New Apple TV with $20 iTunes Card for $109 at DSE

620

This is my first ozbargain post. Been eyeing for the latest Apple TV. Found this on the recent Dick's Brochure valid from 12-June till 2-July 2012. JB Hi-Fi sells at $107 where Dicks sells at $109 but include a $20 iTunes Card. Making it Nett at $89 for the new Apple TV. It's a decent catch if you are someone who buy stuff on iTunes. Enjoy.

  • very confusing title there

  • Sounds like a good deal, perhaps change the title to "New Apple TV with $20 iTunes Card for $109 at DSE"

    • -3

take away the word 'new'. it is assumed new unless specified otherwise

      • +1

The word 'New' is referring to the new third generation Apple TV that was released in March, not the condition of the product.

  • +1

    Amended the Title. Thanks guys.

  • Id be waiting to see if Apple announces 3rd party app support for Apple TV at WWDC.

  • +3

unfortunately the Apple TV still isnt as good as other Media devices with its format support

    • +5

Is once it's jailbroken and XBMC is installed. But this one can't be jailbroken.

      • can't yet.

        • Most likely never.

  • -6

I'm not negging your post or deal, I'm giving the product negative feedback.
For those of you who are wanting, or looking into buying one of these: don't.
Nothing but trouble - often, it'll restart, for no reason, and then you'll have to sign back into your Apple account, which, believe me, takes ages with the remote they give you. Secondly, the main feature that draws this product away from the other media players on the market is 'AirPlay' which is only compatible with iPhone 4/4S and iPad 3rd gen, and is still buggy. Sometimes, iPad / iPhone won't detect the Apple TV Device, and then you have to either reset the Apple TV and set up everything again, or just choose to not use it. On the odd occasion that the AirPlay feature would work, it was extremely laggy and would freeze quite a bit - much different from the way it was marketed.
Finally, with 'Remote Play' from your PC or Mac, I received a different connection problem every time I tried to use it, and eventually reached the end of my tether, and took it back for a full refund - I wouldn't settle for less.
Yes, Apple TV is a good concept, but is very buggy and in later models, hopefully becomes functional.

    • +8

……fine for me and millions of others, just saying.

    • +6

Yes cause I am sure Apple are reading your comment.

Sorry but I think your neg is grossly unfair to the OP. The product works (and works well) for many.

      • +9

Well then maybe it was just me that had a bad experience.
And I clearly stated that "I am not negging your post of deal, I'm giving the product negative feedback"
I didn't mean to annoy, harm or disturb the OP.

        • And did you get your full refund??

        • +2

Yes, was I being too subtle when I said "I wouldn't settle for less" ?

        • Thanks -

To me thats a pretty good outcome in the end. And I guess it would be hard to settle for more, of course that's not from your end :)

    • +1

Mate, I think you were lucky enough to grab the bad egg. If you experiencing similar issues (may not just AppleTV), try check your WIFI interference. Often that's the reason for your connectivity issue. If you have the right devices, set them at 5GHz to move away from standard WIFI and bluetooth which operates at 2.4GHz. Don't forget your neighbours are using WIFI too…

    • +1

I have an iPhone 3GS and Airplay works seamlessly for me. I think that the crazy frog is right, because it sounds like you are having troubles with your wifi connection. I recommend buying a new router.

      • +1

Same here. Even found it works perfectly with my Xperia play using an app called AppleTV Media. Seriously thinking about ditching the iPhone now.

    • It sounds like you were experiencing issues with your wireless network, more than anything. I often stream movies from my computer to my second generation Apple TV, which is at the end of my house that doesn't have the strongest Wi-Fi connection. No issues.

    • Wow, seriously? Unpublish all that, just because of one word: 'idiot'? If you didn't want me flinging insults around with wild abandon, as I so clearly was, why not just edit it out of the post? An actual discussion was taking place, not only specific to this deal, but also applicable to a lot of the general OzBargain environment, and you just remove all of it because of one word?

  • Is this worth getting if you don't buy things on iTunes?

    • -1

Trust me, you will want to use it on some cool software that works with your AppleTV like AirVideo and Garage Band.

    • +1

It is worth getting if you use iTunes and store all of your movies there, you don't have to purchase content from iTunes if you don't want to.

      • But in storing your movies there requires you to purchase them right?

        • +1

It should be possible to store your movies there by saving them in the relevant iTunes directory, in the correct file format. I own an iMac, and rip my DVDs using Handbrake and use a program called iFlicks, which adds metadata to the movies and adds them to iTunes.

        • -1

yes, you must buy or rent movies in itunes..

        • +1

You can add your own movies to iTunes.

        • +1

If you have iphone or ipad, just use Air Video or Ace HD player to stream it from your shared storage. It will play almost any format including RMVB and other HD formats.

        • +1 for iFlicks. It's a great little program.

        • +1

          They both lags like HELL….

No iOS devices with ANY apps can play RMVB properly - "properly" means over 30fps

  • +6

id rather go for the wdtv live

  • Good deal! I just bought one last week and can vouch it works seamlessly with all my iPads and iPhones. Even taught my 5 yr old how to use it now…it just works!

