $4k rancilio single group machine to dual breville dual boiler, reason was the smaller boilers heat up quicker then the rancilio, rancilo is now in garage …..

            • @garage sale: That's another reason I couldn't justify the jump to the higher end machines. The BDB has features that many of them don't and a work flow that's still very efficient and enjoyable. One of the best bang for buck coffee machines around.

          • @poppingtags: 725, you got yourself a w there. The rest are just like sports cars, expensive, secy and list worthy. The benefit with coffee machines is they are somewhat reliable.
Enjoy your machine, it's the best bang for buck machine going round.

        • +1

          P100 💦

        • Keep that lady! How is the E64?

    • About 1/5th the price!

Search about for a Breville EM6910 in good nick, that and this grinder (from a previous deal O.S) . Effing amazing!

      • +3

That's a sunbeam, not Breville. I used to have that machine, it served me so well.

      • Had about 3 of those through to 6900 - 6910 series and I loved them. Your ears will thank you for upgrading though. Aside from that and group head temperature across multiple shots, I can't fault then for the price.

    • Alot, this is a cheap grinder, and by far very cheap compared to machines

  • +1

Bought one from an OS retailer in a previous deal to replace a Baratza Sette 270Wi that had destroyed its gearbox after about 2 years. I prefer the eureka. Feels alot better built and is much quieter.

    • Could I please know whether it comes with an AU plug?

      • +1

No it comes with EU plug and seperate AU adaptor with unique antitheft screws. I cut the whole plug and replaced it with side entry AU plug from Bunnings for $3.60

        • Thanks!

        • To be fair that EU/AU adapter is of pretty good quality, probably the best I have seen with a extremely snug fit. It also properly routes the earth wire, which is kind of important considering the specialita has a metal casing connected to earth pin.

          • @truetypezk: Thanks for the info, doesn't seem like the plug is a deal breaker! Is the plug bulky by any chance? Would it interfere with other plugs next to it?

            • +1

@poppingtags: Yeah it is certainly bulky but doesn't cause any issue as long as you use an extension board. If you plug it in directly into a double wall outlet, as long as the other plug is a regular Australian round plug, it will be fine. It won't fit with a wall wart though.

    • Same story here. My 270Wi gearbox also died just after 2 years. Their distributor were fantastic to deal with though, and replaced the gearbox for me at no charge.

I miss the weighted dosing sometimes - made dialing in new beans so easy! Sette had almost 0 retention, but the angled stand mostly negates it on the Specialita.

Specialita is a much better unit in pretty much all other regards. Even just the sound difference was enough to be worth it!

      • When I reached out to the distributor they just referred me to a link where I could purchase a new gearbox.
Agree that the noise improvement alone was worth it.

        • So Baratza has a gearbox? There’s the problem then…noise, breakdowns etc…gearbox design is the reason. Stronger motor directly driving the burr was always going to be quieter and more robust.

Edit: I see that the NZ also has a gearbox (but at the price would hope it's well built). Obviously I need to watch more teardowns, but really the design on these Mignons is so simple…obviously why they have such a good reputation on reliability.

  • Is this much better than a breville smart grinder pro?

    • +6

This is a flat burr grinder.
Flat burr grinders tend to extract better flavours in the acidic berry range of coffee. These tend to be better for light and medium roasts.
Breville is a conical burr grinder and are better for darker roasts. They extract toffee and chocolate notes better.
In saying that the baratza I linked above is better than the Breville and both are conical based

      • Cheers for the info!

    • +3

I have both and I must say it depends. Different flavour profile, each to their own.
However, the specialita is heavier and harder to take apart to clean.
Grind size adjustment on the smart grinder pro are displayed digitally on screen, Specialita is just a small fiddly knob that is incredibly hard to dail in and read the size indication exactly.

3-4 times the price didn't get me 2x better result, that's diminishing return in my mind.

      • Thanks for your thoughts!

      • +5

Smart grinder pro gearbox is made of plastic and will explode many, many, many years before the specialita is done.

        • My smart grinder pro which I had for 5+years (i think it was 2016) is still going strong without any problems.
But yes, I agree with you that the specialita feels much heavier and solid compare to smart grinder pro which is light and plasticky.

      • +1

hard to dail in and read the size indication exactly.

Yes but that only matters if you're switching back and forth between different types of beans or types of coffee you want to make, routinely, and need to remember the setting for each type.

Otherwise it's set and forget per bag of beans. The only thing to remember is clockwise for finer, anti-clockwise for coarser. The actual number on dial doesn't matter for normal use. I would have no clue what number the dial is ever on.

        • Precisely, with stepless the numbers don't really matter unless you keep changing beans. And that is only to find your starting point.

        • Yes, not recommending the Specialita if you are switching between espresso and filter, which I tried doing but later got a hand grinder just for the filter.

