That way they don't have to beat it by 5%

    • +4

I think OW monitor OB for tech deals, and slightly undercut, so they don't have to discount the 5%…

      • +1

They monitor their main competitors (like JB) and they keep an eye on things that are being frequently price matched. They update their prices every day… I think it's at around 2pm EST.

      • +2

They were already doing that on a daily basis, with or without OZB. They monitor large competitors like DSE, JB, and HN.

The small computer shops they don't monitor because there's too many of them, it's impractical.

      • My local OW has all competitor uncatalogued printed out and pinned to the windows of the front entrance to show they're cheaper than anyone else. If they can beat a competitor to it before I can get them to price match, I say good on them.

    • +2

      Damn right.
I got to OW with a print-out of the JB deal ~ 12.30pm, and only paid ~ $95.

I much prefer OW - returning stuff is easy peasy.
      They are also hardcore price-matchers.

  • +3

JB deal has free delivery for all those interested, and OW beats it by 1 dollar so basically 1% better hmm why bother.

Ronknee this is not a deal as it is hardly better than what is already their, in addition in the post for JB it has been noted that it can be had at OW.

    • +6

agreed, I'd rather spend my $$$ with the original discounter (unless there is a major price difference)

      • +1

$1 savings is $1 savings. It then boils down to convenience.

        • yes thats true but a 1% saving is so little, its doable anywhere.

        • +5

buy u two soft serve… two baby …TWO!

        • +1

          three!!! baby!!! THREE!!!

        • hmm soft serve.

        • +2

Or some SATA cables at Meritline, provided you don't need them in the next month or two.

        • 30 cents again whoohoo

        • most places have the soft cones $0.50c each

        • +1

As others have noted, McD's are 30c again, I know this coz I just had one! :)

    • +42

How is this not a deal? The price of the hard drive has been $129 the past month since it replaced the USB 2.0. That's 24% off. If you want to compare it to JB Hi-Fi, then yes, it's hardly better but hardly better is still better right? In addition, it also makes it convenient for those who live close to their local Officeworks so that they don't go out of their way to find a JB Hi-Fi.

Edit: Not to mention Officeworks also provides free delivery for purchases over $55.

        • +4

Like I said, it's only hardly better if you compare it relatively. The price of the unit sells for much higher normally so if a 24% reduction is not good enough, then I'm not sure what is.

"maybe next time you could give us a deal you thought of yourself."
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that.

        • +8

You make it seem like I have control over the prices.

        • Agreed with Mikinoz. Would be nice to see a good bargain that isn't a reactionary bargain like this one was in reaction to the awesome JB price.
A hardly better bargin is a better bargin than none yes, and this is a great price, but would be good to see one that isn't done only hours after the JB one or just a "we'll match and beat by 5%".

Just a general comment and not directed at you, OW employee. Thanks for posting the bargain. As I said in the JB bargain I wish I didn't buy the 3tb version last week for $170 :(

        • 1 - Kudos to you to price matching.
2 - Price matching isn't a bargain is one of the rules of OzBargain.

Look, you did the right thing. You did NOTHING wrong. But it's JB that provided the good special, you matched it.

        • +1

Actually they didn't match it. They beat it…. by $1.

        • I wasn't talking about you. Don't take it so personally. I'm talking about OW. While I appreciate the price, the original deal retailer took initiative. OW would not have this price if not for them, hence no initiative.

      • ronnknee are you really a rep or do you just work for OW?

        • +13

I am an employee so as part of OzBargain's policy, I declared myself as affiliated with the store. However I speak as an OzBargainer than an actual representative.

        • +25

          OzB is a tough crowd…
OW have provided countless bargains and price-matches in the past, where's the love?! lol

Convenient locations, late opening hours, good price….thanks for the bargain ronnknee, looks good to me

        • +8

That's very true. Ow really is a hardcore pricematcher. Others' are just bullshit.

        • +2

yes, agree with stonedewok and ahan. Nothing better than shop at OW. Also, returning an items as easy as buying.

        • Sending you love from a long term Officeworks shopper. Now if you could only make your catalogues sexier….

        • Additionally, OW have plenty of parking and generally a lot more stock than other competitors.

  • +7

Good for people who live closer to officeworks I guess

    • +2

It's also better for people who have a Coles team member discount card, or access to someone's card. You get a further 5% off on top of it.

      • -5

Speaking of which, my card expires today.. Haven't gone back to work for three months..
It's too hard to have a full time job, study chartered accounting program and work another day at the servo.

        • I only picked up my new card today myself. And I haven't been there for months either (I'm on annual leave for 4 months). ;)

        • Wow, are you still considering going back to work?

