My DJI drone purchased hardly used at all with so many restrictions, furthest it flew was around my rooftop of my house!

    • +9

This is my biggest concern. I end up buying it at some amazing discount and then won’t have time or location to fly it. It will just end up gathering dust like 1000 other things I bought because of OZB. 🤣

    • +2

The restrictions are in place for the DJI FPV drone which disallows take off in urban areas (or if you disable GPS or internet).

I wasn't aware similar restrictions are in place for the DJI Mini 3 Pro or the Mini 2.

My DJI drone purchased hardly used at all with so many restrictions

Which DJI model do you have?

    • There are a lot of things to keep in mind and plenty of places you technically are not meant to fly but really unless you are being a nuisance or are doing something dangerous it's very unlikely you will get in trouble.

    • That's the reason why I haven't upgraded my 2016 DJI Phantom 3 Advanced. I have filmed a number of locations, so now I can't find anywhere that is not too far I can fly my drone. Just too many restrictions in and around Sydney, not worth for me investing on a new drone.

    • +1

This is a dumb take, most drones you can fly most places as long it isn't too crowed or nearby an airport. And have to be under 120m. The sub 250drones are even better as you don't have to worry about airport restrictions and helipad restrictions. Casa which is the governing body for drones have a road map of how they want to ease restrictions in the coming years. My only qualm would be flying in national parks an issue as they require 10 days notice

      • 100% agreed
I've had mine for 3 months now and have used it about 25 times already
Everything from capturing sunrise/sunsets above my place, to trips up the road to the local park and walking tracks

        A great buy!

        • Yeah they're amazing, like you have understand it from the point of the restrictions. Like its a small aircraft in anyone's hands but as long as your careful and follow the rules there's many places to go fly them

          • +1

@sickfvckadam: There are so many apps that make it easy too! I have one that tells me if the weather is suitable for my drone, another that uses my gps to tell me if I’m in the clear to fly or if there’s any restrictions. Any amount of effort needed is sorted by those couple apps.

Open Sky and UAV Forecast if anyone is interested.

      • +2

you can fly most places as long it isn't too crowed

You need to keep 30 metres from people, buildings and vehicles. This is very restrictive if you live in a city. On top of that, Parks Victoria has banned drones in all national parks, state parks, etc.

Much easier in QLD or WA though.

        • I would be interested in how Parks Victoria go policing that. From my understanding that have no authority over the airspace (responsibility lies with CASA). They can only get you from launching the drone from the ground.

I have a remote pilot licence, and was told by the training organising that if you launch from the roof of your vehicle, and you are legally within the park otherwise, there is not anything they can legally do.

          • +1

            @metallum:

I would be interested in how Parks Victoria go policing that.

Also, I would be interested to know the exact Act or the Regulation thereafter that empowers them to be the Responsible Authority for enforcement (which otherwise is solely the jurisdiction of CASA).

            • @DoctorCalculon: They’re actually just prohibiting you from operating a drone from the park, the same way they prohibit you from camping in random spots etc. My local council also bans even possessing a drone in any park/public open space under a by-law, basically the same legislation that lets them fine you for keeping you bins out too long….. or possessing hunting equipment in their reserves …(coincidentally the next council over is fine with it, while my previous council set times and specific parks that were allowed)

Assumedly if you launched from outside the park they’d have no ability to do anything. But given you’d need to keep line of sight etc that puts most parts of most larger state parks beyond limits. Not sure if they’re also using the ‘possessing’ rather than just operating restriction, but it’s probably the same legislation they use to stop you camping there etc.

Unlike CASA it’s probably a straight fine rather than a potential criminal conviction, but that depends on if damage is caused I guess.

      • Is it really a dumb take? Because I am interested to hear otherwise.

Are you sure you aren't performing "workarounds" to defeat the GPS/Mobile Data block? I don't know such as deliberately not updating the firmware for a long time etc.

    • -1

You’re doing it wrong then lol, there are apps you can get that tell you where you can and can’t fly, with something like the mini you can fly it almost anywhere without much issue.

