Samsung HW-Q990B/XY 11.1.4 Soundbar $1218.00 + Delivery (Free C&C in Victoria) @StanCash

220

Was browsing around and found this deal. May or may not be the lowest price but its right down there. A good deal if you don't have any commercial or EPP access.

Great (one of the best imo)soundbar system if you are in the market for all in one plug and play solution.
For those recommending a stereo setup is far superior blah blah blah, it would be constructive if you can actually suggest comparable products including the speakers and amp etc. And also mention the prices.

Expires 07/09 as per the site.

Only my second post so if I have missed out on something please help me rectify it.

Check out reviews on YouTube. Both q990b and 950a. 950a is last years model and this is superior to that.

EDIT: You could try to price match at JB and use HIM GCs available at woolies 20x rewards. That's another $120 reduction in value.

UPDATE: Was easy enough to get it price matched via jb hifi chat. With GCs its down to about $1098.

  • If you think this is a good price I would recommend using it to price match rather than use Stancash/Billy Guyatts.

Google their reviews and avoid the frustration of dealing with them.

    • I plan on doing the same at JB. Can get the JB hifi HIM GCs at 10% off(20x rewards) from woolies. Bringing it down by about $120.

      • Whats the biggest card denomination you can buy at woolies?

        • $100 and a limit of 10 cards per day for Qantas FF bonus

absolutely brilliant sound bar setup. Could not believe the sound staging this delivers… I expected when I went from stand alone towers to a sound bar I would reduce my sound stage immediately, but the tech in play seems to expand the soundstage, and the wireless rear speakers (still require power) enhance the impact and dimension of sound. I would definitely buy this system again, and would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering a purchase. (I'm not affiliated with Samsung - just a happy customer!)

    • out of curiosity. what are you comparing this to?

      • Comparing to a couple of systems with separate speakers (i.e. 5.1 Klipsch, Sony).

      • +2

Lol we had “real” 5.1, we got rid of it to make our setup neater and realised we were compromising on the sound for a cleaner look. We’ve been blown away with the sound from the bar, sounds heaps wider because rather than the left/right speakers being half a meter from the screen, the side firing speakers throw the sound over 2m to the walls and feels heaps more immersive.

I keep reading these “not as good as speakers and receiver” comments, but those receivers are usually close to $1k, plus the cost of the speakers. Then you have ugly speakers all around the room. And you say "never going to sound as good as GOOD speakers" - oh yeah? So a $4k setup is going to sound better than a $1250 soundbar + sub + rear combo?? no WAY!

Each to their own I guess :)

Dude, the 990B probably sounds amazing for what it is, but it does not sound as good as my 5.1.2.

Just like my 5.1.2 does not sound as good as a 7.2.4, just like that does not sound as good as a 9.2.4..

Are the differences between 7.2.4 and 9.2.4 just as noticeable as the difference from 5.1.2 to 7.2.4? Hell no, but it's there.

          • +3

@BargainHunterJohnnyB: The fact that you're simplifying speaker comparisons down to "more speakers = better" tells me you have no clue what you're on about.

            • -1

@jaejae69: Of Course a good atmos track sounds better on a properly set up and calibrated 7.2.4 home theatre, than a 5.1.2 one.. let alone a sound bar.

    • Do you have it paired with a Samsung TV for Q Symphony?

      • i got QN900A, Q symphony works only in wifi mode

      • Thats on the list for Santa to deliver!!

    • couldnt get it connected to logitech harmony, has anyone done it?

also, i set it to wifi mode, but, it keeps tripping to e ARC and not working

      • I've got mine working flawlessly on my Harmony One Ultimate. Just connect the Harmony to PC or Laptop and set it up with the software program. Mine works perfectly on Wifi, I have a Samsung QLED Q90R 75". I change the sound settings on the TV to play from the sound bar instead of the TV speakers. I run a lot of Atmos through mine so I use HDMI cables anyway. What TV do you have?

rtings has recently put the 990b as the best soundbar for 2022 over the sonos arc and bose 900: https://www.rtings.com/soundbar/reviews/best/soundbar

It's a lot more than what you find with other standout premium setups like the Bose Smart Soundbar 900 with Speakers + Bass Module or the Sonos Arc with Sub + One SL Speakers. If you're looking for a bar with an even wider soundstage, or if you already own products in these brand's ecosystems, they make for good alternatives; however, the Samsung ultimately gives the most cinematic experience of the bunch.

also worth noting that if you have access to the good guys commercial site - it's $1247 which you can click and collect. I had issues with one of the rears of my first set and being able to take it back to the store made it easy to deal with

    • -2

But but but 5.1 is better for reasons!

