Good way to grow your own $50 lettuces.

    • Precisely the reason we are trying to create some offers. The more local food production and self-reliance the better off we are all going to be.

  • +4

Lettuces have come down in price so it is back to “ahem” tomato plants again.

    • haha. cherry tomatoes guys.

      • +2

Seriously, being able to grow your own cherry tomatoes and basil makes great Caprese salads.

no doubt! love this! you know what's up!

        • cherry tomatoes and basil are growing like weeds in any patch they can find in my small yard - without any hydroponics or attention. Self seed each year.

          • @INFIDEL: This would be good for apartment balconies though

          • @INFIDEL: Might be in your yard. I’m not so lucky.

            • @try2bhelpful: In the North - its hard not to have flourishing plants on a small outdoor space. Even in pots on balconies. As long as there is access to sun & water.

              • @INFIDEL: My tomatoes plants have been turning yellow the last few years and dying off before I got much crop off them. I don’t have much Sun the courtyard so I put them out on the balcony.

                • @try2bhelpful: Mine are tasty cherry tomatoes… growing like weeds in the courtyard & beside fences. Always miss a few when harvesting, which become next year's self seeded crop.
Normal ones require attention I can't be bothered with.

Google the issue - could be lacking soil nutrients like magnesium. Basil is often grown with tomatoes - a "companion" plant. But sun & water are essential.

                  Enjoy your bounty 🍅🍅🍅

                  • @INFIDEL: Mine worked well the first year and have had trouble since then. Maybe time to have another shot. I do grow basil with them but seem to get a grub that eats that as well.

I agree self grown ones do seem to taste best.

    • get them $50/kg green beans going

  • Hi Rep, isn't this the same as this post in March for $420 delivered?

  • No. Its cheaper and we've changed out out the conventional nutrients with a one-part, premium Happy Soils product that has just hit the market.

This system is 149$, which is not identical to what the rep sells. But my question is, is that extra worth an extra 175$?

I have the smaller version of this. It is practically useless without the pump as it is recommended to be watered everyday with nutrients and multiple times per day if possible.

Without the pump, I would not bother purchasing at all.

      • Correct! :) thank you for the comment.

    • That doesn't include the tank or accessories. That's literally a watering planter. have you taken a look at the like for like?

    • The 5 pot Mr Stacky on its own, Large Size, is $85 (https://www.amazon.com.au/Mr-Stacky-Australia-Stackable-Terr…)

The key differentiator item with the full kit is the reservoir, as it is uniquely shaped to fit the base of the Stackys. The other items (consumables, pump) could be replaced with generics so it is up to you whether you want to DIY or not. There are quite a few youtube videos of people who have rigged their Mr Stacky pots with buckets and aquarium pumps.

The DIY route can be done for less than the +$295 premium (i.e. $380 shipped - $85 for the pots alone), but that decision comes down to how much you want to faff around with fittings & tweaking it, whereas the full kit would snap together like Lego and looks nicer.

  • How does this compare to the Airgarden?

    • The Airgarden is a complete Aeroponic unit. It runs purely off fog nozzles that are internally fixed. This requires the pump to run 24 hours a day. The Vertical Starter runs on a drip feeder from top to bottom through the layers of coco media (replace soil) as this is more suitable for hydroponic purposes. The pump only feeds once a day for about 15 mins (depending on the weather) during summer, we shift that from 15 mins to 30mins per day. Hope that makes sense!

      • The airgarden pump doesnt run 24 hours a day but cycles on/off. Can run it 24 hours a day if you want to really accelerate growth or 12 if you want to make more use of solar. It doesn't use fog nozzles, just a simple drip style system. It's also designed and made in Brisbane (I believe this one is made off shore?).

  • I'd be concerned about running a Rockwool media on an on/off cycle. Though you are correct about the run cycles accelerating the growth rates. The other consideration; In the event of a power outage or pump failure, the cons include pretty quick crop failure, due to the fact that rockwool doesn't hold moisture for very long and has the tendency to dry quickly. Would you know if the Airgarden pump is Australian-made? The major pro is the rapid growth potential. So sorry about the confusion. I thought you meant aerogarden. This unit is American-made and produced due to the patent on the tank.

  • I've had a tour around a commercial hydroponic farm (growing lettuce for Woolies), where they injected ozone into the circulating water to prevent bacteria (and maybe algae?) from multiplying. Is bacteria/algae not a problem with small hydroponic units, or how is it prevented?

      Hey Russ,

Not on a system like this. It's very unlikely to occur.
