  • Did anyone get one of these and turn em into an internal one?

    • Yup… after making sure it is a 7200rpm one first.

    • Yep, 8 of them.

      that was only usb2

    • altomic is right, the other deal is for the model with USB2.0 only.

i cracked both of this open and use it inside my stora, been running for a week now, no problem so far.

    • what seagate model inside ? ST2000DM001?

      • Generally yes, though some models contain the green model.

      • Read my comment below. Basically, if it was manufactured in April 2012, then it is a big NO (those are 5900rpm ones).

        • Are you serious? I thought they got rid of all of those? Everything post 12/2011 and after were confirmed 7200 rpm. They went back to 5900 in April?

        • Yes. I bought one of those April 2012 ones. 5900rpm. It is the fastest "green" drive I ever tested. If you want to use it just for USB 3, it is quite fast and quiet. If you want to take the drive out and use SATA3, the 7200rpm one is better (in terms of performance).

      • ST2000DM001 it is, mine is 12/2011 from office works.

    • does it use SATA II or SATA III?

    nevermind

If the drive / device is made on April 2012, then it is NOT the 7200rpm drive, but the 5900rpm one.

Pretty much the ones you can find in OfficeWorks now are the 5900rpm one (people already bought the 7200rpm ones). That said, the 5900rpm one's speed is impressive. It probably explains why Officeworks can still sell them at $98 each (Seagate sell the newer batch for less). It does appear the newer batches now use 'green' hard disks.

Both drives perform better using SATA3 than on USB 3.0 (but USB 3.0 performance is quite good). Using NEC USB 3.0 chipset, if you just test the beginning portion of both drives, you cannot tell which one is which. Must use a program which tests start to finish and produces a chart. Or, if you couldn't be bothered, just use a program that tells you the hard drive rpm.

If you want to buy these because you want the 7200rpm drive inside, you need to be selective and know which batches to get. JB's in my area are out of stock already.

    • weren't seagate phasing out the Green disks, due to the energy saving being pittance

got mine for OfficeWork ($98), dunno if it is 7200RPM, it's USB3.0 and manufacture date is april-2012, damn ultra quite, very happy!
PS: I've been buying all my tech gizmos at OW, much more friendlier staff, and they always tell me at checkout "anything wrong with it during the warranty period, bring it back for replacement", that is re assurring. Unlike at Hardly Normals, the old lady sitting on her fat butt is like a robot processing the order through a 5 step procedure to ring up the sale!! not a Word is said, just a grunt! arrrrggggghhhhhhhh!!!

    • OfficeWorks's service is top notch.

Unfortunately, there is a good chance your drive is not a 7200rpm. I bought one (also an April 2012 one). Tested it (you can tell if you have a 7200rpm one to compare). I ran disk info software and it indicated 5900rpm. Like I mentioned before, the 5900rpm drive is fast and for USB 3, it is fine. The drive is definetely quieter than the 7200rpm one.

I am not the only one who reported Apri 2012 ones being 5900rpm.

      • Bought two from Officeworks on Sunday, can confirm both are 7200rpm.

There's a Harvey Norman on Norfolk Island??!

    • I feel sorry for them.

  • How come the Harvey norman website says $138??

    • was in-store listed at $99.

might have gone back to original price?

if anyone else reports $138 (as seen in-store) then I'll mark this deal expired.

      cool