  • For comparison, this is $1439.10 on the Samsung education store, and $1599 at jb hifi.

  • Hope that they have the newer batch which fixed the connection drop out.

  • Looking at the Q930B would this be worth the additional $300?

    • probably not worth the extra tbh

the only differences are that the sub on the 930 is the one from last years q950a (which still gets good reviews) and the rear speakers don't have side facing speakers (which you probably wouldn't really notice).

It is quite interesting as to how much more affordable this is than the price they sell it for in the US.

Best Buy in US is largest electronics retailer with online and Brick and mortar - https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung-hw-q990b-za-11-1-4ch-so…
$1700 USD (on sale) + like average of 7% sales tax = $1819 USD = $2636 AUD. So it's like 50% of the price in the US?

But then you see how much cheaper separate stereo components like receivers are in the US versus here. Soundbars like 1/2 price of the US. Receivers here like 2x price in US.

    • yeah its crazy. for some reason, the american models dont have casting support either, but we do. so its heaps cheaper and has an additional feature!

so if you compare the 990b to the sonos arc (plus sub + rears) or the bose 900 (plus sub + rears) - you're looking at a minimu of $2000AUD.

    • Very true, it definitely tips the math in favour of soundbars here more so than other markets. I have a receiver and nice big speakers and love them, but if you are doing an apples to apples comparison of brand new soundbar vs brand new separate system then soundbars are much cheaper here in Aus.

  • I have the Q700as and happy with it. But this is great.

Still waiting for the rears to go down SWA-9500S/XY

Does anybody know if there in stock and how much they are in EPP? Theyre still so expensive!

If you mainly stream your movies make sure youre tv has earc or majority of those sound channels not gonna work

  • I have the previous version Q90R and absolutely love it. Bought it for $1140 back in 2019. The only thing i dislike is the lack of NFC. BT connection takes a few seconds but not really a major pain.

  • Damn that's a great price. I recently paid about $1500 from JB.

  • +1

I ordered yesterday and was told it won't be in stock for 6 weeks

    • This is their standard M.O.

Read the reviews on the stores. No chance it will only be 6 weeks.

  • Sub $1000 is my buy in

  • I tried JB Hifi price match and they said they can bring it down to 1500

    • I got price matched via online chat. In stock in nearby jb. Very tempting, the only question mark is if we will get the July (and beyond?) manufacturing date which fix the rear speaker drop out.

      • Yep, the amount of comments on reviews about the rear speaker dropping out is insane. Do you know if we can distinguish the unit that was produced after july? Silly question but would there be a manufacture date or a different model number that would help?

        • Some have reported seeing the manufacturing date on the back of the soundbar, above the words "Made in <country of manufacture>", while others have have not been able to find it without contacting Samsung Customer Care.

  • Done. Thanks!

    • Matched at JBs and should be delivered by Monday. Can't wait!

      • Would be curious to see the manufacturing date

      • Do let us know if you're experiencing disconnections on your next Q990B.

        • Sure. Surely this would come under warranty??

          • @Thiefsie: Yeah but the hassle explaining, arguing, returning and probably taking care of the boxes/rubbish…. It's a pain

            • @Bargain-er: True Dat.

              • @Thiefsie: TBH, jb online sales rep kinda crap…. I had it price matched last night but had a second thot. I want to go for it today and sales said no PM since it's on sale….

                • @Bargain-er: Yeh well they couldn't accept my admittedly sh*tty gift cards (from CC points) called the 'Ultimate Card' over the phone, and the transactions don't work online as you can't split payments across multiple cards.

JB sales guy on phone from my local said they'd 'probably' honour the pricematch today but I wasn't keen to test it so just bought with my CC so as not to miss out.

Still got a bunch of gift cards left which are overly difficult to spend… Not really JBs fault.