Managed to get a single dose kit with a blower hopper (matt black metal hoper+rubber blower fits on top) for less than 80 AUD shipped from China.
Been using it for half a year now and it's been great. The retention is minimal at around 0.1 gram.

With the single does kit, you can really try different beans without worrying too much about grind retention of previous beans. I just wish that the grind setting knob is just a bit larger and easier to read. It really is a pain in the .. compared to some other grinder like the Niche.

What's interesting I found with even when using the same beans is that the room temperature change and ageing of the beans required change of grind size setting on the Eureka, and it wasn't so apparent on the smart grinder pro. Maybe it's the metal construction that is more sensitive to temperature change?

  • Anyone know if v1 or V2?

  • Amazing this thing can dose right to the dot at 0.1 grams.

  • i wouldn’t touch afterpay with a spiked 10-foot pole

they have absolute zero buyer protection

  • Insane deal.

  • It's a good grinder. But by the time you add all the etsy army's mods (Tilted bass, wood accents, blower hopper, etc) you may as well look at the Eureka Mignon Oro Single Dose. Which is incredibly compact, incredible cute, incredibly quiet and just incredibly good.

    • I would have gone for the single dose one, but we are a cappuccino drinkers…

    • Is single dosing really that worth it in terms of taste/freshness?

      • I honestly find it more convenient to grind directly into the group head, yes. You can measure out doses ahead of time if it bothers you into a bunch of cute test tubes, bomb a dose in.

        • I agree, probably an unpopular view these days since everyone on the internet seems to want to create the biggest and most complicated 'workflow' for themselves. I prefer to save time and effort and can still make a good coffee. With a grinder like this or an Atom etc, chances are you won't notice any difference if there is a gram or two of coffee left in the chute.

  • varus give me back my mini mazzer this grinder is prone to blockage easy to do but a pain in 2 half year blocked 4 times maybe my burrs are
not aligned properly or i got a dud

  • Does one have to necessarily be an AfterPay member to be able to use the coupon? I hear horror stories about Afterpay and I wouldn't want to join…

    • Yes you have to pay (at least part of the price) using afterpay, hence you have to join AP. I couldn't be bothered.

    • I used Afterpay once. Not for me. This was before Paypal and my credit card offered installment payment options, making Afterpay an obsolete service.

One thing I hated about Afterpay is that you can't opt out of their SMS reminders. Don't need to be late on payments or any issues, they still send text messages when your payment is coming up. I contacted them and asked if I can please opt out of their SMS reminders as I look after my own payment schedules, and they said no. So I closed my account.

  • Better than niche zero?

    • +1

different use, depends if you single dose or not.

      • +1

Different burr types too…conical vs flat on this…so should be a different flavour profile.

I’m not sure if the likes of myself would be able to pick up the difference, but I would expect the NZ to taste three times better right?

  • +1

Damn this is like the price I paid for the silenzio.

  • Does the fork on this hold a 54mm portafilter?

  • +1

I like mine. It's very quiet and compact, plus it looks good.

That said, I don't see a huge improvement over my old breville smart grinder, which did the job fine. The holder for your portafilter is quite flimsy too, you can't securely put the handle in for hands free grinding.

I don't regret buying it, it's really good, but it definitely wasn't a necessary purchase.

    • It takes ~9 sec to grind double dose, no need for handsfree!

      • How tiny is your double dose? I have mine set at 15.4 seconds for a 19.5g dose.

I know it's not a big deal, I just liked that with the BSG you could securely put the portafilter in and not worry about it falling off.

        • +2

18 gm, different beans takes different time, range from 9-10 sec

        • The eureka atom 65 does 20 grams in 8 seconds

  • +1

Great price! Paid a fair bit more for mine, wouldn't hesitate at this price.

  • Great price but out of stock.

  • Have been looking at getting an eureka turbo with 65mm burrs
    Anyone have experience?
And has anyone gotten a solid colour grinder and regretted not springing for chrome?

To be paired with a breville dual boiler but who knows, one day LMLM? Decent? The new hotness from Synesso? Only limited by my poverty

  • Incidentally, the baby of the Mignon range (Manuale) can be had for a good price if AB sends you a 5% off offer as they did me (bringing it to $445.50). Use that in combination with the AfterPay offer works to bring it down to $378.67.

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/194145159983

50mm burrs, so slower than the Specialita, and no timer. It's still good bang for buck though - whack a bellows on top and single dose with it (and who cares about a timer).

    Black only though.

    • It's also quite loud compared to Silenzio and Specialita

      • Still surely quieter than the geared machines are? I took for granted that it would be louder than the Silenzio though.

Will find out I guess. I ordered one. If it bothers me, I may mod it. I don't usually pull a shot first thing in the morning anyway.

  • +1

Looks like it available again but they have upped the price… now $597.08 with the code… @Alternative Brewing. Whats with raising the price?

    • yeap. they jacked the prices

    • umm is $597 still worth getting?
