Breville Cafe Roma 15 Bar Espresso Machine Doymane -- $98

200

Rated number one in our consumer magazine, a few years back. Can be found often at Target/BigW for around the $150 mark, so $98 is a good price for a solid and good performer. (best online price I found secondsworld $115)

I have owned 2 of these for 9 years. I do use it a few times each day and then more when friends arrive, so it does have a lot of use. The current unit has been going for 4 years, so I bought this third unit as a backup.

The product details, copied…

Features: -Stainless steel design -15 bar Italian Thermoblock pump -Advanced Crema System -Extra large cup warming plate -Swivel steam wand -Removable 1.2 litre water tank -External water window -Removable drip tray and grid -Bonus frothing jug

  • A decent machine for the price. We have one and use it daily, no issues after 2 years of use.

A coffe snob would look down their nose at it but we're not all rich/stupid enough to buy a proper cafe style one.

Why is it stupid to buy a good coffee machine if you like good coffee?

    • +2

nothing stupid about buying a good coffee machine.

Diminishing returns for your dollar with machines, particulary the fully automated ones. Ive always found the more someone spends on a machine the more they have to justify it by talking about it. All these types of machines are typically very similar under the hood but somehow vary in price by ridiculous amounts of cash.

Decent grinder makes much more of a difference imho than a fancy machine . Next step is knowing your machine. Swapping your pressurised filter for a normal one is handy too (you really need a proper grinder then but it makes a huge difference). Thats a Good tip for this machine.

Then you will be well one your way to learning the fine art of pouring hot water through ground beans. Dont let anyone convince you it's serious business though.

          nice reply ;)

          tell me more!

        • Swapping your pressurised filter for a normal one is handy too

Does anyone know of a good price for the non pressurised baskets?

        • Its actually a pain to find one these days. I've no idea what the part number is you may be looking for. Google away I guess.

Anyway, take a look at the filter your machine came with. Usually you will find only a few tiny holes in the bottom, look at the top and notice there are stacks. This kind if filter will give you crema most every time but coffee nobs will tell you it's not real crema and that it changes the taste if your shot. They also help badly ground coffee be poured slower than usual.

So a non pressurised filter is more basic, lots of holes top and bottom. To get crema and a nice long pour the grind size is really important . It's alleged to taste better too. Does it? Dunno. Fun to experiment though.

I ordered my single wall Breville filter here: http://www.belstar-electrics.co.uk/products/MS%252d0907163-%…

With shipping to Australia it came to £10.90.

Can't say if it fits this machine, I've got a sunbeam em5900 myself.

Here's a different explanation to the filter and holder that Breville use on the Cafe Roma: http://tlaloc.customer.netspace.net.au/Cafe%20Roma/cafe%20ro…

includes instructions for using caustic soda to clean accumulated coffee granules from the basket.

      • Believe it or not but some people mod their grinders to get a finer grind. Did this with bevilles burr grinder and had great results .

        • Did the same with the BCG450. Works a treat. Check out coffee snobs for DIY.

The sumbeam one at BigW -$30. You have to spend $50 to get free shipping with them at the moment though.

Perhaps someone who has mod'ed this machine with the non pressurised baskets can tell you whether this grinder is up to the task.

I have a slightly older version of this. Bought it because Choice rated it first in a blind test against other manual machines, but they also added it as a wildcard in a blind test against all the $2k fully automatic ones.

    It won that too.

Great machine which I've used 1-3 times daily for the last 3 years with no issues.

      ditto,

except I have the Bar Italia.

It goes and goes, 800+ coffees and only one vinegar clean out needed.

  • yep we have owned this machine and it makes a damn good cuppa compared to some friends $$$$$ machines!!!!
wow for $100 worth getting one for a back up!

"Swapping your pressurised filter for a normal one is handy too"
would like to know a bit more about this……..

    • See above , you mileage may vary.

      • Your even, stupid iPhone.

  • If this is the same one (which I think it is) you save $3 on shipping:

    (For shipping to Melbourne anyway…)

  • For those who own it, will a normal coffee mug fit under it?

    • yeah, there is a removable drip tray.

remove it and your mug will fit.

Protip - before pouring a shot with this machine make sure you let some water through first. If you don't you'll blast a hole in the grinds (the puck for knobs) and bugger your crema too.

  • Went to HN Knox and they had the machine with red $98 special sign on it. Talked to the salesgirl and she brought me a new unit from the back the store for me.

  • just got one. will try it this weekend

  • This may be run-out pricing as it looks like Breville have discontinued this model.

  • Very good coffee from this machine. I'm making my third cuppa now.

  • Thanks OP! picked one of these babies up at lunchtime, there are 2 left on the floor at QV Domayne, VIC.

  • Very thankful for all the comments on CS and here re grinding the coffee finer for this machine - coffee yesterday was decidedly average, greatly improved today after following this tip.