                  • @Thiefsie: I got my price match but…. can't tell manufacturing date for sure lol…. I could drive to the store (15 mins away) but dunno if it s a waste of time or not. Do u know which store ur stock is coming from? Thanks

                    • @Bargain-er: Do you think they're going to let you open up the box to check the manufacturing date and then not purchase if the date isn't to your liking?

                      • @fring: Don't think so at all. What i meant with "waste of time" is there s a chance we got the old batch. However, i called the store they said no stock regardless the website and chat said there are 2 in stock. Lazy sales guy, didn't even check.

                    • @Bargain-er: Shipping info is from Taylors Lakes

                      • @Thiefsie: Wish you all the best. I may just wait for the next batch since I hate to do exchange.

                        • @Bargain-er: I haven't looked at the batch etc. on my bar but the rear left does drop out a little bit. If I'm honest I suspect this is a wifi congestion issue, across the board. I'm going to fiddle with it a bit first and also update the firmware before coming to any solid conclusions about warranty claim or not. If I have to, no big deal.

                          • @Thiefsie: That's unfortunate. Hopefully it's just a wifi congestion issue and not a hardware fault with the wireless transmitters.

                          • @Thiefsie: Yea hopefully just a wifi congestion. I found my mesh modem which is located next to the modem is very slow compared to the other mesh unit. I will test by disconnecting the soundbar if it is really the problem…

                            • @Bargain-er: Are you having any problems with the wireless connections dropping out?

          • @Thiefsie: Hi mate, i somehow found a stock in jb hifi Preston n purchased it in-store. It's made in Vietnam but no manufacturer date in soundbar I could see. The box had RDD: 22 Aug 2022. Not sure what it means. Haven't set it up yet. Thanks

            • @Bargain-er: Does anyone know how the soundbar communicates to the satellites? Is it standard 2.4Ghz wifi or something else like bluetooth?

I suspect the ongoing issue is 2.4GHz congestion in all the problems people seem to be having, and with mine. This is pure conjecture of course however. Tilting the satellite is enough to regain connection which is what I find odd.
Seems to not be dropping out for me much now at all so the connections may have settled down.
If there were a way to change the wifi channel or the like that would be handy as I'm not sure how good the auto-setup of the hardware is.
Maybe the hardware revision fixes up a weak transmitter/receiver or something? It does seem odd that it either is the rear left or subwoofer that most people seem to complain about.

My woofer hasn't failed at all but it is directly under the soundbar (however in a cabinet) so not far to go.

I haven't been home early enough in the day (kids in bed when I can muck around with the system so far) to blast the sound but I'm impressed with the sound quality down low. At low volumes you get a good surround bubble and still get bass with super clear dialogue. Again, this is without even running the calibration so it's only going to get better I presume.

Frankly as I haven't upgraded my audio in a good decade or so I'm just impressed with the ease of it all and lack of wires and lack of receiver. Otherwise my opinion is a bit lacking as I haven't compared them to much else in the market.

My only (minor) complaint is there's no headphone jack in the bar. I can connect headphones via bluetooth to the TV but the quality just isn't quite as good as wired of course.

              • @Thiefsie: Have you tried using a WiFi Analyser app on your phone to detect the wifi signal from your soundbar/satellites?

                • +1

@fring: According to a comment (by Clemi) on this video:

                  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qlcTREHsvC0

The Q990B "uses 5.8 GHz Wifi and NOT Bluetooth to connect the speakers to the main unit".

                  • @fring: OK interesting. If that's the case I wonder if 2.4GHz can cause interference?

I always sort of assumed wi-fi apps are a bit hokey but might think about that. Is there any good free one you recommend for iOS as I might give that a shot and see if anything is telling.

              • @Thiefsie: Did you manage to fix your disconn issue? Thanks

                • @Bargain-er: Generally yes - I haven't noticed it dropping out and I check it when I can be bothered looking for that a solid blue light - haven't noticed it flickering for a good week.
So apart from when I first plugged it in and was mucking around - I haven't been aware of any drop outs.

I'm not using the soundbar all night every night however so…

I reckon the issue is generally wi-fi congestion that people are having with their homes and the bar eventually figures out a better channel to run on?