        • I don't want to (I hate the store I work in.. used to be better until new managers came in a F'd everything up).. but unless a better job falls into my lap, I don't have much of a choice. I got a mortgage to pay off.

  • +14

    It's the cheapest, so it's a deal.

  • +1

A deal is a deal, just bought one from Coburg OW on my way home, BTW, you can get it deliveried to your home at same price $98 (at least in Melbourne Metro area)

  • rep, is drive inside is ST3000DM001 still?

  • +1

About a week before the Thailand floods I got this [USB2 version] drive for $84 from OW under a price match with Big W who had it in a catalogue for $88.

Then the floods happened and the price went through the roof.

HN also priced matched Big W $88 [actually offered it for $87] that week.

Hope they keep going down ….buy heaps.

    • I can't remember where I read it (probably techradar) but prices shouldn't go down until next year or November this year at the best. Something to do with supplier contracts already being signed so that they had to be sold at a certain price, and those contracts only run out at the end of the year.

  • -5

Great deal, but gotta get in quick though.. cause OW has limited stock.

    • +2

      "Great deal"

      so why the neg?

  • +1

More options, wish I was in the market for some drives.

  • The free delivery is nice, thankyou

  • See the $99 "Deal" at JB Hi-Fi… for additional comments about [possible] issues with this drive
    (eg, Click-Failure)

    • -2

The click failure probably referred to the USB 2.0 version. Generally, it is a power related issue on the SATA2 to USB part. Hopefully, the USB 3.0 version will be better.

The drive inside is 5400rpm. However, at this price, you cannot really expect a 7200rpm drive.

      • The 99 deal at DSE earlier this year were 7200 drives, went nicely into my NAS. Hope these are 7200 as well?

      • Seagate no longer produces 5400rpm drives, so these USB 3.0 units would have to be old stocks if they are 5400.

        • They do make 5900rpm green drives though.

        • +1

They used to, but now they don't.

      • Sorry… my mistake. Drive is ST2000DM001… looks like it is a 7200rpm drive.
Then, looks like it is a pretty good deal.

        • +1

No no no. Sorry. I just bought this from OW in Highett VIC and the drive inside is a: ST2000DL003 - ie a green drive running at 5900rpm.

I'm very disappointed as I thought that it would be a 7200rpm drive.

          Let others beware.

  • used freinds 5% discount card cost total of $93.10

  • bought two with 5% off. bargain for my 4 bay enclosure.

  • +9

I was gonna say I can't believe some of the comments, but unfortunately frankly I can. I think the salient point being missed here isn't the $1 difference, it's that somebody used their own effort, time & initiative to post a deal that WILL benefit others…gratis!!!

When JB runs out of stock, (let's face it, at this price it's highly likely) all those puffing their chests about whether this is a bargain or not will at least have another option to buy one!

There's a lesson in this for would-be deal posters, however…don't bother doing the right thing & declaring that you simply work for an organisation. Apparently, once you do then you become responsible for the pricing policies of the entire chain!!! :o

    • +6

Agreed, that or OzBargain should give the choice to differentiate between "affiliate" or "representative" as the two roles are very different.

    • -4

While some of the comments are unnecessarily harsh, the bargain is quite hum drum. Why? Because they would have done it no matter what. If they hadn't, people would have used the price match option en masse and gotten it for $94.05.

Like I said above - nothing wrong with the deal. Good price. Thanks for notifying us. But advertising that you've avoided having to honour the 5% pricematch policy isn't exactly amazing.

      • +3

Officeworks guarantee is primarily about having the lowest price, not the beating by 5%. That only happens when they don't keep up. Either way, 5% or not, they still have the lowest price, even if it's only by $1. That is in accordance to their LPG policy.

OW prides itself on having the lowest price, not on beating the lowest price by 5%, which should only ever happen occasionally. I think your expectations are unreasonable if you think they did wrong by it just to avoid giving a further 5% off.

        • What expectations are you talking about? I expect nothing for them, I simply don't get excited by them adjusting a price to avoid be punished by their own policy.

Once again - good for them. I've said that three times now. Is it sinking in?

        • Well, we don't expect you to get excited. As long as you expect nothing from them, we don't expect you to expect anything from them either.

Though there has to be at least some expectation from you to avoid a comment that the deal is 'hum drum'.

        • And I'm fine with you disagreeing with me that it's hum drum.

What's annoying is that you disagreed with me… for imaginary reasons.

        • Reply to lostn: Very valid point. They find a cheaper price and their price to confirm to the Cheapest price promise. Other retailers have it too but don't usually follow. My recent experience at jbhifi and DSE when I tried to get a Galaxy SII.
I find OW best in attitude with customer seeking a price match.

