A few comments I read seemed keen on getting these over other ANC headphones.

It's changed and is now the same price as the previous deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/720632
Well it's now 37c less to be exact.
Not much of a % discount but $75 off a just released product is ok if you need it now.

Momentum 4 Issue: There is some negative feedback I read on the Momentum 4's worth mentioning and this is part of the reason for this post. Apparently the App and connectivity is pretty bad. It can probably be fixed in a few months with an App update but according the a few reviews I read customers returned them for this reason.
I can't remember exactly but I think they were reviews from Amazon US saying adjusting settings etc in the App would not change the setting on the headphones. Such as with EQ settings this was particularly frustrating and broken. YMMV.

  • Does these allow audio while in transparency mode?

    • They do but you have to change the setting in the app

      • Sorry for the double comment, I can't edit my first one.
You can also allow audio to play when you are in transparency mode, by tapping the right ear cup once. Two taps quickly, turns transparency mode on/off and one tap plays/pauses audio.

You can tweak it in the app though to whatever level of transparency you want, in noise cancelling mode and transparency mode. Two taps just changes the mode to the settings you make.

    • I think it is better if the headphones pause the audio when in transparency/ambient mode.

For example on a plane when someone talks to you, you want the movie to pause while you talk so you don't miss out on what happens.
Also on the street, I think a lot of people will want to "hear everything" the best they can when they need to. You might need to cross a street and listen for cars or someone might yell at you to watch out. If the music is still playing even at lower volume you will not be able to hear things clearly.

      • Yeah I have it that in transparency mode, the audio pauses.
You can have the transparency all the way up on the Momentum 4s and the audio volume doesn't seem to lower (although it is a lot cleaner without outside noise coming in). So technically you can have audio playing while in full transparency mode and just tap the right ear cup once (saving a tap like a true Ozbargainer) to pause the audio and then "hear everything".

        • I think auto pause is the best option. You say "just tap the right ear cup once" but you have to enter transparency mode first right? So that is two actions when it could be just one with auto pause.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Nah double tapping just switches between the two presets that you can set in the app.
So one preset you can have transparency up and audio playing (so just tap to pause music to hear outside noise) and the second preset can have the transparency up more if you want and auto pause the audio.

            • @Vector18: But you can set "first transparency mode preset" to auto pause and transparency on right? So that is just one tap to access it.

I have these headphones and the app is buggy at times but mostly fine.
Initially i had problems with changing the EQ settings. I tried each preset and they all sounded the same.

Turned out that having "bass boost" enabled was the reason. This option is actually it's own EQ setting and seems to override any EQ setting that is selected. Turning off "bass boost" fixes it and you can hear the difference in each EQ preset/your own.

Thanks for the advice, very tempted to pick up a pair, it's good to know that! I could see myself being baffled haha.

      • Haha no problem, it baffled me for a bit.
"Bass boost" should honestly be under the EQ presets, not as an option by itself.
It even has a description underneath it saying it's a "special EQ preset for more intense bass".

"Turned out that having "bass boost" enabled was the reason."

Good to know there is a solution for the EQ bug. Have you experienced any other bugs in App?

It is weird how these premium companies are having issues with their App's.
Another one with issues I read recently was the Yamaha L700A headphones.
Apparently if you enable this certain feature I think it was 3D sound mode, after you turn the headphones off the battery fully drains to 0% within a few hours.
So even after switching them off if you try to use them the next day they won't turn on due to low battery.
The headphones will stay in this super quick battery drain loop continously after just toggling the 3D feature one time.
At the time I read the only way to fix this was either to do a "full reset" or go through some very specific steps to turn the headphones off, then on again, disable 3D mode, turn off then on again etc.

      • I experienced another one to do with having bass boost enabled. You can create your own EQ preset in the "sound check" option on the main screen. Part of this is having music playing and you have 3 options to choose on a few different screens that give you a live preview of what each option sounds like. If bass boost is enabled, you won't be able to hear any differences in the options you try to preview.

Other bugs, sometimes the app takes a little bit to bring up the headphone options once it is connected. If that happens i close the app completely and reopen it and it works fine from there.

Cant think of any other bugs so far. The app needs some refinement in its UX design. Moving bass boost to be in the EQ preset list is one.

The other is that it does show the battery percentage but it only does it in 10% increments.. 90%, 80% etc, not 96%, 88% etc

Other quirks are the headsets voice (I actually laugh when i hear it) and even though i turn the headset off before putting it in the case, whenever i take it out of the case, it automatically turns on and connects to the last connected device it can find. That might be a setting that can be turned off though.

          Alright thanks a lot.

"The other is that it does show the battery percentage but it only does it in 10% increments.. 90%, 80% etc, not 96%, 88% etc"

I think that is pretty normal, I have plenty of devices that are like this or only 5% increments like 95%, 90%
          , 85% etc.

Automatically turning on when you grab it might be a NFC feature. I don't have much experience with NFC but I watched a recent youtube review mentioned they used the NFC function to turn the headphones on all the time, so they didnt have to use the on/off switch. They were specifically saying the "new version" of the headphones not having NFC was a negative point for them due to this reason.

          • @harshbdmmaster718: Yeah the battery percentage isnt big problem, i think it is pretty normal now as well.

That's interesting about it might being a NFC feature, not having to press the button to turn it on is nice. I found by the time i take it out and put it on my head, it's all ready to go.

I've found it holds battery well in general and when i had it turned off for a few days, it was on the same 10% increment when i turned it back on.

  • Thanks mods. Resolved.

  • Mind boggling that this doesn't have more upvotes. Big discount on a just released headset, one that could dethrone WH-1000MX5s.

People were happy to pay $299 for three year old momentum 3s.. crazy

    • $300 and $475 big difference. That ain’t crazy at all

      • Sorry, I had a brain fart and somehow calculated the difference as only $75 dollars! Yes, $300 to $475 is more than 50% increase

    • I tried to warn people about the App's bugs and issues maybe that had something to do with it.

Also overall price is quite high, I think ozbargainers do not consider that tasteful.

And if going by past premium ANC headphones going up against XM3/4, it seems like none have been able to dethrone the Sony's. I think they have some special sauce going on that they keep hidden in their filing cabinet.
The only one which came close was the Airpods Max ANC apparently, but they are only superior to the XM4's with cancelling low frequency noise the Airpods Max completely eliminate it with the downside of very high ANC cabin pressure effect.

XM5 is also reported to have shallower smaller earpads and higher ANC cabin pressure than the XM3/4. Having your ear closer to the headphones driver could have something to do with the effect of increased ANC cabin pressure.

Anyone knows why they replaced genuine leather with artificial and metal with plastic but become more expensive

    • RRP is $50 cheaper than the previous model.

Give it a few months or so and sales will get closer to the 3's pricing too.

  • Do these allow ANC when using them for phone calls? I tried another ANC headphones and it only worked for music but not for Zoom or regular phone calls which defeated the purpose of me wanting them to make calls in a noisy environment.

  • i really want these but just got the wh-1000xm4 for $230 off another deal. very tempting but will have to wait to see if app issues are fixed.

    • +2

You got XM4's for half the price of this deal and which are known to be one of the best. Do you really need to spend double that to get something which basically does the same thing?
If anything wait until the Momentum 4's drop in price to around $299 like the Momentum 3's. Maybe by that time you will have used the XM4's enough that you will appreciate the Momentum 4's. I just don't get buying 2 similar products so close to each other when you can only use one at a time.
