[Pre Order] MSI GP66 15.6" QHD, i7-12700H, 16GB, 1TB, RTX3080 Laptop & Backpack $3049 ($0 to Metro/VIC C&C) + SurCh @ Centre Com

90
$50OFFNP

Today on 'MSI needs better advertisements'. Only find this deal while browsing facebook - who does that anymore (except me)?

About the cheapest laptop right now with a 3080m. Not full powered and 8GB vram variant, but still a good 150w with mux switch for a 15.6' form factor and will give you some of the best frames in games thanks to MSI's overboost tech meaning you can actually get the full 150w in games, unlike most other lappys which you are only guaranteed to hit the base wattage (exclu. dynamic boost wattage, that is). Screen isnt the 16:10 that ozbargainers like but at QHD165hz with 100% DCI P3? It aint to shabby at all.

Jarrods review here and gaming only benchmarks here. His unit is 'only' a 3070ti so expect even better performance with this machine.

Anyways. You can buy from either Centre Com or Mwave - its up to you what freebies/discounts you want.

Centre Com: 3099$ - 50$ with code $50OFFNP = 3049$ + Surcharge (1.2% Card & PayPal, 2% AmEx)

Mwave: 3099$ with bonus free Beyerdynamic MMX100 Gaming Headset with code BONUSAMMX100.

For both websites, remember to redeem the MSI Air Backpack on the MSI website, scroll down to 'how to redeem' for the steps, and also join the MSI anniversary lucky draw here.

There is a few more sites with the same $3099 deal, but I didnt opt to post them as they dont have with discount/extra goodies unlike the two I listed.

  • Nice post. Have had a good experience with an msi laptop still going strong after 3 years with the exception of the battery

    • 3 years is a loooooong time in laptop-land. Just saying a brand / model of laptop does not mean everything made by that brand is good, especially after that long a period.

    • Can vouch for MSI, good quality and performance, going strong into my fourth year.

I've got a non-premium build and it's very solid for its plastic composition, but some of the thin pieces for the "grates" around the side fans have broken off. So I'd personally recommend getting the better build especially if you're moving around a bit and plan to keep it a while.

CPU gets very hot in gaming. I have i7/2060 and can't keep temps below 80-90 Celsius (often 95-100) even when using the highest "ultra/performance" fan speeds and propping up on a stand with its own fan.

Battery gets sucked after only 90mins or so with general use (so GPU will be disengaged).

MSI has good overlay settings, giving you control of battery charging and performance settings, etc.

I'm not sure I rate this deal. Probably a good price for a 3080 and a decent bargain, but there are limitations to the 3080 as OP mentioned, I'd expect this thing to absolutely sizzle (100 Celsius?), and there have been sub 3K and even sub 2.5K bargains on top-tier lappy's (including from the likes of Alienware) before especially at the end of the GPU's generation which is where we sit atm

      • Hi mate, this laptop have very decent thermals out of the box. You can check jarrods review of the machine I posted up top.

Im not so sure what you meant by ‘top tier lappys’ for 3k or lower.’ Ive been watching ozbargain laptop posting for a long time. And the closest deal there was for such a powerful hardware inside this form factor was the 2.9k legion 7 deal-and that only came once never to be seen again.

All other cheaper 3080 lappy deals posted here during the last year are much worse, you would be looking at a lack of mux switch and low powered 3080 and have the same 8gb vram, not to mention some were old 10th gen models. This machine is definitely the ‘best performance’ for anything around this price range. Period.

        • Thanks for your post.

The last time there was a good clearance of old stock, I noticed Dell cutting hard on the outgoing 2080 Supers in their Alienwares. This bargain was an example of a top tier lappy going for $2,300 that included i7 / 2080 Super / 32GB RAM / 1TB SSD / 1080p 300Hz. It has it's downsides. It's also not directly comparable to this MSI 3080. But I believe 3080 lappys have entered their end-of-generation stage and you mightn't be getting the best bargain if there are some severe cuts coming up in the next 3-6 months.

IMO: Depending on the individual and their immediate needs, but if your needs are currently being met and you have some time up your sleeve, I reckon you could decide on either waiting for further price drops on 3080s or spending more for a 4080 that will perform more and meet your needs longer.

How does this compare to the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro at $2999 after discount in the current Lenovo 20% deal on Ebay?
That laptop has a better 16" 2560x1600 165Hz 500nits screen and 32GB DDR5. The rest seems to be the same. The Legion has 3070Ti (150W TGP). Does the Legion's TGP number includes boost as well?

          • @Davesday: I would also like to knkw, was looking at getting a gaming laptop aswell

            • @jayzoooo: @jayzoooo, just letting you know I went with the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro and its been very good. I'm sure the GP66 is equally as good if not a bit better but I didn't like the hinge design of the MSI. However, I think the build quality of the GP66 is going to be better since it is all metal.

The Legion exceeded my expectation from a size perspective. It is not as thick as I thought it to be. The fan noise is so much better than my old gaming laptop and the thermals are excellent (CPU ~70C, GPU no higher than 80C in performance mode). The GPU was consistently hitting the rated 150W TGP and in normal mode, it was hitting around 120W. While performance would drop around 10%, thermals are much better at 70-75C and the fan noise reduces considerably again.

*I am replying you here because there was no way to PM you.

  • This or the 2022 Asus G14/G15? In the market for a decent portable laptop for gaming while working FIFO.

    • Does portability/battery life matter to you?

The GP66 will give you much better performance, but also expect the battery being essentially an intergrated UPS.

    • +1

The G14 and G15 are better laptops if you want a portable laptop with good battery life due to the Ryzen CPU. Unfortunately 12th gen already have a bad rap for generating a lot of heat, which significantly effects battery life. 12th gen is only worthwhile in gaming laptops which are going to be plugged in or they will throttle fast on battery due to needing at least 64w TDP to perform.

  • This is a solid laptop from very performance pov. However, the battery and overall aesthetics look is the only part I disliked. Why did it have to have that annoying gamery look especially those ugly hinges…. :(