My main issue now is that the TV CEC every now and then seems to lose connection or the eArc breaks down and the bar doesn't seem to turn on. Happened a few times now. More frustrating for my family who can't fix it without my help. Could be a TV issue as opposed to soundbar but I'll never know. Got a Sony A95k so it doesn't get any newer than either of these devices…

I'm more concerned there isn't an easy way to calibrate the whole system, rather than it appearing to do it over time with the Auto-EQ system. I haven't run it properly yet. Found the info per here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Soundbars/comments/vjha98/suggestio…

The manual and phone app are both pretty rubbish I must say.

                  • @Thiefsie: Thanks for the tip. Yea, the remote looks and feels cheap too. Having said that I'm happy with the sound quality. Big step up from my previous bar. Just not yet tested atmos content :)

Anyone have rear speaker stands they'd recommend (and won't break the bank)?

    • +1

Would be interested as well :)

  • Tried to price match with JB Chat. Declined as they've contacted store from deal and said they have no stock for 4-6 weeks

    • Same

    • Ring a JB near you that has stock. Online chat denied me for the same reason and the guy in store was more than happy to match price and reserve stock. Not taking chances, I picked up yesterday with gift cards from woolies. Effectively $1118

      • That is awesome. Did you get 10 x $100 gc at woolies? Thanks

        • Yes and paid the balance on card. Woolies points are instantly in your account and ready to convert to QFF points if you are inclined to do so.

          • @Swanson approved: Ah nice… I didn't have great experience with multiple physical gc. I bought jb hifi egc from shopback 😜 Thanks. Enjoy the soundbar.

  • If anyone can share where we can find manufacturing date that would be awesome. I found the Made in Vietnam and S/N but no info re manufacturing date. Only RDD date in the packaging (not soundbar). Thanks

  • This or Sony HT-A7000 with SA-S5 subwoofer and SA-RS5 rear speakers? Total cost around 3500k but is it worth it compare to Q990B?

    • +2

To be honest. You don't need to spend 3500 for a soundbar system. This will get you all that you ll ever need and plus some. There might be a little difference in sound quality and sound stage etc but definitely not 3x the cost. It's minor at best.
Many people go with Sonos for the brand name but the 2022 model is actually better than sonos. I havnt had any experience with the A7000 but if you look at the blogs this is infact a better overall performer.

    • +1

You'd be mad to spend double (or more) to get that somewhat incremental upgrade.

I can't justify that $$$ so have got the Q990B via this deal for mt A95K which shoudl be arriving tomorrow from the GG price error.

Bear in mind that in the US the Q990B is priced much higher comparitively to here and still comes out on top or at least equivalent in a lot of comparison reviews.

      From RTINGS:

"The Samsung HW-Q990B is better than the Sony HT-A7000 with Speakers + Bass Module. The Samsung has better surround sound and Dolby Atmos performances, meaning that sound effects are more clear and present in the mix. It gets louder with less compression at max volume, too. With its graphic EQ, it's more customizable, too. The Sony is still a very premium bar with a versatile performance."
      https://www.rtings.com/soundbar/tools/compare/sony-ht-a7000-…

      • Ok thanks for your reply.
The RTINGs rating is on older speakers, the new ones are RS5 battery one which makes it very easy to mount and use without any additional wires.
But I get your point, that feature alone probably doesn't justify this price.

If you're going to be spending $3500, you might also want to consider the Harman Kardon Citation Multibeam 1100:

    • Harman Kardon Citation Multibeam 1100: $1200
    • Harman Kardon Citation Surround Sound Wireless Speakers: $800
    • Harman Kardon Citation 10" Wireless Subwoofer: $1000

    https://www.avforums.com/threads/news-harman-kardon-unveils-…

Sennheiser is also due to announce a new subwoofer on September 1st. Somebody on avsforum found what might be the soundbar in question:

    https://www.avsforum.com/threads/sennheiser-ambeo-2.3252368/

  • Got it priced matched at JB-Hifi for $1278 from https://www.billyguyatts.com.au/samsung-11-1-4ch-q-series-so…

  • I'm looking at getting the Q930B as it's in budget with this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/721720#comment-12611861

Does anyone know if it has the same rear speaker dropout issues as the Q990B?
