Best FTTP Router for Media Streaming?

Hi all, currently using FTTP NBN 50mbps, and using Asus RT-AC86U. Recently found the WiFi kept dropping off for no reason (had it for 7 years now) so thought might be time to upgrade.

I do stream fair bit of media files from my pc to theatre using plex through chromecast pro. Does spec of the router matters? Otherwise, pretty standard mobile and ipad usage. Strong WiFi signal is definitely important too, but not fussed having latest WiFi tech as my tech still pretty old haha….

Thanks!

  • Either you have AC68U or 7 years is typo, because the AC86U was released in 2017-2018.

Are you having issues on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz ?

If you are hell bent on a new router, the AX86U is on sale now.

    • Definitely AC68U, so I guess the covid brain fog still persist lol… seems to be more on 2.4Ghz…

again, does increasing wifi speed actually will improve streaming quality?

  • Get a beefier router and bridge your modem to it.

    • beefier such as? and why bridge? Sorry, not very very tech savvy these days

      • You don't bridge a modem on FTTP. Plug in your router to the nbn NTD. Did the RT-AC68U provide enough Wi-Fi signal? How much do you want to spend?

        • Thought the bridge part was weird. I don't mind spending the "right kind " of money, if it means better wifi in the back room and also better streaming quality. My Chromecast is connected through a LAN port if that makes a difference.

          • @Lancerx: If you want to stick with Asus look at the RT-AX86U or AX3000. TP-Link Deco M5 2 or 3 pack bundle is an OzBargain favourite.

            • @Twix: If i do buy AX86U, I could use my current 68U as a extender I guess? But that also mean I need to connect 68U to the LAN port right?

              • @Lancerx: You have two choices with the RT-AC68U.

                1. Configured as a AiMesh Node using Wi-Fi.
                2. Configured as a Wi-Fi access point using an Ethernet cable.

Be quick if you want the RT-AX86U. It has just come back in stock after being out of stock for ages.

  • Ubiquiti Edgerouter X + Ubiquiti AP Lite

    rock solid option

    • But you would need LAN connection for AP lite no? or is this MESH setup?

      • FTTP NTD -> Edgerouter X -> AP Lite

        Edgerouter is the router
        AP Lite is the wifi

But, if you're not technical enough to know that from just the components listed, a ubiquiti based setup might not be as plug and play as you'd like/need.
