Qantas is offering $50 as an apology for travel chaos.
"Qantas will formally apologise for the carrier’s chaotic recent performance and extend an olive branch to millions of Australian customers this week, offering them $50 flight discounts, additional lounge invitations and improving reward seat availability"

Australian and New Zealand frequent flyer members will be offered $50 towards a return Qantas flight and an invitation to visit a Qantas lounge.

Silver frequent flyer members will have their status extended for 12 months and receive an invitation to the Qantas Club or an international business lounge. Gold members will be invited to visit one of the airline’s domestic business lounges.

Platinum and platinum one members have also been promised between 15,000 and 30,000 Qantas points.

I had been trying to link my Qantas club invitation passes to my ticket in last 3 months and I always received "something went wrong" message. I contacted the web support and it is a blackhole.

Qantas can issue 100 lounge passes to everyone and then don't allow them to link it.

        • +6

Agree these are broken. Same issue, and on the rare occasion you can actually use them the staff are surly and act like you're getting in using a scam.

        • Have had the same problem here. Cannot get the lounge passes to link

        • +2

link through mobile. I had same issue via website

          • @ozbargainerlife1: Tried different browsers, PC, Mac, phones etc.

Seems to be associated with predicted lounge capacity.

        • -2

For those of us who have QC lifetime membership, get out & stay out! And stop clogging up our lounge which we paid for 20yrs ago & get to enjoy lots of freebies when flying on our $50 Jetstar flight.

          • @M00Cow: In retrospect it was a very cheap $5k. Should have done it back then. Kudos to you for getting it.

        • also cant use an invitation in school holidays according to their site

wel they say "may" but means you cant

      • +12

Qantas seems like a bunch of incompetent crooks.
Got flight return leg cancelled due to Covid. Try calling them, phone never answers, even after 2-3 hours on hold (Platinum FF).
Got some voucher, that I can't see or use.
In late 2020, finally got through and they said they will issue a refund.
Downgraded to Gold, since they are not flying to my location… Been on 6-8 international flights on other carriers… They pick up the phone, answer whatsapp, social media. etc Can't fly Qantas back to Aus…
No refund from Qantas came through. Tried calling several times, (Gold FF, phone never picks up)
Finally got a response in 2021 saying that they refund.
Contacted again in 2022 - asking them what's happening. They said they will issue a refund.
Get an email in July 2022, asking me if the issue is resolved, otherwise, email back.
        A month later, still nothing..
Lifetime silver now -> no idea where the lounge vouchers are - had family I could have gifted them to…

I will fly qantas when Alan Joyce quits

    • +9

I'll fly Qantas when they're cheaper than other flights. They never are!

      • -3

Their flyer points are, and better than Virgin flights (connections, etc).

        • +2

Depends where you're going. I find QFF redemption generally more expensive than VFF, not to mention the lack of availabilities.

QANTAS DECLINE EXPLAINED: Scott Morrison secretly took on CEO role 2 years ago

“I remember a colleague at the time saying, ‘there isn’t anyone who could (profanity) this airline up more than Alan Joyce’, and at that moment Scott Morrison walked in and started setting up his office”.

      • +15

Given he was there in the lead up to 2020 was he therefore not somewhat responsible for being 11 weeks from bankruptcy with how they structured their debt? Especially given he now attributes being stronger due to the different debt structuring forced upon them because of COVID?

      • +8

Yeah he was thanked, back in 2015, and 2016. And he was well compensated for it too.

That's old news now. If he can't even get the customer service to stay competitive, I don't see why the customers should stay loyal.

    • -1

Cool! More opportunity for me to get QFF seats then as 1 less seeking them.

  • +4

    Can't see any offer?

  • +45

Do I even need to justify this neg vote after the absolute horrendous experiences these last few months?

    • Lol I honestly can't blame you for the downvote.

  • +69

Increase ticket prices by $100 and gives you a $50 discount. Sounds like a great deal (for Qantas, of course).

    • +16

Like the other comment says, increases prices by a hundred bucks and give out $50 vouchers.

      Gaslighting at its finest.

    • +10

      this guy gets it

    • +5

Then cancel the flight and the only alternatives are $300 more.

  • +24

Way to improve the already overcrowded lounge experience by giving basically everyone a lounge pass

  • +33

I flew halfway across the world with Qantas to London only to find that my return flight ‘didn’t have a ticket issued’. A $50 discount doesn't make me want to go through that again.

