Don't say sorry Sam. Every week we know what you do for us, what you do for me!!

I fixed the spelling in the title, as my contribution to the war effort.

There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for.

      • This is good, mr. Gamgee. However, an average Australian won't be able to tell the difference in pronunciation as both sound almost exactly the same.

        • What is an average Australian these days? Are they just like the "average American" who pronounces Melbourne or Brisbane?

          KEE- eev - Ukrainian pronunciation

          KEY-ev - Russian pronunciation

@shellshocked: Same Australian, who wouldn't be able to tell the difference between two languages just by listening.

This is before we get to the fact that changing the name of a 19th Century dish is idiotic, no matter where you stand when it comes to geopolitics.

          Sounds pretty different to me?

          • +1

@Tiggrrrrr: That's not really how it is pronounced. Both options you mentioned could be used to say "Kiev".

"Kyiv", on the other hand, has sound that is represented by letter "ы" in Russian, or "и" in Ukrainian. It is not represented in English, and it's a bit hard for native english speakers to reproduce it.
            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yery
you can listen the example of Kyiv pronounciation here, first word in the video
            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlGdw7AW-tU

            source: native russian speaker

            • @interlocal: My point was that the two sound completely different to me. Mind you, I'm not Australian I am multilingual, so maybe I hear things differently?

The link you sent (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlGdw7AW-tU) still sounds like Keeeee-iv. Which is how I was trying to represent above. However, I have since been corrected by an academic that that pronunciation is surzhyk, so is still the Russian inflection on the V.

It would seem that technically speaking, the "V" isn't pronounced like a V sound in the Ukraine.
As you are a native Russian speaker you may (or may not) know that in Ukraine as opposed to Russia it's more a "yu" as in W.

              So maybe try using Ki-eee-yu.

An interesting link here: Episode 6: Pronouncing Kyiv and the Politics of Speaking Ukrainian

source: I asked the (native) Ukranian guy sitting next to me who referred me to the pronunciation endorsed by Yuri Shevchuk, a lecturer in Ukrainian at Columbia University and author of the Ukrainian-English Collocation Dictionary.

That's what Putin said, after re-assessing the objectives of his special military operation.

He must have the 10,000 bonus points offer too.

        • He's attracted to the red branding.
