cheaper cleaner is dishwasher tabs or vinegar & baking soda

The vinegar and baking soda myth just won’t give up.

      • +2

It's not a myth, they work in many uses even vinegar alone, but certainly there are too many generalizations and the like out there which ends up as misinformation.

Have not tried a dishwasher tablet. Works just the same? Just drop in and put on hot cycle?

      • +3

You won’t be gaining much from a dishwasher tablet as the machine is already seeing alkaline detergents on the daily. I’d be leaning toward something acidic to combat buildup of soaps, calcium, scum etc. Some vinegar on a hot wash would be a good start.

        • Doesn't filling the machine with salt help with some of that, when it hits the rinse cycle?

I have been a service tech for 35 years, the best thing to clean your machine is a half to 1 cup of Epson Salts, let it soak overnight & all the crap will wash away

    • Question on this. Would you fill your front loader with water yourself? Is there perhaps a video you could direct me to for this method? Cheers!

Question on this. Would you fill your front loader with water yourself?

Start the cycle, let the front loader fill, pause the cycle till morning.

        • +1

Water level is usually very low on front loaders. And it won’t rotate during pause, that mean more than 80% of the drum is not soaked in liquor.

          • @mrgeckoz: Start/stop the cycle a few times to rotate the drum then if you feel the need. But I feel most of the 'junk' will be at the bottom catchment area, more so than the drum itself. As once its stopped, water heads south, so will pool in the bottom.

            • @JimmyF: That's pain in the neck!
You're right about bottom catchment area will have deposits and biofilm but also on the outer drum, which needs frequent rotation + chemical + temperature to be able to remove.

    • Empty the value and bottom thingy every two months

    • I suspect you mean sodium carbonate (washing soda). but still I’d lean toward an acid.

The product posted here is just citric acid.