      • -2

The apps only tell you about airports. There are heaps more restrictions that the app won't know about

        • +2

They literally do not tell you just about airports. The opensky app which is free says airports, manned and unmanned helipads, national parks, marine park areas, gov army bases and etc.

        • -1

          Nope, the app covers everything.

          • @doobey1231: Worth noting OpenSky at least doesn’t let you know whether or not your local council allows launching from their parks etc or not. Or if you’re breaking other council rules for which they’re a law unto themselves and vary wildly from council to council.

            • -2

@[Deactivated]: In that extremely niche situation, you would be up in the air and back on the ground long before council rangers would come along. In any case I would consider this situation to be one to beg for forgiveness rather than ask for permission.. Common sense should apply and as long as you use it I highly doubt you will have any problems with council, also not saying they don't exist, but I have never seen a park that restricts drone usage actively.

              • -1

@doobey1231: The council by-law actually prohibits even possessing a drone in a park/public open space much less using it, so they can still fine you on the ground… sure, it’s probably not a huge risk, but it exists.

                • -1

@[Deactivated]: There is more than one council, why are you acting like one councils bylaw exists for all councils? That’s not how it works.

                  • -1

@doobey1231: I’m not? In fact I’ve explicitly stated that some allow it.

The point was, whether they do or not isn’t in open sky or as far as I’m aware, any app.

Of the three councils I checked, one bans drone possession completely in parks, one allows it only at certain times and parks, and one just refers to CASA rules.

              • +1

@doobey1231: What? I have seen so many local council parks with the sign saying remote flying aircrafts are banned.

                • -1

@edfoo: not saying they don’t exist

                  • +1

@doobey1231: Then you obviously haven't been to many parks.

                  • -1

@doobey1231: Your comment said the apps will tell you, this isn’t correct, you also need to check council rules if you want to have a drone on council property.

                    • -1

@[Deactivated]: Don't lie, the apps do tell you, theres just one extra thing you need to check, which in my several years of droning, has never been an issue. I have already addressed your concerns about council rules, time to drop it and find another gotchya to complain about.

                      • @doobey1231: My whole thing was that there was one extra thing you need to check, you disagreed, now seemingly you both disagree and agree in the one sentence? What specifically did I lie about?

This isn't a 'gotcha' it's just something people need to be aware about. Hence the phrase I used 'worth noting.

You can absolutely not have an issue with it if your council allows it, and there's plenty of rules people break for decades without consequence, anecdotes are irrelevant.

You specifically said "Nope, the app covers everything." which, I had given you the benefit of the doubt you were ignorant about, but now, I'm the one complaining?

Unequivocally the fact that "the app covers everything", you having been informed is incorrect, is a lie. Stop misleading people in a way that could get them fined, the last thing we need is to turn people away from the hobby with an easily avoided fine.

    • furthest it flew was around my rooftop of my house

and even that was technically illegal :(

  • Good price - I figured I'd snagged a pretty good bargain back at the start for July for just under $1169 delivered

They don't do Gift Card either if I recall.

    Not available for delivery?

    • JB commercial has them for delivery, I also had the same issue with TGG not being available for delivery.

  • In the past I have been able to get TTG instore to price match with their Commercial listings.

    • I tried and they said no. Was for a bambino plus (not this one)

    • I’ve done it with JB hifi’s phone price matching a couple of times

  • Argh just got mine on Friday from TGG for $1299, do they refund the difference?

    • Buy another and return using the old receipt

  • +1

Thanks for sharing. I bought 1!

Same price in JB commercial https://www.jbcommercial.com.au/corporatebenefits/product/DJ…

  • This only has one battery in the box right?

Is it worth getting the Fly More or the Fly More Plus kit?

    • One of the 2, def. I just got a mini 2 - the batteries don't last long

    • At bare minimum it’s worth getting a couple more batteries. I got a flymore kit for my mini 2 and get 1.5 hr flight time. It also comes with a 3 battery charge kit so you can just plug them all into one USB port.

  • Definitely get a fly more pack

  • Whats the charge duty cycle? My previous DHI was only rated for 150x charges and now despite showing 100% last less than 2mins.

  • +1

    No longer available…

  • Can anyone help me buying this via their membership?
I don't have commercial membership or a company.
    Thank you so much.
