External vs NAS. Current deal vs expired. Maybe it's me, but I don't get what you're trying to say…

He's trying to say that this deal vs that previous deal isn't that great comparatively, I thought it was obvious, but I guess some people need everything explained to them.

        • LOL, OK then…

          • +2

@Kapitoshka: especially for price per tb, that external can be shucked and also be used as a nas drive.

            • @garetz: Hyundai Getz can also be turbocharged and raced. No need to compare things that aren't the same. Just sayin'.

I get what cloudie was trying to say but not sure why it needs to be said. just like i've never seen people compared McMuffin to a quarter pouder.

You can take a gamble on this if you think its better value.

$272.80 for same drive with 14 in stock

      • Seems risky

      • yeah just look at that seller.
i am not put all my data in that.

  • is this a helium drive?

  • Currently have a 7 x 10TB drives in a Synology NAS (SHR). If I replace each failed drive over time with 12 or 16TB drives, will that eventually get me to 7 x 16TB working efficiently? Or would I be losing out somehow?

    • +2

Can you even replace drives with different size drives in a Synology nas?

      • +5

Sure can - SHR is great for replacing drives piecemeal

      https://www.synology.com/en-au/support/RAID_calculator?hdds=

with that amount of drives you will have unused space until you replace at least 2.

    • +1

In shr, largest drive doesn't count towards the usable storage space (assuming 1 drive redundancy). So you would eventually get 6 x 16. You incidentally won't notice any increase the first time you replace a hard drive either (so 6x10 and 1x16 gives the same space as 7x10).

I have this drive in my NAS and GOD it makes soo much noise compared to the WD drive that I used to have. Even with the NAS in my garage I can hear it in the room above at night.

    • Thanks for the info, this is a deal breaker for me.

      • I weirdly have the complete opposite situation. WD red is noticeably louder than my Iron wolves.

        • Yeh I have one of these in the PC in my bedroom, it's not silent but not particularly loud either.

          • @AEKaBeer: Yeah, you can hear it, but it isn’t a problem. My partner sucks at sleeping if the tiniest sound is around and the pc is maybe 4m from the bedroom door in the living room. She’s never once mentioned it.

Check your mounting isn't causing weird vibrations when the drive torques. I found an attachment in the case was loose and allowed the drives to rattle the metal rather than the drive making the sound. Used some Wiring Harness Cloth Tape to fill the gap.

    • Some drives support Acoustic Management - you can significantly reduce the noise at the expense of some performance.

But this just sounds like a mounting issue - is your NAS sitting on a wooden surface ? Try it on the garage floor, try rubber dampers, tighten all the screws, etc.

      • My NAS is in a 6U cabinet, I double checked all the screws . It's definitely the HDD noise and not mounting issue or maybe it's something to do with QNAP TS 464.

        • Try it on the garage floor … the cabinet is probably resonating like a giant speaker !

  • Would advise caution ordering internal hard drives from Amazon as they tend to package poorly.

    • You still need to thoroughly test a new drive anyway, even if it was packaged amazingly well.

So if it does have any issues, you'll find them and Amazon will refund you.

Not really a good price as when you check out, It will include import tax so essentially it will be the same price as local. Very minor differences..

    • Not sure why got down voted but weird flex.