    • +16

I had same issue but was in Santiago. Turned up for my flight home and it wasn't issued but showed up in the app. I was even able to choose my seat 😂🤣.
Had to pay $5000 for next flight available 3 days later. Had to wait 9 months for a refund after fighting for it with partner airline. Qantas offered me 'x' amount of points which equalled $100 for the 3 days in Santiago and compensation for missed work. Think initially offered $20.
I bought myself a burrito to feel better 🌯🌯
Gotta say it was a good burrito.

      • +2

Eff me, I've flown that SYD-SCL-SYD route (good ol' 747's) and I definitely would not want to be left stranded on the other side of the Pacific by those QF*ckers.

        • Oh man, flying over there on a nice LATAM plane and then on the way back getting stuck with a Qantas 747 with a Cabin pack from the early naughties was the absolute worst. Tiny entertainment screen that flickered the entire time, and they just had 12 channels with the same movies on repeat. Couldnt even rewind. This was start of 2019 and it blew my mind that Qantas still had them in the fleet

      • +1

This happened to me in Santiago too! They didn't charge me for the next flight and they refunded the cost of me changing the flight (that they didn't issue). So strange that they wanted to give you $20.

        • $20 worth of points. Ie. Whatever x1000pts they offered if I went to the rewards site to exchange into $$$ it wasn't much. Not actually $20.

      • +8

I turned up for a domestic flight booked months before and it was overbooked so they kicked me off onto the next one… even though I was flying as a primary caregiver to my disabled father who couldn’t even get up out of his wheelchair.

So they did the logical thing and split us up anyway.

      • +1

        Sadness

    • This happened to me when flying to Fiji from Perth via Sydney. Got to Sydney and then tried to check into the connecting flight and they said I didn’t have a ticket issued. Luckily there were reward seats available and I could redeem one on the spot but otherwise I would’ve been up shit creek without a paddle, whilst everyone else I was traveling with flew on to Fiji.
They still haven’t refunded redemption cancellations from March, and haven’t responded to my email requesting they attend to this I sent in early July.
I also had a shit time getting home for related reasons.

      • Still waiting for an email I sent them in January for a similar experience, arrived in the USA and the day of arrival I received an email that I had to call to reschedule my own week back.

    • Was it on another airline? I bet qantas were gambling on cancellations and disruptions and never actually bought your seat. The money ends up on a credit voucher that’s not actually useable and they get to keep the cash.

  • +1

Waiting for Alan to send me an email with this message.

  • +5

Booked three return flights to Sydney last week and none of them had tickets issued, everything seemed normal until I tried to check in. It was several hours on the phone and finally managed to speak to a clueless agent who kept putting me on hold to say everything was done and then go away and come back and repeat herself.

I had 6 different payments taken from my credit card, but it has normalised now and the correct amount taken.

    • +4

With the brain cells lost and time, a $50 return is meaningless to customers

  • +23

As they say with karma, what comes around goes around. Alan Joyce’s time is ticking. What he had done cutting workers jobs and maintaining relatively high salaries for directors (while asking and successfully getting govt support/money), all coming back to bite.

Not sure why there aren’t more journalists and the public criticizing him on this.

Hope he doesn’t get a hefty golden parachute when he leaves.

    • +14

      Of course he will.

      • +6

This man is a spin/sh*t talker, an embarrassment and hope the goes down in shame.

    • +10

"Not sure why there aren’t more journalists and the public criticizing him on this"

The journalists know that he's such a vindictive little pr1ck that they'll lose lounge priveleges etc, but I think the tide is finally turning on him.

    • +9

Because the media has a bias in wanting access to Qantas for stories and more importantly their big advertising dollars. The media are complicit in not asking the tough questions or advocating for the countless people that have been ripped off or left stranded overseas in terrible situations. (Just look at the stories from this thread alone)
Now they are giving free damage control for Qantas running this "feel-good" story.

    • +3

I remember saying 13 years ago when Joyce took over to qantas staff - This airline will be ran into the ground with that attitude.

      Here we are…

    • +7

Not sure why there aren’t more journalists and the public criticizing him on this.

One of Australia's biggest advertisers. Journos get taken for free holidays around so they wont bite the hand that feeds

  • +9

I waited on phone for 8 hours on 2 occasions - had to have phone on in bed while sleeping. A friend was on hold for 20 hours.

    • +1

Can relate to that. Called few times, diff staff told diff time when I can get my refund.

Now 4 months waiting and still waiting to get my own money back. Unbelievable for big company like this holding their customers’ money for so long without proper explanation/policy.