        • I think it works well for them. The idea is to tell people their prices are constantly updated to at least match the lowest price, so the consumer goes.. yeah, they're going to be at least as low as the lowest guy if not lower, so I'll just shop there for everything instead of bothering to research other people's prices and checking out the competition. Would save me time if I just go straight to OW.

I really don't care if they undercut by $1 to avoid undercutting by $5. They still won't be beaten and if they are, they will match it. You can't complain when they're already the lowest price.

  • Thank you sir!

  • +7

100s of comments for $1. Only at OzBargain.

    • +1

Yeah, lucky it wasn't between iPad deals. That brings out the …

    • +2

$1 means alot, it can get you half of the hungry jacks burger deal!

  • +1

Stupid thing to ask. Does quality change even though brand is same?

  • +1

ronnknee can you hook me up with your staff discount? I'll pay cash

  • -8

so now after officeworks or anyone else essentially price-matches or price-beats by a trivial amount another ozbargain-listed deal, especially between nationwide retailers, the copycat bargain is going to be accepted as an original rather than a duplicate?

    • +10

Bolding your comment really gets the message aross a lot better than had you just typed like a normal person.

      • Lol :o)

      • -1

+1 why be normal when you can be bold? be loud, be proud, be strong and stand out for yourself :)

  • 1 year warranty?
I think HP had 3yrs warranty.

    • This has a 3 year limited warranty.

      • 3yrs warranty. Deal!

  • Can anyone tell me.. will this work for me? I want to connect it to my wirelss modem which has usb so I can use it as a network storage for connecting from my Mac, PC, and PS3 to play movies, save files etc.

I went to OW. They wouldn't believe me that it was selling for 98. Finally they scanned the product and were a little emabarrased. But once I asked the above question they could not tell me. So I left it and here i am?

    • Depends on your modem but it should be fine.

  • My modem is NetgearN600 wireless dual band gigabit ADSL2+ mode router?

    • N600 is a sort of advertising term for 3T3R and not the model number.

  • DGND3700 is model number i think. I paid 155 from OW. Good price i believe… I can save files from Mac to this Seagate HD and than open them on my PC laptop?

    • That'll be fine.

  • Can anyone report the firmware on the drives in these? If they are ST2000DM001 with firmware cc96 then they will have the SATA2 3Gb limitation and the frequent head-parking issue

    • A bloke who got one from JB hifi got an ST2000DM001 made in china with cc96 firmware
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/71368?page=1#comment-892507

edit: HD Tune is reporting the firmware on my drive as CC9D, not sure if accurate

    • My model is STAY2000302 from Officeworks.

      • That's the model as sold as an external hard drive with enclosure. The actual model of the hard drive inside is different

    • If I understand correctly the SATA2 3GB limitation is not really a limitation as the HDD cannot max out the interface anyway?

I thought it was only SSD's that benefited from SATA3 6GB.

But good point re the clicking / screeching noise.

    • Checked two so far - both have been ST2000DM001 but both were firmware CC9D.

Interesting to note that this firmware version can not be upgraded at this stage even though newer firmware is available….???

      http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Barracuda-XT-Barracuda-Barracud…

      • You are lucky. I just got mine from OW in Highett and it has a ST2000DL003 drive in it - a 5900rpm drive NOT a 7200rpm drive

  • here's some photos of the box and contents http://imgur.com/a/9c5K3

I got mine from Officeworks QV, Melbourne. There were about 80 on the shelves at 19:30 31-05-2012 for $98.

I haven't opened the enclosure, but it's 2 piece plastic with no visible screws or clips. My box says Made/Assembled in Thailand

A guy from the $99 JB-Hifi post opened his and got a Barracuda ST2000DM001 made in China, which according to google is 7200rpm. He says it can also be used as an internal drive
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/892371?redirect=1

edit: I just used HD Tune to run some tests and check some info, it's reporting the drive with the following, not sure if accurate:
    Firmware version : CC9D
    Standard : ATA8-ACS - SATA III
    Rotation speed : 7200 RPM

  • +1

USB 3.0 test result (NEC chipset) - I don't have the new H77/Z77 intel USB 3:

    Sequential Read: 133.5MB/s
    Sequential Write: 127.7MB/s

    • Seriously? I get 60-70MB/s write speed (Etron chipset).

      • Benchmark software figures - treat them as the best possible / max speed figures. From physical memory to the drive.

I need to use a PC with SSD in order to really test the actual write speed properly (because my other hard drive is slower - it cannot pump out enough data for this drive).

      • Etron USB3 chipset is pretty crappy performance wise, unfortunately. I have it too :(

        • Yep, that's what you get for paying a premium for the earlier USB3 chipsets (or at least in my case). What mobo do you have?
