  • I have Merlin openers on both of my tilt doors, but the bloody things are so loud! Any thoughts on a quieter device?

    • +2

Depending on the age, it could be that you have an older AC motor using a chain. They're indestructible, but geez, they don't sound it…

The Tempo is very quiet, if you close the internal house door to the garage you barely hear it. My home office backs onto the garage and I barely hear the door opening and closing. There's also a few different smartphone kits, battery backups and other accessories you can bung on the opener if you want to make it fancy.

The other thing you can do is give the door a bit of a birthday - Wipe out the tracks with a clean rag and give them a go over with some silicone-based lubricant or lithium grease. Please don't use WD-40, causes some annoying to deal with long-term problems. You can grab a can of silicone lube from Bunnings for $15-20 a can.

      • I have a can of chain lube handy, might give that a go. Thanks for the advice.

Same with my sectional/tilt door. I started researching on reddit/r/garageporn and a number of people are now going with motors that attach to the side for both space and quietness.

It's called the Merlin Garage Commander :
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/303499547058

That's what I'll be going with once my old motor dies.

      • Thanks for the link, I'll check out that subreddit. I was a little shocked to see the produced i needed was $929 on Merlin's official page, but then found it almost $500 cheaper at a reseller.

        • Merlin do have a vested interest in keeping their RRP's as high as possible as it looks great for when their installers offer them "x% off RRP'. In all fairness, the price on the Merlin site does include installation, but there's a fair jump in price :)

          • @GrecDeFreckle: I'd do it myself (replace existing noisy AF one with the AC motor & chain drive) but I'm sure my local guy will do it for $200 or less. Doesn't take very long.

Huh, I've never come across that subreddit before. Might need to do some reading!

Oddly enough, those 'Jackshaft' style openers are wildly popular in America. Roller doors in USA are relatively new with the majority of homes having a one-piece panel or sectional door. I also had a client a while back asking for a 'High Lift' garage door, which gives enough headroom for a car lift in the garage. There is very little call for these in Australia, but that Commander Ultimate (it's a little cheaper on our website) is used for that specific application as well.

        • They look great, what’s your opinion on them by the way?

          • @Yowiefied: I've had a think on this. It's a bit complicated.

As far as inclusions go, the Commander Ultimate has everything you could ever want, including a few things you thought you would never need. It's a pretty high price tag if you're just looking for a garage door opener. Removing the motor from the ceiling is advantageous if you have a two-story home with a bedroom above the garage. Whilst the new sectional motors are quieter, you still have vibrations transmitted through the floor. It's also really handy for tight installations for bulkheads or other obstructions where a standard rail wouldn't fit. They're quiet and strong, but so are all of the other belt rail openers these days.

I'll be realistic, given I'm a bit tight when it comes to shopping for bargains as well. Unless you plan to take advantage of the space that's freed up behind the garage door, why go for the more expensive option? Don't get me wrong, the motor itself is great. It's just a thought.

  • How hard would you say these are to install?
Alternatively, what would the going cost be to have someone come and install it?

    • +2

As long as you are reasonably handy, the installation isn't too hard. Auto Openers did a fantastic video guide on installing panel door openers and roller door openers a while back. The linked videos were actually ATA motors made under licence for Auto Openers so the basic steps will be extremely similar.

ATA also provide online step-by-step installation manuals for their openers. As long as you follow each step, take your time and have a basic set of tools you'll be fine. If you let me know the opener you're looking at I can pop a link to the guide for you :)

      • Thanks for sending through those vids. Looks manageable. I'm just moving into a new home and it is a ver old motor with a panel door.

Looking on your website for the ATS-2, it is just the motor only; what's the difference with this one? https://www.remotepro.com.au/products/ata-ats-2-tempo-sectio…

        • +1

The product you have linked to is just the Powerhead only with no rail, which is required to automate the door. We are offering the Tempo, plus the required rail :)

          From the listing:
ATA Tempo Garage Door Opener Includes
1x ATA “Tempo” ATS-2 Garage Door Opener
          2x PTX6 Premium Keyring Transmitters
1x WTX6 Premium Wireless Wall Button
          1x 3.2m Belt Rail (suits 2.4m high doors) <<<

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks for clarifying!

I'll see how it goes over the next few days.

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Heya, sorry another question please..
Has any of your customers confirmed if the meross smart garage opener works with the ATS-2 Tempo?
            Thanks again.

            • +1

@sphinxy: From what I understand, the Meross smart kit is a universal kit so it theoretically should work on everything. I looked into the kits a while back, but one of the blokes in the office had a bad experience with two of the kits so we didn't go ahead with that one.

There is a specific ATA branded Smartphone Kit for the ATS-2 Tempo, otherwise, we do also sell a universal smart garage door opener kit for tilt door openers. The iSmartGate hardware is a lot more feature-packed compared to other smart kits we've come across. We are looking at expanding the range of universal 'one kit suits all' in the near future.

  • How strong is the force on a rollerdoor opener? Im in a rental and thinking of getting one of these just cause I'm in a high traffic street so trying to open, park, close, drive is a pain and dangerous. But the door is a bit stiff and heavy

    • +1

Do you know if you have a standard roller door, or a shutter door? If you're not sure, take a few photos and shoot it through to our sales email. If the roller door has been manually opened for some time, you might need an installer to retension the internal spring on the roller door.

But the GDO6v3 would be fine for any residential roller door under 16.5m² (5.5m wide x 3m high). The motor also has a 600N peak drive. This isn't to say it runs at 600N the entire time, it would more likely run around 300-500. But it can punch out 600N when required.

      • Mate thank you for the solid reply. Great customer coms! Ill take a look when I get home. Its a standard roller door but its just been neglected. I do it manually and its just takes a bit of force. I might give it some TLC like you've mentioned above and then if that works buy this one and get it sorted. TY

      • Isn't this the same motor as the GDO6v3, just with different remotes and cheaper?

        • This is one of those "ATA made under liscence" for Auto Openers motors. It is essentially the same thing, but the remote controls don't work on the ATA encryption and won't pair to other ATA garage door openers.

  • Any discounts on sliding gate openers?

    • Not at this stage, but we're looking at running monthly end-of-month sales / specials. It might be coming up in the next few months :)