    • Pretty bad. Did some googling and luckily found a priority number which ended up being a service number, person was pissed that I called but put me thru to the right people - took 30 min only thankfully

    • That is insane! Max I waited for was 2 hours.

Gunna need a bit more than $50 to buy back the loyalty of all the people and employees they have burnt over the past 3 years

  • +2

Has anyone actually seen increase in reward seat availability?

I searched for reward seats last week and did the same search and can’t see anymore availabilities than there were a week ago.

    • Nope. Not in premium cabins.
I just checked too and up the top where it has the dates and amount of points and it indicates there on dates there are seats but when you click on it nothing comes up.
So either website error or maybe they will show up soon.

"…50 per cent more Classic Reward seat availability through to 30 June 2023 with the first tranche of additional seats released from 12pm Monday across international and domestic flights."

  • +1

I arrived in Melbourne via Qantas this week for work … the bags were so beyond late that people were using the Luggage Carousel as a park Bench

  • +1

Qantas used to take 4 hours to get issue resolved. Now they outsourced support to telco overseas who doesn’t have appropriate software permissions and will tell you off in less than 10 minutes. Progress?

    • +1

      progress for the outsourcer yes

  • How does one get the voucher? Link just goes to the homepage and no obvious spot to claim $50
Unless it’s yet to be revealed…..

    • +4

      Alan Joyce IOU

"We promise to give you $50"

  • +6

Are they going to lose my bags again?

I also love how I just got a survey from them asking how their customer support was from a ticket that was straight up ignored months ago.

  • +11

Love how Qantas keep making it sound like these issues aren't limited to them, and are industry wide.

The entire industry is having trouble, but all of Qantas's troubles come back to laying off 1 in 5 people who worked for them (many of them found to be fired illegally), and then outsourcing to companies who don't have the workforce to get the work done.

Any attempt to call Qantas to sort out issues takes forever on the phone, and then once you're speaking to someone, it seems like their systems are slow and useless (took 20 mins for an operator to cancel a refund a flight that they'd rescheduled from 6pm to 6am).

But just now I was able to contact someone at Air Canada toll free, despite it being 1am there, with no wait on hold, and had my issue resolved in less than 5mins.

These token gestures from Qantas mean nothing. Shareholders need to boot out Alan Joyce ASAP.

    • Correct.

    • But just now I was able to contact someone at Air Canada toll free, despite it being 1am there, with no wait on hold, and had my issue resolved in less than 5mins.

That contrast between Qantas and AC says a lot because… AC sucks too.

  • When does this take effect?
I'm silver and see no 12m extension..

    • Typical Qantas?!

  • -1

So Gold gets less compo than Silver? Or am I mis-reading?

    • +3

Gold has lounge access, so extending that by 12m is a pretty massive benefit.
Silver by 12m not so much

      • -2

“Gold members will be invited to visit one of the airline’s domestic business lounges.“ doesn’t say getting extended for 12months.
I had Qantas flights cancelled and eventually refunded 3 times recently. Not convinced a domestic business lounge visit will make up for that. Can save more than $50 if book with different carrier.

        • +1

doesn’t say getting extended for 12months.

I'm assuming it does and the "journalist" is just including that sentence with the one that comes before it.

Would be nice if I could find any details at all on the official Qantas site.

        • Gold get a pass for domestic business lounge + 12 months extension.
Silver get a pass for qantas club / international lounge + 12 months extension.

          • @Geoff-bargain: And WP gets 15,000FF plus a 12months extension. So basically a free return flight SYD-MEL plus an extra year to wait in the lounge for the flight to be ready to board!

    • +1

Gold lounge pass will be for Domestic Business Lounge (which is usually accessible for Platinum and Oneworld Emerald and Business passengers)

      • Wish they included International First class lounge passes. That would have been sweet.

      • Has anyone actually got this yet freshofftheboat? Do we have any idea when these lounge upgrades will be issued?

I keep looking in the "Manage your Complimentary Lounge Invitations" (which is where I'd expect them to be) and can't find them. In fact the invitation type isn't even specified, Domestic/General/P1 – Benefit/Titanium – Benefit are all incorrect for the exact benefit promised.

        • Yep, got them the end of last month. Invitation type is DBL.

  • +1

I am FF member, can’t see anything?

    • +1

I believe you can only see from Monday when Qantas send out this info.

  • +6

My Lifetime Silver status will be extended for another year. Thanks AJ.
