  • This is the lockpicking lawyer, and what I have for you here today is a Abus Ultimate 420 U-Bolt Bike Lock.

Looking at it, it looks like a rake would take it out, but I am not an expert.

    • @dekekun Are you saying that's how he summarised this lock as I couldn't find his review on this lock?
If it is so, are you able to post a link? Thanks

      • +1

No, just having some fun. I think you'd usually want at least a disc detainer for one of these, but don't ask me, I'm just an idiot who watches too much Youtube.

EDIT: I see the OP has added a LPL link, but that is a very different lock with a disc detainer core. This one is a double bit keyway, which is less sophisticated.

        • No worries

        • +1

This product does not use a disc detainer cylinder like many Abus bike locks. No special tooling required. Looking at the key and its bitting, it looks like it is a classic pin tumbler cylinder with a slight twist; it appears to have 2 rows of 3 pins to pick. 6 pins in total.

A harsh word would break this lock

  • Shipping to QLD metro is 12.90. Is it worth paying that much more for shipping?

Buy 5 and avoid shipping cost.

good for keeping meth dealers in a basement?

Ugg, what's the feeling of buying something at the previously good price then seeing a deal way cheaper. Oh well. Got this for $49 in July and it's a great lock.

Strangely still $49 on their eBay store. Wonder if it's a price error.

    • The good news is that you are not too far off - $32.89 with shipping for one - and hopefully you have had cracker savings on other postings.

Would have brought 2 for the same postage. One for a mate.

  • That's a great deal. But U locks are not as versatile as chains.

    • +1

A chain of the same weight can be cut with bolt-cutters, instead of needing an angle-grinder.

      • I think you were thinking of cable locks.

        • No, chains too. That is why U-locks exist. A chain plus padlock is cheaper and easier.

OP, The LPL video you linked to is not for this lock. It has a similar physical properties but a completely different locking cylinder. The Abus 40 has a disc detainer lock, which as can be seen in the video requires a specialised tool to pick. This lock, the 420, has a standard pin tumbler locking cylinder with 2 rows of 3 pins to pick. It can be picked with standard tools; tensioning tool + pick. Possibly even rake-able but I am not sure.

    • Thought I was buying a secure lock. At least it's still decent and not too expensive.

      • it is a secure lock. rated gold by Sold Secure: https://www.soldsecure.com/product/abus-420170-hb-230-ultima…

This bicycle lock looks pretty good. It is physically sturdy. Picking locks to steal bikes is very uncommon. 1. Your average bicycle thief is opportunist, they don't go after secured bicycles, they snatch unsecured bicycles. 2. The thieves that do target secured bicycles generally do not have lock picking skills, they will focus on vulnerabilities other than the locking cylinder e.g. cutting, sawing or breaking part of the lock or what it is secured to. 3. While this lock is vulnerable to picking with standard tools, your average picker is likely to take some time to pick because without knowing the model of the lock, they won't know there are 2 rows of pins; they haven't seen the key to provide them that information. Someone picking this lock would first approach it as a single row of pins and likely take long enough to cause them to give up to reduce their risk of being caught.

  • Now I just need to buy a bike

  • Its worth noting that this lock is actually on the Velosure approved locks list and IMHO increases the value of it significantly as typically you can't insure against bike theft if you don't have an "approved" lock
