Since the Hiver 5% cashback is about to be OzBargained from 7 Sept (aka no more cashback :/), it’s time to look for other alternatives while also waiting for upsized cashbacks on gift cards

Thanks, another benefit over dodgy ING

      • when do you actually get the rebate money? is it instant or at the end of the month?

        • it's instant, for example you spend $100 debit, there will be $2 credit cashback following that transaction, but most recent transactions will be pending, most likely a banking thing, but in few days it should be clear.

            @foxmulder:

for example you spend $100 debit

If you did that you will get zilch from HSBC.
Must be <$100 tap and pay (and no least cost routing to EFTPOS by the merchant).

  • can you transfer 2K between HSBC accounts for this deal to be valid?

    • Yes.

  • More banks should be like this

  • just found out I actually have HSBC bank account with 10c in there lol.. but my Visa debit card expires next month.
I assume they will send a new debit card soon, without me having to chase them, right?

    • +1

Yes, assuming you still in the same address as one set in your account.

  • Does this work with online purchase or just in store purchases?

    • +2

In store only - as in description "tap and pay".

Wish I could tap my computer and pay XD

@capslock janitor: If you mean can you add your card to Google Pay Wallet - then yes you can do that and you WILL get the 2% cashback. I do it.
(Its the only way I can get the cashback in Coles/Express/Kmart as they can't make Google Pay Wallet route it through eftpos - though I know some people say they get it with their card in Coles/Kmart but I don't!)

    Something to be aware of:

HSBC invests in companies linked to deforestation, fossil fuels, arms & military supply, nuclear weapons and the Myanmar military. It has the worst gender pay gap of any UK bank, pays excessive compensation to executives, and scored a worst rating for Tax Conduct.

    • That sucks but until other banks offer paywave cashbacks, we're staying with HSBC

I deposit 2k on sept 9, does it mean this 2% cashback for my account is until 9 oct? Or only until 30 sep?
    Anyone knows how it works?

    • +4

From their term pdf: You will be eligible to earn cashback from the time of eligible deposit is made until the end of last business day of the following calendar month.

In your case, it means you will earn cashbacks till 31 October.

      • Thank you. Struggled to find info on their website.

        • No problem. I need to know this myself. I used to transfer $2k at the beginning of each month, now I only need to do every other month.

You can see the status in the app, under Everyday Extras.

Be warn, it's the most unfriendly, horrible designed bank app.

            Worst app experience ever.

When you are viewing your list of accounts (main screen), you would think tapping once on the account cell would take you straight to the detail view.

In some eateries - cafes, pubs etc, you have to order from a QR code and paid at your table. If you use this card to pay, you won't get cashback be because not a "tap" payment.

  • I've got a free credit card that gives me 1% in rewards. I don't think you can get much better for a free card.
You can add a bit of interest offsetting mortgages and you may get that a bit over 1%
    2% is still better.

  • I read that you can transfer money internationally for $8 with this account?

So it is like Wise/Up in that respect, except much cheaper? So I can transfer from my HSBC Australian Bank account to a family member in Europe within the app for only $8, or is there some sort of catch?

    • +2

oh interesting question, I assumed wise would still be cheaper for me when I need to do it next but hadn't crunched the numbers.
It will of course depend on how much you send as $8 is a lot compared to wise ~50c+small %margin (varies by currency).

HSBC do allow you to keep 9 popular foreign balances in your account - but much less choice than wise.
HSBC use Visa (which isn't usually as good a rate as Mastercard if you have an old Wise card but wise now use visa too).
HSBC T&C's indicate that they add on an extra margin if you send it in anything other than the 9 currencies they support you holding in your account, and to ALL transactions on a weekend/holiday so you won't get a real/live rate like you do with wise.

But, if you are sending a large amount ($1000's) then potentially yes you could save a lot with HSBC on a weekday for certain currencies.
Edit to make clear: HSBC $8 fixed fee doesn't mean that they have the best exchange rate, and on a large transaction that could cost you a lot more than wise so you really do need to check each on the day you want to send it to see what each are offering in total.

  • hi does anyone know if we get into trouble with hsbc if we split transactions to $99 and a few seconds later pay another $99 on same card?
how many times can we do this without getting a warning?

    • It does breach the terms, but I have never heard of anyone being pulled up for this specific breach.

Cashbacks will work the soonest $2k is deposited and it will last 2 months then on. I usually do it early rather than later. Say beginning of May, if deposited is made, cashbacks will work for May and June

      • Yeah it looks fine now. I deposited $2k for the following month and it boosted 2 months worth. I just made a purchase and it's all good now.

The HSBC customer service person told me the wrong thing. She actually said I wouldn't be able to get any cashback for May.