I might get another one for the other TV.

  • Stack it with the 5% off $100 Woolies gift card (e.g. Entertainment Book) for another $5 off effectively, plus earn QFF points :-)

  • can this be used to do surf the web like youtube, etc?

    • i has a youtube app. check the apple website for AppleTV details. I know people use it to watch Netflix via www.unblock-us.com, all for $15 USD a month.

      • $13 dollars US actually

    • +2

WDTV Live has built in Youtube & others apps

      • hmm yeah, really having difficulty choosing between AppleTV and WDTV live….our household is pretty much all Apple (macbook, iphone, ipad), so I guess atv makes sense… and I just read you can mirror webbrowsing on your ipad to the TV, so I guess that kinda settles my previous question.

But then again I do like the flexibility of the WDTV live (apps, file formats, etc) …Cheapest I can find is $US100 delivered from amazon?

        • The beauty of the WDTV Live is that you can serve directly from any fileshare / DLNA without the need of iTunes running in the background.

If the latest AppleTV could be Jailbroken - I would purchase the AppleTV….but it cant

  • A stipud question, can I use it to view abc iview?

    • +1

Nope, unfortunately not. I recommend checking out the D-Link Boxee Box.

    • +1

I love my xbox for the same…

      • +1

The Xbox 360 can access iView and SBS on Demand, as well as Foxtel (if you are willing to pay for it). The D-Link Boxee Box is however not restricted, in the sense that you can watch video from any website, on your TV.

    • +1

Can only view ABC iView via an iPad and AirPlay with the Apple TV. Works well, but a native app on the Apple TV itself would be much, much appreciated!

    • +2

WD Live Streaming (3rd gen) supports iView, works with most file types/codecs, and handles 1080p with ease. Great value.

    • +1

Apparently this will work with your ipod/iphone:

      http://www.peterstagg.com/2010/05/from-abc-iview-to-iphone-f…

Should work straight up with AirPlay onto your Apple TV.

  • Wish I didn't have a voucher for harvey norman :(. Much better deal on the atv here!

    • Can HN price match this DSE offer? Would assume not, but it may depend on the store and if the manager is able to approve the deal.

  • Where is the best place to buy version 2 and how can one tell at purchase time? Is it clearly marked on the box?

    • Check for 1080p to confirm the newer version.

  • As you can use 'AirPlay' with this - does that mean you could have a downloaded (legally of course) movie on the iMac playing, then use AirPlay to watch it on the TV? Does anyone know if the quality would be OK doing this?

    • If its in the supported format, yes, can play it through iTunes or QuickTime Player, or through other apps on iPhone/iPad.

      Quality depends on the source.

When the JB is available Plex and XBMC work well.

  • +5

Both WD TV live and Apple TV have their advantages and disadvantages, therefore I have both.

WD tv live ($100 - $130): the new one which I have has built in wifi n, plays any format u throw at it directly from nas or pc/Mac , mkv, avi, mp4, rmvb all in 1080p no problem. It has 2 USB ports, can plug in USB hdd, and also a wireless/Bluetooth keyboard to USB port for typing.

Apple TV ($109 or $89 on this deal): can now play 1080p from iTunes store u buy or rent a movie on iTunes to play, or put mp4 files only on your pc or Mac iTunes to play from there, your computer must be on cannot play from nas. The only thing I use apple tv is for AirPlay, using my iPad I can wirelessly mirror the iPad and FaceTime calls, safari browsing, games, YouTube whatever's on the iPad is mirrored to screen, iPad 2, iPad 3 and iPhone 4S only mirroring. The older devices limited capability can send video, audio and photo but no mirroring. OSX mountain lion which is coming soon will also allow u to AirPlay mirror your Mac laptop onto apple tv.

So basically buy both and they are both efficient wdtvlive 8watts max, apple tv 6 watts, on 24/7 no sound no heat, replaces htpc. Only thing missing is PVR.

    Hope this helps

    • what is this "renting" of movies you speak of?

      • +1

On the apple tv you can rent tv shows or movies, the price varies from $0.99 for a single tv show episode all the way upto $6.99 for latest movie in 1080p. I have never tried it myself but how it works is once you start watching the video u rented it automatically deletes itself in 24 hours.

        • Some good info about renting. Thank-you

        • +1

So $24 to watch a 24 episode season, months after it airs in the US and I never get to watch it again.

Seriously they wonder why people pirate.

        • Actually just checked on itunes, apparently apple has removed the option of renting tv shows, you can only buy now. $2.99 for SD single epsiode or $3.49 for the HD version. Movies you can rent and buy the price varies.

        • So $24 to watch a 24 episode season, months after it airs in the US and I never get to watch it again.

Thank goodness for papas credit card ;)

          (Fixed for you)

  • It'll be good to install XBMC or Ubuntu TV.

    • Can't be jailbroken so unless your a wizard.

  • Grabbed one, thanks!

  • None left when I went to Carlingford store today.

  • Got one, thanks
